I enlisted the help of Arbor Tutors to help me with test prep for grad school. Oh man! I am SUPER happy I did that. The tutoring manager walked me through the whole process and set me up with TWO tutors. They also said I could change tutors at any time, but I didn't need to. I was accepted into all of my top choices (Columbia, Penn, Cornell and Duke). I used the application services also (they reviewed my essays).

Math Allergy + World’s Best Tutor - Time = 760 score + Top 5 MBA acceptance! Dan is the reason I’m heading to my dream school without a doubt. I can’t imagine scoring over 750 without his help. I wasted an entire year spinning my wheels with 3 different test prep companies and feeling like a lost cause before finding Dan- and not to mention consistently scoring under 600 despite embarrassing amounts of effort. Less than 6 months of working with Dan boosted my raw quant score by a full 10 points and it kept on climbing. Dan is patient, encouraging and a complete genius. Most importantly, Dan gave me both the confidence and battle tested approaches to hit a score that I would have laughed off a few months earlier. It still boggles my mind that a 200 point increase is even possible, but Dan made it happen. I don't normally write online reviews, but I can't stop sharing the secret weapon to making your dream school acceptances roll in aka working with Dan and never looking back. You’re welcome :)

Jeremy is an excellent teacher and can help you improve in any subject! He is fantastic with test prep such as the Algebra Regents where I scored over a 90 and with final exams. He also helped me with all of my study skills which has made a big difference with my time management. He simplifies everything, makes our lessons fun, and creates a plan for each week. I highly recommend using Jeremy to help you with all areas of your academic and test prep work!

I have only the highest praise for Jim DelGenio, in every possible way. We have had a longtime tutor working with my son, but test prep is not her specialty. We were referred to Jim through an acquaintance, and I’m so grateful that we had him in our corner. Simply put, Jim is a fabulous tutor. He very quickly assessed Conor’s working and learning style, and adapted his sessions accordingly. He spent quite some time chatting with us at the beginning of our time together, to understand our goals and work toward them. Our experience with Jim felt the total opposite of a “package”, but rather a customized strategy based on Conor’s strengths/weaknesses and our goals. Jim has a broad range of knowledge of not only the testing process, but also navigating the waters of college applications. He was a wealth of information that informed much of how we proceeded with the various schools Conor was considering. Jim gave “homework” that was apropos to the subject matter they were covering, but was mindful about weeks where Conor’s schoolwork was overwhelming – we all appreciated that! And personally, Jim was a pleasure to work with. Always on time. Always responsive to e-mails and phone calls. And an all around nice guy too! But the best “testimony” I could give is from Conor himself. I asked him if he attributed his great success in his SAT scores to his work with Jim. His reply? “Absolutely.”

I could not say enough good things about Dr. Fikar. He is the reason, for the first time in my entire life, I did well on a standardized test. I had used other large test prep companies to prep for the GMAT and none of them could help me beat a 650 until. Dr. Fikar's knowledge of the test and study materials are unparalleled. I could not highly recommend someone more. Thank you for everything Dr. Fikar!

I would definitely recommend Odyssey Test Prep for anyone preparing for the LSAT! I booked a handful of private tutoring sessions in the 6 weeks leading up to my exam to fine-tune my methods and it was a huge help. My tutor Sandy was extremely helpful and worked me through the barriers I was trying to break as I got closer to test day.

My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with the ACT tests coming up we wanted him to reach his full potential. By using the Chelsea International test prep tutoring service, my son has excelled so much. He is now prepped to go to Stanford, and this is after only doing 6 short weeks of tutoring with Dr. Michelle. Her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son to reach the greatest heights. He scored 35/36. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional service of Chelsea International Schooling at Home.

My son's overall score increased by 4 points from a 28 to a 32 after John worked with him. He felt confident and very well prepared going into his ACT. The study and test taking skills he learned were are directly applicable to the test, and his pre-test checklist was an excellent planning aid. I highly recommend John to any student who's committed to successfully improving ACT performance. Caroline P. Westport,CT

As a professional, Katya helped immensely with my memory skills, my reading speed (through speed reading techniques), and also even enhanced my ability to math on the fly (in my mind, without paper and pencil). Her online classes are a wonderful supplement to her face-to-face. I often refer students seeking SAT and ACT prep and she also over-delivers. 5 stars for sure!

