DJ Marc was very professional and kept the party going on schedule. He was very flexible and knew what to do to handle the late arrival of a large number of guests. He literally didn't miss a beat! And I didn't have to worry about a thing and got to enjoy the dance music! The photo booth ran smoothly as well. Everyone had a blast with the props and Jeremy was there to assist as needed. He's even in one of our pictures! I highly recommend this service and would use them again!

Scott is an incredible musician and a true pleasure to work with. If you're looking for music for your wedding or other event, look no further and book Scott right now. He is very responsive, kind, fair and so easy to work with. He did piano covers of 3 of our favorite songs for our wedding ceremony that were the most beautiful songs we could have ever hoped for, we cried just listening to the quick demos he made for us. Then he, and 3 of his other jazz musicians, played for our outdoor cocktail hour and killed it! People came up to us all night, and still continue to do so 3 days after our wedding, to say how amazing the jazz band was. He is a true talent, visionary, and perhaps most importantly, especially in the wedding industry, a truly good person that wants you to have the most special day of your lives and goes above and beyond to make it so.

He did great with all of our last minute changes, but he didn't play a lot of the music we wanted. We had given him a playlist of salsa music but played a lot of Motown. That is our only issue, but otherwise the Spanish music he did play was great and our family had a blast.

Gary is one of the most talented people I have ever met!! His musical talent and years of experience make working with him very special. I am one of his "older" students and I am thrilled to be a part of one of his bands. Gary provides all students the chance to perform many times during the year which enhances the learning experience. The performances also create a strong and supportive bond among students and family. Because Gary is skilled at so many different instruments and voice, there is truly something for everyone. And, he has a good sense of humor :)

I can not say enough good things about this band! They were the absolute best! They helped me pull off the best surprise, the gift of music, for a special friend! Everyone at the party was raving not only about the sound (which totally rocked!!!!) but the professionalism, personality and overall vibe from them. If you want them for anytime in July in the next upcoming years you better grab them up because all my friends intend too!!

I follow Nico's gigs as regularly as possible and have been doing so ever since her fledgling days as a singer song-writer. I love her original music as it has captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics . She is quite tenacious in getting herself "out there" and in so doing, she leaves me breathless with all the things she does to promote her talents at any one time. I like to go with friends to hang out at her various gigs and be entertained by her while casually enjoying good food rather than a cover band with very loud music. Nico is a very talented singer and musician who plays different instruments equally well.

Marla Mase is an extraordinary event planner, creator of party magic and Producer! After having been in the business for a couple of decades and working in so many different venues, types of events, parties and performances, Marla has an incredible team. She’s amassed a phenomenal, devoted group of performers, artists, designers & caterers whom she employs at all her parties, depending on need and skill set. I have worked with Marla on several creative projects and events and had a ball working with her. She is the ultimate professional, but always works in a relaxed, easygoing fashion. She is open to discussion and will always brainstorm to bring ones vision to life. Recently she produced a Rock show and party in Tribeca for me that hosted an amazing band, along with several international actors, dancers and singers. Marla hired one of her designers to transform the old Tribeca firehouse into an underworld of sea creatures and magic. It was spectacular. The food was a beautifully abundant array of hors devours and beverages. Hailing from Tribeca and having worked in the New York area for so many years for hundreds of high-end clients, Marla is truly cutting edge. She has an eye for the unique, and is able to adapt to the vision of her client. Marla really gets the job done. She’s personable and lovely and I always feel I’m in good hands with her at the helm.

I contracted with Rorie Kelly to perform music at two events on Staten Island, NY sponsored by a non-profit organization. She was extremely responsive to performing in two different types of environments (one very large all-ages festival and one more intimate performance for a 21+ audience). She was professional throughout the contracting process and at her actual performances. She arrived early and was responsive to all venue and organization requests. The audience loved Rorie's performances on both occasions. You can tell that Rorie is able to genuinely connect with audiences to create a special experience for everyone listening, regardless of the venue. The non-profit organization and members of the audience have both requested Rorie's return for future events, which she has done under another individual's coordination. I would highly recommend Rorie Kelly as a performer at any type of event you may be putting together, she is a joy work with and her performances are wonderful!

I had started getting into Latin music a little over a year ago when I met first met Nick Herman. Originally, I tried to learn to play Latin percussion (congas, bongos, timbales etc.) from books and instructional videos. I also tried lessons with a few different musicians. I was at it for months, however, I found my progress to be very slow. Eventually, I confronted Nick about lessons. After only 5 lessons, my bongo playing had improved exponentially! I would play my bongos with other musicians in the park and after one or two songs, many people would compliment me on my playing. One night I played a duet with a guitarist who would compliment me on my playing after every song. Later, I came to find out he was the leader of a salsa band who frequently performed around the city! Shortly after that I made Nick my official trainer on the bongos and cowbell! Nick Herman also leads his own band. I think anyone who is serious about learning Latin percussion would benefit greatly by having Nick as an instructor. I wish I had began lessons with him sooner!

Chanan was a joy to work with! Knowledgeable and skilled and very creative. He helped produce a record of sacred music for me and also provided back up guitar for my band when needed a few times in Dallas. He is an exceptional engineer and guitar player with a fine ear for detail.

