Jeremy is an incredible tutor. Before meeting with him I had enrolled in another tutoring service and was completely lost. I dreaded taking the ACT because of how unprepared I felt with the previous tutoring program. Jeremy stepped in and cleared everything up within a few sessions. We tackled every section together and learned what it takes to get a good score. I no longer am nervous about the ACT, but rather excited because I am certain he has given me the tools to achieve a score of 33 or above and be accepted into the most elite schools. I definitely recommend him to anybody that is looking for a tutor not just for the standardized tests!

Hired John for assistance with teaching our Au Pair and found his professionalism and attention to detail excellent. We asked for feedback and he provided a very detail account of the lesson and helpful assessment. Our Au Pair also found him patient and much easier to work with, having taken lessons with a driving school in town and lost confidence. She is continuing with John, as he is helping her improve and regain her confidence.

Eve was an outstanding tutor for the ISEE. We hired her with just 6 weeks to go until the test - we had been using a New Haven-based tutoring company that just was not doing the job - in that very short period of time Eve managed to coach our daughter from the middle of the pack (ISEE steniles 4 and 5) toward the top (stiles 6 and 7). Plus she was very flexible about scheduling and was amenable to meeting our daughter in New Haven. We only wish we'd enlisted her sooner! We will definitely seek her assistance for our next set of test preps!

Tristan tutored my son for his SAT's and did a fabulous job. My son was not confident when he first took them and he had not studied. I felt that for him to have a chance at a higher score he needed one on one tutoring. Even though Tristan resided in Connecticut and my son in Long Island, Tristan took the challenge and tutored my son via Skype. Xavier recently took the SAT's again in January and his score were raised over 100 points. Tristan only tutored my son for six weeks. I wonder how many more points my son would of raised his score if he had been tutored by Tristan longer. I attribute my son 's success to Tristan and his patience and diligence with my son. He was always on time and professional. He provided written reports after each session and kept me abreast of what he would target with Xavier to improve his scores. I am very happy that I chose Tristan to tutor my son. His prices were very reasonable and he was knowledgeable and kind towards my son. I recommend him and his organization to anyone he wants to help their child succeed. So far my son has been admitted to two private colleges and he has received grants. Thank you Tristan! My name is Ms. Lola Nathan, a recently retired Public School Administrator. It gives me great pleasure to write this review for Gwen Robinson. I've known Gwen for over 30 years and our best times have been spent singing and cooking. She specializes in vegetarian, vegan, cooked, and raw foods. We have spent many hours preparing dishes like vegan potato salad, whole wheat dinner rolls, vegetarian meat loaf, roasted veggies, vegan eggplant parmigiana, raw seasoned kale, baked sweet potatoes, vegan burgers, all types of potatoes, every kind of vegetable, fruit, cake, apple crisp and so much more. Our latest collaboration was vegan lentil loaf in which we added organic shredded carrots, organic chopped celery, organic chopped onions, ground flax seed, nutritional yeast, liquid smoke and some seasonings to our organic lentils. It was so delicious that the guests I invited for dinner wanted to take slices of the lentil loaf home for the next day. Juicing is an integral part of our health practices. One of our most healthful combinations is kale, spinach, celery, carrots, and a touch of ginger, all organic! We know it's best to juice our vegetables and eat our fruit. Juiced veggies go straight to our cells giving strength and vitality to our whole body. Fruit we eat raw because this way cleanse our digestive system. Gwen prepares excellent fruit platters! Gwen is busy but she makes time for people like me who care about their health and want great tasting food. It doesn't take us long to do anything. I get all the ingredients, she does the preparing with me. Sometimes I just have her prepare meals for me for special occasions! She gets rave reviews, is easy to work with and is patient with all whom she is instructing. Gwen has taught many of my associates and friends how to make different tasty entrées and treats. She has no problem sharing recipes and keeps some with her. Young and old alike love whatever she prepares. She makes her own dough, from scratch, for fried dough & pizzas! Wonderful!! She is one of the best vegetarian Chef's I know. Always rave reviews! Always!! We know her as Ms. G, the personal vegan chef. Truly, Ms. Lola Nathan

Michael is a nice tutor, he helped me a lot. As an international student, literature is so hard for me. He is so patient to correct my pronunciation. And also, he always use some easy word to express a complex sentence meaning to me. I improved a lot because of his help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.