Eve was an outstanding tutor for the ISEE. We hired her with just 6 weeks to go until the test - we had been using a New Haven-based tutoring company that just was not doing the job - in that very short period of time Eve managed to coach our daughter from the middle of the pack (ISEE steniles 4 and 5) toward the top (stiles 6 and 7). Plus she was very flexible about scheduling and was amenable to meeting our daughter in New Haven. We only wish we'd enlisted her sooner! We will definitely seek her assistance for our next set of test preps!

My son who is in college was struggling in linear algebra which is an advanced math class. The tutor from Ivy League Tutors was professional and demonstrated true dedication in helping my son to pass a stay in his college program. The owner consistently sent updates and summaries of the tutoring sessions. I highly recommend this company.

I hired Dr. V to help me prepare for the French OPI and WPT. It had been about four years since I had really spoken much French and he brought back all the things that I had been forgetting as well as awesome tips for ways I could get a higher level rating on the tests. He challenged me in a really good way and I was able to go into the test with a ton more confidence than if I had tried to do it alone. Merci beaucoup, Dr. V!!

Daniel is an incredible job preparing my daughter for the SAT. She managed an over 300 point jump in her practice tests. Most importantly, Daniel make my daughter more confident in her abilities and comfortable with the overall process. A good tutor inspires a student not only to work hard, but also to expect better things from themselves and Daniel certainly excelled at that.

We all know when it comes to the SAT’s there is guaranteed to be a lot of stress. As a sixteen year old high school student going through the SAT process, I can vouch for this. My anxiety began months ago. I admired people who had started their SAT prep a year before, while envying students who were just naturally good test takers, scoring 2000 and up; however, when you don’t fit into either of those categories you start wondering what now? At that point an SAT tutor seemed like a good idea. Enter Danny Ahn. The first time I met Danny, I was unsure what to expect. He understood my confusion and began to structure a plan of action. He soon established the level I was at in English and Math, and then focused in. After a few sessions I began to understand the kind of approach required of me. I have worked with Danny Ahn weekly since around late October or early November, 2013 and our work is ongoing. It is now Feb. 17, 2014. I have found Danny to be a good communicator and listener. He is dedicated, nurturing, focused, and hardworking, going beyond his allotted time with me to help me achieve my goals. He genuinely cares about my mental well being as well as my academic standing. He is readily available on the phone and via text, and has proven to be accommodating with regards to scheduling. I believe that Danny is pushing me in the right direction and I am feeling increasingly more confident with regards to the dreaded upcoming SAT’s. Danny has an excellent understanding of the SAT requirements and I feel that with his continued guidance I can achieve my goals.

I think any adult who pays to study a test just goes to show how important the test is to the person who may be feeling uncertain about him/herself or perhaps some aspects of the test. Hence, I believe the greatest value of a tutor is his ability to motivate his students to the next level of learning and to feel confident in tackling the test. And that is exactly what I found in Fred. I was feeling apprehensive after attempting some questions on the mock GRE test. But now, with the support of Fred, I feel very confident and that confidence motivated me to want to do my very best. So from the bottom of my heart.. Thank you Fred for sharing my journey to a self actualisation need.

T. Fields was great! My son decided last minute to take the June SAT after his May SAT score wasn’t what he had hoped. He had about 8 days to prep. Tristan responded right away & was willing to work with what we wanted. No set minimum of sessions, no sales pitch. My son met with him 3 times, and Tristan’s knowledge of the test was impressive! He has such insight, tips & targeted help- the one on one with Tristan honestly blew the other group prep classes away! My son took the SAT again & was confident he improved his score. He was able to use the strategy Tristan taught him, and felt prepared in the math section. We won’t get the scores until July 11.... But we are feeling hopeful! Stay tuned. Tristan was kind, polite, professional & again, his in depth knowledge of the SAT is invaluable. S.T in CT

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
