I was extremely satisfied with the 2 men handling my back yard clean up project. They were friendly, came with smiles, showed professionalism and came when they said they would. The job was a good value and I will be hiring them again for some inside carpentry and small project work in the near future.

Harry did a great job with a carpentry project in our house. He is very professional, courteous and was happy to provide us with a detailed break down of the pricing for the job. Most importantly, he managed to complete the work for us within a very tight deadline. Highly recommended!

Marty is a great craftsman. If you want someone to "bang out" a project he may not be your guy. He takes his time and does the project as it should be done. He is also very capable at a number of tasks, but finish carpentry is his true love.

I gave him the task of updating my 1980's home. I needed my master bathroom completely remodeled. He remodeled my master bedroom. Removed a skylight that was leaking and closed up the roof and repaired my ceiling. Removed the fireplace and gave me a linen closet. Ripped up the carpet and installed a new hardwood flood. Painted the bedroom. .My kitchen and dinning room needed to be completely gutted, the wall removed between the rooms and combined into one large room with an island. The cabinets needed to be stripped and refinished. He removed the soffit and added crown molding on the top of the cabinets. Took the refrigerator and pantry cabinet and installed them in the wall to enlarge the kitchen even more. He even changed the entrance from the hallway into the kitchen/dinning from squared off ceiling to an archway which gave the look of a new addition to the home. He knocked out the window in the dinning room and replaced it with a sliding glass door. Built a large back deck for entertaining. Built a gazebo right next the the deck so that I can just walk onto the deck and into the hot tub in the gazebo. Poured a concrete slab. Then installed a hot tub. It looks like a new home throughout. My family and friends would walk into my home and their mouth would just drop open in disbelief. It doesn't even look like the same home. His attention to detail reflects the years of experience this man has in carpentry. When you explain what changes you would like to do to a home. He can tell you what will work and what won't. He brought to my attention that the electrical wiring was not done correctly when my home was built. So I had him correct that as well. Hiring Jacques to update my home was the best decision I ever made. Spending the money for updating and repairing my home was well spent. My home is worth a lot more thanks to Jacques. I would highly recommend him for any size job. He is a one man operation, but gets the job done like a whole crew of men. He constantly keeps the job site clean so the dust is minimal. I would not hesitate to hire this man. He is professional, knows what he is doing and can be trusted with your home.

We were very pleased with the work Dan and his crew did on our cedar siding. He helpfully suggested we experiment with stain colors to be sure we would like the results. Our old shingles sometimes needed to be replaced and the carpentry was well done. We would highly recommend this company and would hire them again for projects. Thank you Dan & all the workers!

JRV Contracting (Joe) was hired to do a major kitchen remodel which included the removal of a load bearing wall that separated the kitchen and living room. He built beautiful structural columns and a kitchen peninsula. Joe also made a custom kitchen cabinet that matched our existing cabinets. His carpentry and wood working skills are of the highest quality. Joe was professional, courteous, and always reachable. He is a fair person, and gave us a very reasonable bid for the project. He worked with our other vendors (granite, flooring, etc...) to ensure everyone was on the same page and that expectations were managed. We are extremely pleased with the completed project, and would be happy to serve as a reference. We will definitely keep in touch with Joe and continue to use him for future projects.

Dan and his crew were great to work with. Exceptional carpentry skills with the ability to effectively handle some plumbing and electrical issues. Best thing about Dan is he is smart. We were rehabbing a 70 year old house and lots of issues came up. Dan consistently came up with good ideas and was a great problem solver. Dan was not finished with the job until I said I was happy, thats pretty cool!

My husband and I hired Mike Goodman to install a replacement picture window, expand a doorway to an interior room, mount our flat screen television and replace a door and trim to our attic stairway. Mike was also able to recommend an electrician to install recessed lighting in our living room and playroom, as well as, install outside lighting. Mike did a great job on the carpentry work and oversaw the electrician work. He made sure that we were satisfied with the completed work. He provided reasonable pricing and we will definitely be hiring him again for future upgrades in our home.

Longfin is a gem. He came out on an extremely cold day and finished the project. My outdoor deer/doe christmas decor was on the ground as it was too windy and I hadn't staked it well. This gentleman staked it back to the ground. Secret santa!

Mark was highly recommended to us by friends who hired him to do some home repair projects, and were very satisfied with his work. Mark came to our home, thoroughly explained how he would repair our deck, he wrote us an estimate which was very reasonable, and we hired him. He showed up on time to do our repairs, and did a very professional job. My husband and I were very impressed with his work....our deck looks as good as brand new and you can't even tell which parts had to be repaired. Mark was very polite and very neat. We were very impressed and we have already hired him to do a few more repairs at our home.

Evan and his crew are outstanding. They do really great quality work, they keep everything clean and they are on point and on time. So many other contractors bounce between jobs. Chefalo Carpentry & Construction will come for an estimate, provide the written estimate, and then will put you on their schedule and will focus on your job and don't leave until the job is finished to your satisfaction. Highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
