Bob repaired the flashing on my chimney, repaired some roof ridge tiles, and installed new rain gutter supports where the nails had filed from ice build up in the winter. He was here on time, very professional. He did the tasks we agreed to and a few others I added for a fair price. I would recommend him to anyone.

Rob and his crew did tile work, paint job and minor improvements to dining and living rooms. Rob and his crew are very professional, customer oriented, helpful and accommodating. They did a great job installing the kitchen tile. The paint job was done very well and they cleaned up everything each day. Rob suggested crown molding around the dining room and we are glad he did because it looks beautiful. Friends love the way it looks. The minor improvements we also asked for was done in a meticulous and professional manner. We would hire them again for other home improvements. Thanks guys for a pleasurable experience.

As a military family managing a rental property in New York while stationed in another state, it can be extremely stressful and inconvenient when things go wrong. Last winter (2015), we found that out first hand, when we had a pipe freeze while our tenants were on vacation. The resulting flooding and water damage required us to completely remodel our kitchen, upstairs bathroom, family room and basement. We turned to KW Building and Remodeling for the job and could not be more pleased with the result. Not only did they work with our insurance company for us, they managed the entire project from start to finish while we remained out of state. They stayed in constant communication with us and made us feel at ease as they restored the home we hope to one day retire to. Knowing what was happening every step of the way (including photo updates) was invaluable to us and we can't thank KW enough for their willingness to stay in touch at all times. The experience was positive for reasons far beyond the communication aspect, however. The work done by KW Building and Remodeling was top-notch and the sub-contractors they brought in for tile work were equally great. We have since recommended their company to several family members and friends and will continue to do so. For a stress-free, high-quality experience, you can't go wrong with KW Building and Remodeling. Thank you Karl for all you did for us!

They are a very skilled group of guys, and Chris, the owner, is always hands on, which is one of the main ingredients to there success.. From the demolition to the Tile and finish, everything was excellent. Chris was always communicating to me, what was the goal for the day, and where they were at, in the project. After receiving three appraisals for a roof replacement Squire Roofing, Andrew (Drew) Oehler, owner, got back to me within a few days. His appraisal was in the ballpark and I had (word of mouth) heard that his company was very reputable. I rent this house and worked with Tracy Tomaselli, owner, to select a roofer. We agreed on Drew. Once the deposit was made Drew came by to say that a dumpster would be delivered that morning. And that materials would also be delivered by noon that same day. Both were delivered that same morning. Drew also explained that his crew would be starting at 8:00 am Saturday and work two days to complete the job. He questioned if 8:00 am was too early. (it wasn't) At exactly 8:00 am the crew showed up. I went out to introduce myself to the foreman which I found was very polite, knowledgeable, and personable. I spoke to him during the day to ask if there were any problems (ex: plywood warped, any rotting etc), there was nothing but the replacement of the entire roof, no issues or concerns. The first day they finished one side and said they'd be back the next. Unfortunately, it rained on Sunday, but Monday at 8:00 am the crew was back and proceeded to complete the job, (the entire roof, the flashing to the chimney and a small roof over the kitchen addition.) During these two days Drew visited and spoke to the foreman and also stopped in the ask me if everything was okay? I had absolutely no concerns. At the finish of the job the crew cleaned up the entire yard like it had never happened!! Immaculate! I couldn't find a nail or any part of any of the tiles. Drew was very on top of his crew and my concerns (which there weren't any). I would give this contractor a 10 or A+ and highly recommend him to anyone. Sincerely, Linda L. I hired Anthony to do a full gut job and renovation. 2 bathrooms, create 1 new bathroom out of a closet, new kitchen, tile, and exterior roofing and siding work. Everything came out great and no matter what pre-existing problems came up, he and his crew were prepared to handle them. Very happy with the job!

