Did a recent move with Simply Moving and it was a great experience. All of the communication beforehand was great. The people I spoke with were knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. On the day of the move, the movers arrived on time and were extremely efficient. They went through the list of items I submitted to move and made sure each item was there. I had a few extra boxes which they were ok with that I did not indicate earlier. They did a great job and did it all with a smile. I would definitely use these movers again and recommend them to anyone! Also, I reached out to a lot of different companies and Simply Moving had the best price.

Honestly I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Alex (the one I interfaces with) and Alex (the moving day head guy) were fantastic. They showed up about a half hour early, which was beyond fine by since I was all packed up and ready to go. Early start, early finish. Unlike other moving companies I have felt with in the past, Dyno was very clear and upfront about their charges! NO SURPRISE charges or surcharges. Let alone these guys were HONEST! Don't let the youngness of the company fool you, they are very experienced and care about their customers. Would gladly hire them again and recommend them.

I am writing to thank you for the excellent service i received from the SEKA MOVING company. The movers asked me to point out all of my fragile boxes – they loaded them one by one into the truck, carefully keeping them apart from everything else in the attic of the truck. That was the biggest concern i had with hiring any moving companies that no one cares fragile materials, but they did. They were also very concerned about damaging my furniture, walls. In addition to being careful with my things they showed up on time, the movers were clean, fun to converse with, worked very hard, and didn't stop the whole time they were there. We were also impressed with the team of movers who took such good care of our belongings. They took great care to make sure everything was protected and accounted for – and they were a delight to be around, they were always on time and over delivered on our expectations and timeline. This team worked flawlessly to meet our deadlines.

Great Movers gave me the best price i could find in the area and i had 5 quotes from different moving companies. This one was the most clear and appropriate quote. I had much stuff to move but it was really cheaper than other companies. Danny and his team performed their job very well. They wrapped and packed everything superbly. All wrapping and packing came with the service. I absolutely recommend Great Movers.

We hesitated to work with a relatively smaller company compared to FlateRate, etc (we’ve had our bike stolen and bed frame broken with other small moving companies) but picked these guys because of the greats reviews and I am so happy that I did. These guys are AMAZING. David was very prompt in getting back to me when making an appointment, negotiating a price, getting COIs and the actual move. They arrived in the morning and started loading at a lightening speed. I watched them carefully wrapping furnitures, TVs, mirrors and even my exercise bike! And they made sure if I had any fragile items in my boxes then took extra care when stacking them. My roommate and I were moving from one 2 bedroom to two different studio units and they made sure to separate each belonging. When we arrived at the new place, unloading was even faster and I got all my stuff carefully placed at where I wanted them to be. I normally don’t write online reviews like this but I decide to do so mainly because of their quality service and, smiles - throughout the whole move, on the hottest day. I move every two years and had worked with numerous moving companies and fair price movers was by far the best of all. Thanks for making our move a breeze.

I hired CCS Moving to move my furniture from my 1 bedroom apartment from uptown to my new residence in downtown Manhattan. The movers were courteous and professional and since I work crazy hours, I needed them to pack my items for me, as I was moving at the end of the month. I had previously contacted several moving companies but they all could not accommodate the time frame I needed my move completed in. CCS made every effort to ensure I would have no problems. They handled everything and their pricing was very fair. I would recommend CCS to anyone who is planning to move. I will be moving again once my lease is up and I plan on using CCS again. I also have recommended them to a few of my friends and family. Thank you CCS for making everything so much easier. I wish I could give more than 5 stars for such wonderful service.

Dariusz and company were excellent moving men. They took careful care of our old and valuable and extremely heavy furniture. We had items being moved from the basement, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor with no complaints, unlike other moving companies. They were prompt and on time even though the forecast called for rain. Highly recommended, 5 stars. Thanks

I called several moving companies for a local move from Manhattan to Brooklyn. I was moving a small apartment but stopping to pick up additional items at a storage unit along the way. The prices quoted were very similar. I decided to go with Blue Moving because, unlike the others who just gave me a quote, Mitko was very helpful, asking me several questions to help determine which moving situation would be best. He also provided some helpful tips about moving within the city like travel time and elevator restrictions. The moving crew was very timely and efficient. The morning of the move we had a problem resulting in us not being able to move into the new apartment that same day. Mitko went out of his way to move trucks and crews to be able to make a next day move work for us. Since I was arranging this move for my daughter from 3000 miles away, it was such a relief to have someone as helpful and knowledgable as Mitko and the Blue Moving crew to make it all work out. The next day move was perfect and very fast. Thanks Mitko and the crew!

Voyo and his team were wonderful to work with. We took a slight risk hiring a new moving company with less reviews, but my husband and I were really happy with the result. They had guaranteed quotes to us in minutes after requesting, they answered all of our questions during the process, and the movers showed up on time and were quick and efficient during the process. They took good care of our furniture and boxes, and respected the building policies. I would highly recommend the Piece of Cake Moving team!!

She was great in terms of organizing my place! I recently moved and I was feeling very overwhelmed unpacking. She was efficient and had great organizational ideas on how to manage things in a small NYC apartment. I would definitely hire her again for help!

Matt was SUCH a pleasure to work with. Very responsive. Very thorough. And very professional. He hung new mirrored closet doors for me in my N.Y. apartment. We learned half way through the job that it was much more complex than we’d foreseen because of undulations in the old floor. He went into problem solving mode and figured things out. He ended up putting in an extra 90 minutes just being meticulous about getting things right. I’d highly recommend him for any small jobs around the house!

Long Island Removal provided an absolutely exceptional service and experience. I had them help me move apartments (3 bedrooms + 1 family room worth of stuff) and pickup numerous items from Craigslist. I am HUGE on reviews, and I was skeptical that this company had such positive ratings. Further, after contacting the company, I received a quote that was extremely reasonable (in fact, I was about 10x more skeptical after receiving the quote, because I though that there must be a catch). That said, the Long Island Removal team showed up on time, communicated clearly before, during, and after the move, and transported all of my items safely. They got the job done super well and super fast, and I was left believing that the day went "too good to be true." I would strongly, strongly encourage you to request a quote from Long Island Removal. I'm sure that they will move your items as efficiently as they moved my items. There were one or two very small mishaps during the move but nothing that meaningfully impacted my experience. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, as I'd be more than happy to talk about my interactions with Long Island Removal's employees and the move as a whole. I don't think that you'll find better value for your dollar; I've already recommended the company to my friends!

Considering they're charging by the hour the movers were working at an exceptionally slow pace. One of the movers kept stopping completely tp chit chat and flirt with me and show me his hobbies on his phone, or was wandering around aimlessly with one object not knowing where to put it down. Another mover broke the leg off of one of my wardrobes and took a half hour detour to get tools to replace it, then spent an hour of his time just putting the foot of that wardrobe on to the furniture again. Even with a slight discount due to that fact, I felt like having 3 people move a small room of stuff to a studio 2 miles down the road to the new apartment should not have taken more than 4 hours.

I needed help in moving a full-size refrigerator in to my third floor unit. Rich and Donald did an outstanding job. They arrived on time, they were very patient and tactfully maneuvered through the narrow doors. They were very careful and handled it as if they were moving their own refrigerator. I will definitely use them again for any help I need around the house. It’s very hard to find good people, I am glad I contacted them. I will strongly recommend them to all my friends and neighbors!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
