This is the second bathroom project Teddy (Cook Contacting and Remodel) has done for us. We are once again thrilled with the results! Teddy is meticulous and thorough from start to finish. There are no short cuts, everything was done to perfection. We are writing this 2 years after the first bathroom and 2 months after the second. I add that because we have not had any problems and have been enjoying both bathrooms thoroughly. There was one issue with the toilet tank handle because we had picked out a separate one to match the sink. It needed an adjustment and Teddy came right over to adjust it. He is very available, always answers his texts. He also is an artist when it comes to design and colors and has great ideas. The tile work is so pretty and we get tons of compliments. We have several more projects that we are planning on Cook Contracting and Remodel to do, he does just about everything. We like that he does the work himself so you know exactly who is in your house. We just gave him a key and didn't worry about a thing!

My remodeling project is still a work in progress. Brian is providing quality workmanship, has left the work area immaculate at the end of the day, and has kept me updated and involved every step of the way with our project by providing me pictures and prices of hardware, tiles, vanities etc. which is extremely helpful to me due to my work schedule and just not finding time to shop around! It is a pleasure working with a contractor who understands our budget, and is enthusiastic in accomplishing an updated, modern, and fresh look for this older bathroom. Thanks Brian!

Dan was hired to assemble and install IKEA cabinets in the kitchen. He did an impressive job they look beautiful. It was part of remodeling of our kitchen and as a contractor he scheduled his time around and with both the electrician and plumber. It soon became apparent that his skills on other parts of the renovation was invaluable. He opened the kitchen up in ways we didn't know was possible and offered ideas in the design that made our little kitchen more spacious then we thought possible. His help with coordinating color and patterns made this old kitchen in to something you might see in a magazine. We love it Thank you Dan! My Mother is a bit of a perfectionist and making her happy can be a task at times, but he accomplished it with a very professional attitude and skill. I have worked with other contractors before who can be tempermental with poor communication and disappearing for weeks at a time Not Dan he always kept me in the loop and was available for every concern. As for any improvement in hind sight the kitchen floor should have been covered the whole time because the plaster dust was somewhat difficult to scrub off the floor. And can I mention he did this while 2 small kids were Home on vacation and often in the way. His patients are to be admired as he always had a good sense of humor and a positive attitude.

After owning our home for over 40 years we were finally ready to remodel the original 1956 master bathroom. We interviewed 4 other contractors before meeting with "For-U-Builders" who seemed to share our vision for transforming our obsolete bathroom into a masterpiece of timeless design combined with quality craftsmanship. Each member of their team, from the owner to the sub-contractors approached the job with professionalism and enthusiasm, along with the in-house coordinator who communicated almost daily with ordering & scheduling details, assuring that the project was well orchestrated from start to finish. We couldn't be happier with the results and feel fortunate to have had this firm complete our dream bathroom on time and at a reasonable (middle of the range) cost. We will surely be using them again for our future projects.

We hired Bruce to remodel and update our bathroom, kitchen and to install washer and dryer hook ups in our 1920 Colonial. The project included new electrical, new drywall, building custom cabinets and doors as well as installing new plumbing. Bruce did not disappoint and the work was excellent and exceeded our expectations. It passed inspection with no problem and we are happy that our historical house now has modern ameneties such as a dishwasher, ceiling fan, and light timers. Bruce communicated with us every step of the way and always made sure to clean the work area (since we had to live in the house during the remodel). I would highly recommend Bruce again.

Mike has been hired for numerous jobs over several years. He completely renovated two bathrooms and our kitchen before moving into a new home for our family, while our house was on the market our washer machine hose let go and damaged our first and second floor of our colonial, Mike came through and calmed us down and went step by step how everything would be fixed and really took the pressure and stress off of us. He turned the house over to us in less than 30 days. My insurance adjuster was shocked due to the extent of work that needed to be done and praised how great the house looked when it was completed during his final walk through. Mike does odd jobs for us along the way and this week just finished renovating our basement in our new house. Mike is very knowledgeable and professional. His work is always completed on time and budget but also the number of compliments regarding the quality and workmanship of our renovations definitely makes Goodman Building Company our first and last stop with all home projects and renovations.

Victor Pires was extremely helpful, when I was going to change my sunroom floor. He suggested different types of flooring and brought samples to help me decide. Victor carried himself in a very professional manner. After he was finished, the clean-up spotless and my floor was beautiful! I would not hesitate to call Victor again for any future remodeling projects!

Chris has performed multiple decorative crown molding projects in our colonial-style home in Pound Ridge, NY. Recently, he installed custom-cut wall panel squares that required very careful measurements, insightful calculations, and superb craftsmanship to properly align panel squares in a room where the walls did not ideally line-up due to off-centered doorways and windows. His experience in navigating through such difficult details, coupled with a keen eye proved critical for the project's success. Thus, we plan to use him again for our cabinetry projects coming up in the near future. Chris is pleasant and cheerful to work with, very reasonable with his rates, and trustworthy and reliable in time and competency. We have not had an episode where we felt a portion of his work needed to be corrected or redone. He communicates issues up front with good clarity, and lays out the scope of the project in clear details; including terms of costs, time, and materials required to complete the project. Chris has a diversity of skills with a long history of experience and deep knowledge on a variety of home carpentry projects, and we found his talents were not just limited to carpentry itself. I recommend contacting him for a quote for your home project, and if you choose to work with him, I'm confident you will be well satisfied given our experience. I should note: we have not used Chris on a large-scale project like a complete kitchen renovation, and thus, our experiences with him are based more on multi-day projects more streamlined to carpentry projects used to enhance our home. However, our experiences with him has given us confidence to work with him in larger capacities going forward.

Originally selected very large contractor with great examples of work and competitive bid only to be very disappointed. Let's just say legal action needed to stop work and we were gun shy selecting a new contractor but ultimately decide on Pro Home Builders. What a world of difference: much more personal attention, subcontractors that took pride in their work, helpful advice and suggestions from the owner, Victor, himself. Wealth of experience that he offers that is invaluable. He identified some structural issues (sloping/crooked support beam) from original builder and worked to rectify them quickly at fair price. Scope of work included replacing poorly installed and kinked HVAC flexpipe with hard conduits for better laminar flow, redoing hardwood floors properly, whole house repainting (so much better quality work), replacing trim, and remodeling bathroom. Don't be fooled by large companies (may promise you world but just subcontract you to lowest bidders or drag your project on forever) or the lowest bid. Pro Home Builders will give you fair competitive price, but more importantly great work that they take pride in (something clear to us after meeting many of the folks working on the house). You can't go wrong just meeting with Victor and getting his thoughts and advice on your project, chances are you'll find he's the right person to trust your home to.

I would gladly recommend Jon's work! Bel Air remodeled my kitchen and master bath, and the work is gorgeous. I couldn't be happier. Bel Air was also the most reasonably priced contractor I found after searching and interviewing several and taking many quotes. The most important piece to me is that Jon warrantees his work and replaced a faulty light switch for free when I called. That's peace of mind.

I chose the Parvin Group to remodel my basement and it was the best decision I ever made. His attention to detail and workmanship was excellent. If something did not line up perfectly, he made sure his guys redid it. There were no cutting corners and he was extremely responsive throughout the whole upgrade process. Every time guest come over, the are blown away with the transformation. They were even more amazed when I told them how much it all cost. His pricing was very competitive with other quotes I received. He is now my go to guy for all my remodeling needs. I trust his work and I know the job with be done right the first time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