I found KJC Construction via Craigslist. That’s not usually a good way to find the best worker, but I got lucky when Chester Chang responded. I knew I'd found a good man when he was in absolutely no rush to enthusiastically go over all the details and to offer valuable advice.____ KJC is usually a one-man show, though he does have helpers when necessary. But one man was all I needed for my kitchen makeover - Chester. The quality of his work and his attention to detail are top notch! It's obvious that he truly enjoys his profession.____ Chester resurfaced my 31 year old laminate counters, which were still very solid, with all-new Formica and new bullnose edges (see photos). A few others who responded to my ad were obviously nervous to attempt that, but Chester was very confident and anxious to tackle it. He did an excellent job! That saved me a fortune compared with removing and replacing them with all new counter tops, which other respondents had tried hard to sell me.____ He also installed vinyl plank flooring over the old tile floor, installed all new baseboards and new ceramic counter backsplashes. In every case his past experience and attention to detail resulted in a beautiful job.____ Chester made good use of plastic sheeting to protect the cabinets and seal the doorways. Virtually no dust made it out of the kitchen! He graciously helped me to remove the stove and frig. from the room, and to later move them back in place.____ I really can't say enough good things about KJC Construction, because KJC is Chester. His work ethic, his pricing, his attitude and his wealth of experience all came together to make our 31 year old kitchen look virtually brand-new again!____ You'll see in my photos that I still have to finish painting the walls, which I chose to do myself. I do enjoy painting. But Chester is more than qualified to do that and much more, such as construction, roofing, plumbing, doors, windows, etc. I have already promised him that he will be my go-to guy for our upcoming bathroom makeover. I have no need or desire to get competing quotes, and that’s a great feeling!____ I highly recommend KJC if you want a real pro who really cares. Check out my before and after photos!

We hired Top Hammer for the following two major projects: 1. Kitchen renovation last winter (2015/2016) with updated floor plan, custom cabinets, new wood floors, expanded island, granite counter tops, stone back splash, installation of new appliances, spray foam insulation, plumbing, electrical work and lighting. As part of this project we also relocated our washer and drier from the mud room adjacent to the kitchen to an upstairs utility closet. The mud room was tiled and a small sink added. 2. Renovation of our unfinished basement this past summer (2016) which gave us a wide open floor plan that included an area for a home gym as well as space for a home entertainment center, air hockey and ping pong table. In addition, a storage room was built around the air handler equipment so that it is now out of the way. The most ambitious aspect of this project was a small two-level addition to house with new roof, windows, door, siding, and spray foam insulation. The addition included a full bathroom on the upper level, additional storage for our oil tanks on the lower level and a new entry from the backyard with stairs down to basement. This project also entailed an HVAC upgrade throughout the basement, insulation, electrical, lighting and plumbing. We couldn't be happier with the results. The work flow in the kitchen is so much better than before and the cabinetry is amazing. And no more squeaky floors! The reaction from our guests has consistently been "WOW!" In addition, the mud room is now a perfect entry way into the house and having the washer and dryer upstairs is a definite plus. One thing that made Mike stand out compared to other contractors we have worked with in the past is his thoughtfulness. Having a kitchen reno can be one of the most disruptive and stressful projects undertaken. However, Mike minimized the impact by creating a temporary kitchen for us to use during construction. We can't thank him enough for this. The basement also turned out great. We have much needed storage and so much more space to have fun. Can't wait to start entertaining family and friends! The bathroom design is terrific and the tile work is outstanding. And having the new entry way from the back yard with easy access to the bathroom will be so convenient for our pool guests. One of the most satisfying results of the project is how seamless the new addition looks. Our friends have commented that the addition looks like it was always part of the house. Can't ask for a better compliment than that. Aside from the outstanding results, Mike is a pleasure to work with. He is very knowledgeable and hires hard-working qualified sub-contractors. He's also not afraid to step in and roll up his sleeves if necessary to help get the job done. Most importantly, he is always reachable and responds immediately if an issue arises.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
