Namzi is an excellent tutor- he's tutoring my 15 year old son to get a head start on geometry this summer. He's knowledgeable, patient, and thorough. My son's comment, after his first lesson with Namzi was- "he explains really well". He also seems to work well with my son, who's usually quiet and shy to open his mouth. Namzi was able to draw out answers from him and made him comfortable to interact with him during their first session.

When we started preparing for the TACHS and the high school admissions process, we really were directionless about where to apply, what to look for in a school, what the TACHS was all about, or how to even go about preparing for it. Jeremy walked us through the process, worked patiently with our son, directed us to resources to reinforce the material, and gave him the confidence and he needed to be able to walk out of the test feeling like he aced it. Furthermore, Jeremy was professional, easy to work with, and his enthusiasm for helping kids achieve their maximum potential makes the difference between a good tutor and a great tutor.

I have always hated math and have memories of being yelled at to finish my homework and being in tears because I simply did not understand it. This fear of math started in elementary school and carried itself all the way to college where I had to start in remedial math courses. I now am in the process of studying for a big test and needed help to develop the skills needed to do well on the math portion. Peter was able to simplify the process so that I could better understand this basic math. He never made me feel bad when I had to count with fingers, yikes! I feel I have improved greatly in just the 2 sessions we've had. I'm very excited to improve even more! Who knew I'd come to be excited for a math lesson! Thank you Peter.

Mr. Parez was my tutor in high school for about a year to help me prepare for the SAT exam. The tutoring sessions were very convenient because they were done over Skype. Having the tutoring sessions done over Skype cut out time/money that would have been put into travel. Mr. Parez was always accommodating when it came to scheduling my tutoring sessions around my busy schedule. Mr. Parez had me take a preliminary SAT exam to see the areas of the exam I excelled in and which areas I struggled with. He helped me improve significantly in the areas I struggled in through various personalized lessons and homework assignments. Mr. Parez helped me to raise my score significantly. I believe that achieving a higher score on the SAT exam made me a stronger College applicant and helped me to get into 7 out of 7 Colleges that I applied to, including my top choice, of which I am now in attendance. I highly recommend Mr. Parez for any of you tutoring needs.

Dave is a wonderful tutor flexible, sensitive and most of all very dedicated to his students. Dave was recommended to me and I would recommend him to anyone. In addition Dave is able to tutor any grades from elementary school to college level. Finally, Dave provides a sense of safety and trust to his students that in my opinion represents the necessary qualities of any tutor who works towards the progress of his students. - - - - - - - - -

John is a very good teacher - he helped me gain confidence behind the wheel and on the road. I learned a lot in the few lessons that I've had with him, things that go beyond the license test. He is very patient, concise and attentive!

Jer is an all around great tutor. The range of subjects he can help with is truly amazing. We hired him to help with standardized testing, AP Statistics and AP Calculus. He has a great demeanor, he is well prepared for lessons, and he is really able to explain concepts very well which is the key. I highly recommend him!

My son was on a waiting list for a year for piano lessons with Debi Stevenson. We were just about to look for another teacher when we finally got the call, and we know now how lucky we are we waited. He's excelled far beyond our expectations, loving it from day one. Debi holds the perfect characteristics for a teacher: gracious and kind; talented and inspiring. She motivates her kids through many creative means, keeping them excited during lessons and assigning challenging, kid-focused projects that keep them inspired all year long. My son practices on his own, never having to be told. Debi provided him a foundation for learning and a love of music that has already -- in just two years -- moved him on to other instruments and to composing music on his own. She's a great teacher.

I've been getting tutored by Chloe for about 4 years now and my math skills have improved tremendously. I started meeting with her my junior year of high school and I am now a sophomore in college. I've received help from kaplan math tutors and school tutors and I've felt the most comfortable with Chloe. One of the attributes that sets her apart from all of the other math tutors that I've had is her patience while working with me. Math is a subject that takes me hours worth of studying to get a decent grade on and she's had the patience to teach various lessons over and over again , in different ways until I fully understand it. I would highly recommend her, she is accommodating to your schedule and makes learning math easier!

I am a 24 year old college student and I needed to take a statistics class to complete my undergraduate degree. I am a pretty average student when it comes to math, and the only class available was an online course that was mostly self-taught. Diane helped me understand the weekly lessons, and also helped me with my term project as well as prepping for my exams. I would definitely hire her again should I need any help with my graduate school math classes. She is a great teacher and I would highly recommend her.

Jordan Rochelson is a superstar with children and the grown-ups who are their parents. He is enthusiastic, attentive, thoughtful, kind, reliable, creative, intelligent, upbeat, engaging and engaged, and lots of fun. Our family has missed Jordan very much since he moved from New York. He takes seriously the responsibility and boundary-setting that comes with being in charge of children — from insisting upon waiting for the light change to cross a NYC street to expecting respectful behavior and tones of voice. And yet, my kids — who view rules as things to question and push against — looked forward to every interaction with Jordan. His main job with our family was bringing kids to and from after school, walking with them on the streets of New York City. I don't grant that job easily, but I didn't worry with Jordan. He has also stayed overnight with our kids (one boy, two girls) and he has babysat Saturday evenings. Once he babysat our three kids and three of their friends; he created an entire treasure hunt all over the house for six children, ages 4 to 10. Jordan is a gem.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
