They were very prompt and worked really hard. The end result look of the tree looks a little odd, but probably little could be done about that. (a large tree was being topped). Only thing I can say is maybe in a couple places the tree could have had some upper branches trimmed a little so as to make it a better shape but this would have been difficult. They took away all the brush for a little extra $.

Rocky came a gave me an estimate that I could not refuse and they came that weekend to cut down and remove two trees and three big limbs off another tree that was hanging over a street. When they arrived they got right down to business. One of the trees was at least 90 ft. tall and one of his crew climbed up and cut down the limbs and trunk like it was nothing. I was amazed as how fast and safely he was moving. They were very professional and when the work was done, they cleared up all the debris and you would had never known those trees were even there. They did an outstanding job and the price was reasonable. Rocky and his team are respectable and highly recommended. I would definitely hire GreenLeaf Landscape again for future projects.

Moises and his guys removed a dead birch tree, a dead spruce and trimmed a large spruce. The team obviously work together all the time; they were very organized and thorough. They offered to replant a few dislodged plants that were close to the birch tree. My neighbor actually asked Moises for some work that he was able to complete the same day. They spoke English and were friendly while being professional. They cleaned up "everything" before leaving. I would definitely recommend them.

CT Green just trimmed a very large tree in our backyard. It had to be done without any heavy equipment since the tree is behind a garage and three other property lines are right next to it. They did an excellent job with a skilled climber and crew. The clean up was thorough and all the debris was carried to the front of our property to be put through the chipper. It required a full day with a full crew. The cost was very reasonable and came in below three other quotes. We highly recommend this company and will utilize them in future needs. The climber also had to make peace with a large, hissing resident raccoon without displacing it! The tree was wrapped with tenacious vines that they removed along with the heavy canopy. It looks wonderful!

Pedro was prompt and attentive. He’s the first lawn professional I hired for my new home and certainly one of the hardest workers I’ve had to the property. I anticipated a small team, but Pedro assured me he could single-handed meet all of my needs. He worked consciously and meticulously for hours until he’d completed every request I made, including some last minute tree trimming and decorative edging. His pricing was reasonable and his demeanor was respectful and professional. I’ll definitely be hiring him again and I encourage you to do the same!

Adam and his staff were the best company hands down in my 40 years here on Long Island. Professional from beginning to end and more importantly after. I forgot about another tree I had wanted done after my complete landscape remodel including sod front and back was finished. Not only did Adam take care of it personally he did it as a courtesy not charging us. Treetastic has my and my families business for life.

Matt and his team were hired to clean the gutters at my mother's home. As a retired widow and wonderful woman of a certain age, my mother was anxious about hiring a contractor on her own because my father had managed home repair/improvement. Since he died, many home maintenance jobs have not been done - especially the gutters. Matt came to her home and was very kind and thorough when providing an estimate. I appreciated that he took the time to look at the gutters because it gave my mother the comfort that he could be trusted because he "didn't pull a figure out of the air" (mom's quote). On the day of the job, Matt arrived with his team of three and introduced them to my mother. The men were timely, very friendly and thorough. The gutters were bad - 4" of cement-like build up with little saplings growing out of it! The guys got rid of it in an hour. The experience was excellent. I recommend Matt and, if my mom used a computer, she would post a recommendation too!

Denise Martin and AJM Earth – an incredibly effective small landscape team – have given me back the garden started 25 years ago and all but lost of late to benign neglect and some overly successful Sea Oats. The combination of horticultural and excavation experience was just what this project needed. My initial inquiry was answered right away and we met to survey the “garden” just a few days later. This fact alone is telling of how very professional, organized, and responsive AJM Earth is. Denise and her husband Joe, as well as third team member Carlos, were great about listening to what I wanted as well as suggesting innovative solutions for what else was needed – and then delivering on schedule and on budget. In late September, the heavy equipment rolled in and all the overgrown beds were “grubbed out”, large stone steps were assembled to my exacting specs, and an amazing Gabion basket wall (one of those innovative suggestions) now permanently shores up an old wood retaining wall. Finally, a back yard screening border was planted with some of my favorite trees and shrubs. All this was accomplished by the team of three who seem to do the work of ten. And do it happily! Whatever your landscaping goal, whether you have no fixed notion or, like me, know what you want but need a ton of help to achieve it, Denise and her team are the ones to call. You will be as impressed and delighted as I am. December 2017

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
