This was our first experience using Thumbtack and the job required that our newly delivered trundle-day bed (in 3 boxes) be moved up 2 flights of stairs, unpacked, and then assembled. We selected David Carota to do the job, and we are so glad we did. David is reliable, punctual, and a true professional. He reached out to us to confirm the day & time, and asked us if we could send pictures of the final product before he arrived to get an idea of what it would look like. We were extremely impressed with his work ethic. He not only worked quickly but also very carefully & methodically. It took him 2 hours to complete the job, where normally it would take 2 people about 2 hrs to do, according to the directions. His price was also very reasonable. He has expertise in other areas including woodworking, metal work, etc. We were so pleased with his work that we're trying to think of other jobs he can help us with so that we can request him again!! It is rare to find someone who is so well-rounded & such a pleasure to work with. Thank you very much, David!!

Jofre, Edison, Juan and the others in the crew did an excellent job. I am more than pleased. They transformed my house and my deck into something that each time I drive up to it or sit on my deck, I feel on top of the world. It's a good feeling when your house looks so good when before it looked just so-so or worse. My house needed painting as well as wood to replace the trim and other areas that had rotted. They replaced the rotted wood on the house, and did the same with the deck for the planks and the steps and the gazebo area where a hot tub once stood. Then they worked their magic with the paint. I highly recommend JCEC. They are professional and clearly take pride in their work.

Bruno was a pleasure to work with - smart, clear, professional and a genuine craftsman. He created (from scratch), enormous 10' tall bookshelves for our living room and then installed them. The installation was especially tricky as we're in an old house with no straight lines so Bruno had to, literally, measure out each shelf individually so they could be moved about. He stuck to his very reasonable estimate and we're loving our shelves. Picture is shelves going up - pics of them filled with books to come : )

Working with Scott was easy. He gets right back to you. Shows up on time and does quality work. Honest and fair priced. He did my complete kitchen renovation, new shutters, front door install, and crown moulding with wainscot throughout my home. He's installing a new deck for me this spring. I would definitely recommend him.

We have hired Tom several times in the last few years for carpentry related problems. One project was a persistent leak from three large bay windows. Tom ripped out all the old wood and installed Azek (pvc type wood) so we wouldn't have to paint anymore- Hooray! He also eliminated a small window and matched the vinyl siding after removal of the window. He continued to follow up with us to make sure there were no more leaks. His last project was to install a screen door on the outside of a French door to the porch. This required some Tom-type ingenuity to make sure the door worked properly. Tom pays great attention to the details at a reasonable price. We recommend him highly!

We hired Hammers Custom Carpentry to semi-finish our basement using FRP panels - we selected them from 2 other Thumbtack providers based on their experience and reasonable pricing. Installation required great precision to cut & install the panels around many obstacles (like pipes) in the walls. Harvey & Don's work showed craftsmanship, e.g. taking the extra time to trim out around windows and doors properly. They were also very friendly & professional, as they arrived on time every day and worked diligently. It's clear that Harvey wants to build a strong relationship with his customers by going the extra mile and I will absolutely contact them again.

Fred Albee built a bookcase that came out magnificent. The great thing was that during the design process Fred provided some unique design ideas because of his vast amount of experience and hands on craftsmanship. When we first spoke I asked about a bookcase and what was delivered was a piece of furniture that included crown molding and base molding that was meticulously mitered into the existing room moldings. The finish was perfect and flawless. EXCELLENT JOB!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
