I originally contacted Stephen McKenna for a window problem and then extended my request to include some exterior painting and several smaller indoor jobs of various types. Stephen showed up right at the scheduled time and is very pleasant to deal with.

Anthony installed a glass backsplash in my kitchen. He was very professional and easy to work with. His pricing is fair, and he was completely transparent about specific costs of the job. ER Construction is by far the best company we have ever had do work on our home. We have had some horrible experiences in the past with contractors who didn't show up, finish work promised, were sloppy and rude. ER Construction has finished all the work in our 1850 colonial and it has surpassed our expectations. The painting, floor refinishing, ceiling repair, and floor installation has been incredible and we are having them paint the exterior as well. We are very happy and satisfied and are recommending them to everyone we know!

.RMPaolino Construction was contracted to remodel my unfinished basement and install baseboard heat throughout my house. Mr. Paolino and his team did an outstanding job planning and accomplishing this difficult job. The work was scheduled so that it caused me very little inconvenience and all phases of the job were completed on schedule. All of the work and construction materials were of professional grade, and the overall price tag was more than reasonable. I intend to hire Mr. Paolino to do other work on my property. Because my house is 114 years old, many adjustments and accommodations had to be made in order to accomplish everything I wanted. Nevertheless, Mr. Paolino worked around all of the obstacles and got everything done that I requested. And it looks great. I highly recommend his services. The overall project included the items listed below. 1. Cleared the basement of all junk and debris. 2. Removed the old boiler from the basement and 12 radiators and pipes throughout the house. 3. Removed all of the old steam piping, old excess electrical wires and unused gas lines running through the basement. 4. Removed all artificial walls, ceilings and floors throughout the basement. 5. Installed a brand new modern boiler and enclosed it with walls with sliding doors for access. 6. Installed baseboard heaters throughout the three-story house. 7. Replaced numerous copper water pipes with fiberglass pipes and insulated the copper piping that was not replaced. 8. Replaced seven basement windows with new windows. 9. Restored the worn brick walls of the basement 10. Framed the entire basement and installed insulation. 11. Installed and painted dry wall throughout the basement. 12. The electrical circuit box was replaced and electrical and cable ready outlets were installed all around the walls. The electrical circuit breaker, gas meter and water meter were enclosed in a small room with an access door. 13. A utility area was created on a raised platform where a washer, dryer, and sink were installed. 14. The basement floor was covered with an industrial strength carpet. 15. A drop ceiling with large panels with embedded florescent lights was installed.

I do not even know where to start. If Bruce lived in a different time he would have been a Renaissance man. He possesses a masterful blend of artistry and intellect. The first project he did for us was to redo a simple laundry room. This entailed making templates and installing granite for a counter with a sink and a making a folding table/counter. He had to repair some sheet rock and repaint the room. The results were impressive. The second job he did was design and build a workbench for my art studio. His architectural renderings were impressive. He measured the length of my arms to insure I was able to reach the peg board behind the work bench. He thought to install a length of electrical outlets beneath the lip of the bench. The side drawers are easily opened and closed and the paper trays are large enough to hold my watercolor paper. He is extremely meticulous and his work shows this. He installed glass doors in the basement studio to allow more light to enter the area. When this wasn't sufficient, he cut through the concrete and installed a window (with molding and a sill). His masterpiece was the deck he built for us. With Bruce's skill and our artistic input he produced a showpiece deck. The three tiered deck allows for minimal visual obstruction of the woods below. He installed tiny lights on the stairs to make them safer in the evening. He thought of these. He made a portion of the deck curved to provide harmony with the landscaping. Again, his renderings were precise and impressive. He laid everything out carefully and was always thinking ahead. Our deck is magnificent. He handled all the paperwork for the permits as well. On a smaller scale Bruce hung paintings, our TV, glass doors leading to a bonus room, fixed all our leaky faucets and provided names when we needed a generator and a water softening system installed. Bruce is one of a kind in that he is masterful in so many areas and knows when to get a consult. He is prompt and ready to work hard. He put in very long hours, cleaned up and just did amazing work. I still look forward to having him finish an upstairs loft, a bathroom in our studio and build a space for a china hutch. I feel so fortunate that we found Bruce and would give him the highest of recommendations. He really is a Master of many things! He is also very easy to talk to and to work with.

I worked directly with Scott and Weathertite for a variety of work at various condominiums that I was a property manager of for fifteen years. Roofing and gutter replacement mostly but also siding repairs, and window replacement too. Never a problem and always complete satisfaction. Additionally, Weathertite installed a new roof and gutters for me personally four years ago. Phil G, Oakville, CT

I am so happy that I chose Mark for our kitchen remodel! Mark listened to my ideas and offered his own suggestions and improvements from his past experiences. After working through the layout together Mark's work was superior quality. He has strong attention to detail, and it showed in his cabinet making and installation. I highly recommend Mark for any project and I know we would be delighted to use him again, or know that our recommendation of Mark encouraged others to move forward with Mark! You will not regret it! From day one Paulino was very responsive to any inquiry I had about the job. He was professional throughout. Due to traffic conditions he was a few minutes behind schedule but he gave me adequate notice of the delay. He was meticulous with the job (interior door installation), completed the job in a timely manner and cleaned up after completion. I highly recommend Paulino Home improvement to anyone who is looking for a door installer!

Jim was very responsive to the initial request by reviewing the job site late the same day. He did an excellent job preparing and repairing the windows. Jim was informative in pointing out elements of the job I missed. He made the modifications and completed the job on time. His price was extremely reasonable. I would use Jim again if I have any additional projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
