FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Since I am set up to teach online and where I live has unpredictable traffic delays, I prefer to teach online. If I have to travel, I will include travel time in the overall rate. I have found over the years that 30 minutes are too few and two hours are the limit - beyond that, students, especially younger ones, find it hard to stay focused. For private individuals, about an hour and a half has proven to be ideal. For simple conversation practice, I can charge less. For tutoring that requires reviewing written work offline, I charge for that time as well. The good news in that case is that I am very fast and pretty accurate, since I have been doing it for more than a decade.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We set up a first meeting in which we discuss the student's goals, challenges, learning style and preferences in materials (textbook or conversation, etc.), and current level. I try to assess the student's current level against rubrics and standard skills. ideally by reviewing examples of recent work (papers, etc.). We discuss the schedule and set up the next meetings and ideally a regular schedule.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
