Harry was awesome! We had what I thought was a leaky pipe in the basement but turned out to be a leak higher up behind the actual shower head. We were worried about needing to remove tiles or cutting into the sheetrock on the other side, but Harry did everything he could to avoid that, and was actually able to take care of the issue without any mess. Three things stood out to me in my experience with Harry which make me happy to recommend him to others: 1.Harry couldn't come out the day I made the thumbtack request but he helped me troubleshoot the issue over the phone and via text. Never had anyone offer that before. 2. Harry is super nice. Friendly, upbeat, extremely personable. I generally don't like people so that's saying a lot! 3. His rates are reasonable and he charged for the exact amount of time he was here. No rounding up an extra hour, no funny $20 charges for a $2 part. I'm pretty frugal (or cheap if you ask my wife) so I appreciated that. Very glad I called him. Will not hesitate to call him for future jobs when needed.

Brian came right over (on a Sunday evening) and has followed up conscientiously to solve the problems caused by flooding in the basement. He's extremely responsive and easy to work with. We'll definitely call on him again if we run into further difficulties. Highly recommended.

For U Builders replaced 7 basement windows for us. The introduction/quote visit was excellent. Really nice folks! Follow up was good. Brandon stayed on top of our order and kept us informed. Install was great. Leon tailored the trim to the space so it wasn't a "one size fits all" install. Very much appreciate that - and they were done earlier in the day than we expected. This would be a 5 star review if the time between the initial appointment and the installation hadn't been over 6 weeks. We understand the windows come from PA, and there was the Thanksgiving holiday in there, but that's twice as long as unexpected/were told.

They did a wonderful job when our basement flooded. We had about 3-4 inches of water in the basement. We were overwhelmed and making little progress when I sought out a company on Thumbtack. They were at my home bright and early the next day, and when they were done the basement was cleaner/better smelling than it was before. The employees were extremely professional, cleaned up after themselves and were punctual. Can't ask for anything more. I hope I never see them again :) but if my basement floods again I know who to call.

We had an incident where one of our basement windows had broken. Victor came to the house the next day to measure the three windows for replacement (we decided now was the time to replace them all). That evening we had an estimate emailed to us, and the pricing was good. Victor ordered the windows, and the day they came in he called to schedule installation for the next day. He was on time, quick, and the work is very high quality. After installation he walked us through opening the windows, showing the completed work, and gave us recommendations regarding the rain/snow covers we had over the windows. We have plans for the basement which includes finishing it, update flooring, etc and plan to work with Victor for that as well.

Over the course of two months Chris remodeled a basement studio apartment for me. He gutted the existing bathroom, nstalled vinyl flooring, did a new bathroom, built shelves, painted, did plumbing and electric work, installed a small kitchen and did a number of other odd jobs on the property. Chris is a master craftsmen who is a perfectionist with his work. His prices are reasonable and he is 100 percent honest and trustworthy. I even gave him a blank check once for materials. I am using my unit as an airbnb apartment and guests regularly comment on the craftsmanship of the apartment and specifically the bathroom. I really can't say enough good things about Chris. I plan on using him for all my work from here on out. I will let the photos speak for themselves.

Danny and his crew refinished my basement. I was very busy with a new baby and he handled everything. Delivery of materials, making sure he didn't come before 8:30 and wake the baby up, and knowing that I had a newborn upstairs kept any dirt or dust from traveling into our living space. A true professional. That is only one of the projects. I have used him multiple times over the past year. He and his entire crew are true craftsman in every sense of the word.

Mike has been hired for numerous jobs over several years. He completely renovated two bathrooms and our kitchen before moving into a new home for our family, while our house was on the market our washer machine hose let go and damaged our first and second floor of our colonial, Mike came through and calmed us down and went step by step how everything would be fixed and really took the pressure and stress off of us. He turned the house over to us in less than 30 days. My insurance adjuster was shocked due to the extent of work that needed to be done and praised how great the house looked when it was completed during his final walk through. Mike does odd jobs for us along the way and this week just finished renovating our basement in our new house. Mike is very knowledgeable and professional. His work is always completed on time and budget but also the number of compliments regarding the quality and workmanship of our renovations definitely makes Goodman Building Company our first and last stop with all home projects and renovations.

Frank did a beautiful job on our kitchen. It's a big room which included a bathroom and basement landing, and the limestone we chose was expensive and not something we were sure that everyone could work with. Additionally, our application in our 75 year old house was "complicated." After our first meeting with Frank we were sure that he had the expertise and knowledge to handle all the challenges. We were correct. He was meticulous, worked neatly, kept us informed and rolled with the changes with which our house surprised us. He does beautiful work, and is pleasant t have in your home.

I chose the Parvin Group to remodel my basement and it was the best decision I ever made. His attention to detail and workmanship was excellent. If something did not line up perfectly, he made sure his guys redid it. There were no cutting corners and he was extremely responsive throughout the whole upgrade process. Every time guest come over, the are blown away with the transformation. They were even more amazed when I told them how much it all cost. His pricing was very competitive with other quotes I received. He is now my go to guy for all my remodeling needs. I trust his work and I know the job with be done right the first time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