Helene was my piano teacher from kindergarten through high school. She taught me how to read, understand, play and love music. Furthermore, my early -and in-depth- start with piano prepared me for years of trumpet in various advanced bands. Although I am not currently taking lessons, I still sit down to play piano whenever I get the chance. I'll play anything from Bach to Beethoven to Josh Groban to new and classic Disney - really anything I'm in the mood for. Helene's teaching has made me proficient enough in piano and music in general such that I can truly enjoy playing. Thanks Helene!!

Honestly can't say enough about how great these guys are. Peter Maness was super professional and easy to deal with and found the whole band to be extremely talented and very friendly :) most importantly for us though, they really played fun and energetic show that had all our guests up and dancing immediately. Everyone had a blast and are still telling me how much they enjoyed our band. Our wedding music was really important to us so I'm happy to say that these guys knocked it out of the park. Thanks a ton!! -Christi M, East Setauket, NY

I hired Peter to play an outdoor party that I do every year to entertain friends and a few clients. This is the first time that I hired an entertainer, I usually just play my stereo in the background. Peter changed the entire atmosphere of the party. For starters, he sounded like a full band with his backup tracks. Then he accommodated so many of my guests requests. He is like a literal walking library of music. He did all kinds of pop rock hits and even accommodated a request for Sinatra and Roy Orbison. Then I asked for some Motown and dance. He literally covered all of our requests and even entertained with a few impressions of stars. We had a blast when Peter did a few sing along tunes. I didn't know so many people love to sing. Well, I definitely recommend Peter and plan to have him back next year.

Mark Dover was my son Jordan's first clarinet teacher; they worked together for about two and a half years when Jordan was in middle school. (We would happily have continued with Mark if he had not moved out of town to attend graduate school.) Mark did a fabulous job. He made the lessons fun for Jordan, and he always kept me informed about Jordan's progress. I occasionally sat in on lessons and noticed that Mark was always positive and encouraging but nevertheless held Jordan to high standards. I enjoyed seeing their rapport. What I didn't realize until later (not being a musician myself) was that Jordan was getting a very solid introduction to the fundamentals of the clarinet. Those first years with Mark positioned him to succeed in a very well-regarded and competitive high school music program. By the end of his senior year, Jordan was first chair in both his high school's Symphony Band and the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association's All-State Band (of which he was a five-time member). He was also offered music scholarships at several different colleges. So yes, Mark is a great clarinet teacher. He is also a good, kind person. Two years after Mark moved away, we had a devastating death in the family. I will always be grateful that Mark came to visit Jordan to offer his condolences--and that he brought his clarinet! Nothing could have been more comforting than hearing the two of playing together again. My review in a nutshell: Mark's an outstanding clarinetist, a dedicated teacher, and an all-around good guy. I would hire him again in a second.

Hired Anthem for a birthday party and it went great. They sound exactly like the bands they cover and put on a great show. They're pro, no goofy embarrassing talk between songs and the price was right. The sound was great and they DJ'd during the breaks. Would definitely rehire. Thanks guys!

About

Los Chamanes is a musical group serving a fusion rooted in Nueva Cancion and Latin-American folklore, with flavors of jazz, rock and blues that was born from the spirit of friendship between these Chilean expatriates in NYC, a nostalgia for the magic of the Andes and their native culture. In September 2008, they released Conjuros—their first album—available on digital downloads and CD. Initially, the band interpreted songs from authors of Argentina and Chile such as Fito Páez, Violeta Parra, Peteco Carabajal, Victor Jara, Congreso, etc. With time, they have increasingly combined their own compositions—which now represent almost all of their repertoire—through which they hope to guide their listeners to reflect on issues such as our behavior as a species and social injustice through the healing and inspiring power of music and poetry. Los Chamanes hold a residency monthly at Terraza in Queens, and have entertained at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and for the Chile Independence yearly event in Randall's Island. They were the opening act of the concerts of Mariana Baraj and Fernando Ubiergo, and have appeared in various "peñas" (folkloric shows), cafés, restaurants and events in the NY Tri-State area. In 2009, they were on a tour twice in Puerto Rico. They performed at the Noche de Viaje Cultural, at an event organized by the Chilean community in association with the city and in Old San Juan. They were invited at the TV show, Buenas Noches con Silverio on Canal 13 and on 2 radio shows of the University of PR. They've recently contributed to various benefits for the victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Chile.

We are a dynamic, diverse, ultra-professional Latin ensemble with a sizzling sound that blends traditional Latin, Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and Brazilian music with the sophistication of jazz. We have a great following mainly because we've established ourselves as unique from the more typical Latin bands. We're known for taking familiar love songs from legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder and The Beatles, and putting our refreshing Latin spin on them. We are truly passionate about what we do and take great care in customizing our song list and presentation to fit your exact venue or event. If you want "Caliente" and dancing, we never fail! We do it all - cha-cha, merengue, salsa, bachata, etc. If you want it more reserved and ambient, we can provide a smooth, more sophisticated sound to create the perfect backdrop for a more formal event. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
