Harry did a terrific job in every respect — from installing blinds, a smoke detector, and a full length mirror, to hanging cabinets and various pieces of art (including one more than 7 feet wide, which he mounted on a plaster wall perfectly level), fixing an outdoor gate, and staining outdoor steps. All the work was done with meticulous care and concern to be meeting our needs. We will definitely have him back for other projects. It's a privilege to recommend him to others!

Jack is an absolute must hire. He was open to doing a wide variety of jobs and did all of them well. He spent the day fixing a split oak stair tread, patching drywall, changing out shower heads and faucet knobs, moved some cabinets up so my new washer would fit underneath, fixed screws backing out of cabinet doors, mounted a mirror and towel rack...pretty much all those lingering odds and ends. Jack was on time, very personable, cleans up after himself, and absolutely someone I trust. Been looking for someone like Jack for years. Give him a try, you'll be glad you did!

We just hired Custom Woodwork ETC to create additional kitchen cabinets for our existing 1950s kitchen. He is going to match the cabinet style and allow my grandmother's kitchen to grow in size but keep the original feel. We are so excited we found Bruce Ring on Thumbtack to do the work!

Excellent contractor. What I especially liked was how carefully he listened to what I wanted, and also explained every detail. My cabinets and kitchen look so much better than I imagined. Thanks Jeff! I have recommended him highly to friends and family.

Installed our kitchen cabinets, helped with all assembly and install of our kitchen. Chirs is a problem solver, doesn't need to be managed, sees what needs to be done and does it. He's ALWAYS on time, usually early, is a hard worker and works a full day. Couldn't have asked for a better handyman. So lucky we found him on this site.

I had a project that was left hanging. I had some cabinets put up in my office but the previous contractor never finished the trim and crown molding. John came in and finished everything up. He was very quick, professional, and best of all neat! Very happy to finally have my office all finished. Thanks John!

I had a bathroom from the 1970's complete with a blue tab and tile. All the tiles along the tub were falling out and leaking. I called Bathfitters, and they wanted an exorbinate amount to fix it. Tony came out and gave me some fantastic ideas. First of all, he suggested we retain the blue tub, which I wanted to do, and which makes the bathroom unique. Then he suggested a bring in a neutral wall tile, BUT add aborder of blue tile that would match the bathtub and bring the room together. He also quoted me for a new floor, painting the wall, installing a new toilet, and moving and reinstalling a heavy cabinet. He work was impeccable. He was always on time. He price was unbelievably less than Bathfitters to do all the work. He also did extra work, like personally refinishing some work along the border of the shower. He went out of his way to do an amazing job. I would highly recommend him for his attention to detail, creativity, and willingness to work with the client.

Newton Carpenters re-finished all of the cabinets and drawers in our kitchen recently. Greg is very friendly, does very thorough work, and his fees are reasonable and fair. He also is very careful and considerate in our home and totally cleans up, so you wouldn't even know he was there! The central contact person is Danielle who is First Class in her customer service, communication, and organizational skills. I would highly recommend Newton Carpenters!

Ed installed a desk in my home office. I wanted a simple look and he helped me think of best fit and install to keep it clean and open. Had to incorporate base board heat when putting in cabinet and it all came out great. Helped me keep costs down by recommending options. I recommend him and that you talk through your thoughts and ideas with him so he can offer his ideas and experience.

I found KJC Construction via Craigslist. That’s not usually a good way to find the best worker, but I got lucky when Chester Chang responded. I knew I'd found a good man when he was in absolutely no rush to enthusiastically go over all the details and to offer valuable advice.____ KJC is usually a one-man show, though he does have helpers when necessary. But one man was all I needed for my kitchen makeover - Chester. The quality of his work and his attention to detail are top notch! It's obvious that he truly enjoys his profession.____ Chester resurfaced my 31 year old laminate counters, which were still very solid, with all-new Formica and new bullnose edges (see photos). A few others who responded to my ad were obviously nervous to attempt that, but Chester was very confident and anxious to tackle it. He did an excellent job! That saved me a fortune compared with removing and replacing them with all new counter tops, which other respondents had tried hard to sell me.____ He also installed vinyl plank flooring over the old tile floor, installed all new baseboards and new ceramic counter backsplashes. In every case his past experience and attention to detail resulted in a beautiful job.____ Chester made good use of plastic sheeting to protect the cabinets and seal the doorways. Virtually no dust made it out of the kitchen! He graciously helped me to remove the stove and frig. from the room, and to later move them back in place.____ I really can't say enough good things about KJC Construction, because KJC is Chester. His work ethic, his pricing, his attitude and his wealth of experience all came together to make our 31 year old kitchen look virtually brand-new again!____ You'll see in my photos that I still have to finish painting the walls, which I chose to do myself. I do enjoy painting. But Chester is more than qualified to do that and much more, such as construction, roofing, plumbing, doors, windows, etc. I have already promised him that he will be my go-to guy for our upcoming bathroom makeover. I have no need or desire to get competing quotes, and that’s a great feeling!____ I highly recommend KJC if you want a real pro who really cares. Check out my before and after photos!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

    How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
