We had our large vault ceiling living room painted by Rome Leite' company. Rome and his crew did a very good job. I was please to see he had staff that would get the job done in a day and they did a very neat job with a 2 color paint, In addition, they kept all floors covered and furniture covered and did not make a mess. His price was also the best one quoted. I would recommend Rome's company to anyone interested in painting interior and exterior jobs.

Eder and Jason got me out of a very difficult situation. We bought a new house and hired someone to refinish the floors. When we moved in, we immediately saw that he didn't finish the job properly -- the floor was grainy and without a satin sheen. After waiting for weeks for him to come finish the job, we gave up and hired Positive Wood Floors. In only three days, they moved our furniture and boxes out of the way, finished the job, let the poly dry, and moved the boxes and furniture back. They came when they said they would, did what they promised, and finished exactly on time. They used the product I requested to match what the first guy did even though it's probably not their usual stuff. And the floors now look the way they are supposed to: beautiful, smooth and durably finished. I really appreciate their professionalism after what I went through with the first company. Night and day difference. Thanks, guys!

I can't say enough about how happy I am with MF Hardwood Floor's work. They were the first company to respond to my project request and came out immediately to to assess my floor and set a date to do the job. Fernando is was incredibly professional, prompt, and knowledgeable, and completed the floor much quicker than I even thought it could be finished at the finest quality. I will highly recommended them to everyone I know and will use them for all of my future projects.

David from Homestead came to tear out some carpet in a bedroom in our home. He and his assistant did a great job. They worked diligently moving heavy furniture, and removing many, many staples to reveal a beautiful hardwood floor. I was completely satisfied with their work and would recommend them.

He did a beautiful job refinishing my stairs and bedroom floor. The floor was in pretty bad shape, having been covered with installed carpeting for decades. The end result was far better than I imagined. He works clean, does exactly what he says, sticks to schedule and does terrific work. I wish I thought to take before and after photos! Steve also installed a carpet runner on my stairs that looks really nice. A bit of a challenge with the pies being different sizes, but he made it work. I definitely recommend him.

We are beyond thrilled with the work Marciano and his team did for our home. We purchased our first home in May and instantly knew the floors were going to be our biggest project before we could move in. We received many referrals from friends and I have to say we are thankful we chose Marciano. Our job required ripping up carpet and installing new white oak, ripping up old red oak in the kitchen to match and refinishing all of the upstairs and the stairs to match and we were on a very tight budget. Marciano came over a few nights before we started the project to sand and show us some samples ... my husband and I were so indecisive and he was so patient and offered us alternatives depending on price and made us feel very comfortable and never pushy. we ultimately decided to go with a natural light Scandinavian look. In terms of quality, he used all Bona products for our job. He and his team worked full days starting at 7-8am to around 6-7pm and completed the entire job so quickly. The floors came out even better than we could have anticipated and often get lots of compliments from friends and family coming to visit. I would certainly recommend him to ANYONE who is looking to have their floors refinished or installed. He has to be one of the hardest working and most honest people we have come by in the process of updating our new home, and as first time home buyers, we are very grateful for that.

I’m not one to leave reviews but this time I absolutely had to. I went on thumbtack Sunday afternoon and Costa responded immediately to my flooring request and we agreed upon the price. He came out the following day at 8:30am and was finished putting down luxury vinyl planks in my 325 sq ft living room by lunch time!!! Very professional as I would highly recommend him for any of your flooring needs.

Jeffrey was amazing and incredibly knowledgeable, when it comes with his expertise. I needed to cover a big cutout hole on a wall and have it painted as well. He came to assess the hole and began to be very through with an informative explanation. That really makes me feel comfortable, knowing that somebody like Jeffrey knows what he’s doing. He offered to paint a entire room with my color choice of paint after patching it up the hole for a reasonable price. Overall, I couldn’t be any happier with his service and the results.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
