Elena is an extremely knowledgeable and diligent botanist. She and her assistants turned over extremely overgrown garden into a peaceful haven in the course of a couple of days! In addition to her amazing work, Elena is also eager to teach homeowners how to care for their plants and trees, and even brought us some of her soil from Rhode Island to enhance the livelihood of our rose bushes. Elena also helped me to begin to decorate my front porch with potted plants which included meeting me at a nursery to choose the plant arrangements, pottery vases, and soil, and then she eturned to my home to assemble them. All of her work is done with great care and respect for the plants, and she charges a very reasonable rate (unlike many other landscapers.) Elena was a tremendous help and she has a true love of plants and gardening as well as a strong work ethic and a desire to make her clients happy! Thank you so much, Elena! We will definitely continue to use your services.

Job: Replace diseased pachysandra in small garden Mylan of Plant Design Therapy, responded a few minutes after I posted the job on thumtack. Throughout the job,I appreciated that she was very responsive to texts and phone calls, and willing to work with us on the overall budget. Mylan suggested a "cottage garden" to replace the portion of pachysandra that was diseased. This is something we had never considered, and as the design took place we were very pleased. We wanted something that would be easily maintained and would thrive in the sunny and shady areas of the garden. We worked interactively with Mylan on the web to choose color schemes and other aspects we might not have considered. Her crew seemed very capable and did a great job with planting. The biggest job turned out to be removing roots of dead pachysandra, which had been growing in that area for over 30 years. This took many many more hours than expected, so an extra day was required, and we were glad they were able to schedule more time on the fly. They also edged and mulched all beds in our yard, which gives an overall “upgrade” in appearance we hadn’t expected. We’re very excited about watching our cottage garden grow. I would highly recommend Plant Design Therapy, especially for someone interested in Mylan’s design skills and extensive gardening knowledge.

Last year I was trying to create a home garden without much knowledge on the subject other than some rough ideas on what I wanted the project to look like. I came to Dana on several occasions with an onslaught of questions and was impressed by her wealth of knowledge and willingness explain everything in great detail. With her input, I was able to make informed purchases and we created a better finished product than I had origionally envisioned. I was equally pleased that we stayed within my budget for the project as well. I would recommend her services to anyone. Thanks again!

Initially we hired Blessed Forever to do some landscaping and planting. We found that the owner is multi/talented and was able to create a stone front porch, garden walls, move trees, and create beautiful gardens. We are absolutely amazed by his work, and so are our neighbors. They have also hired him for major projects! Have no doubt that he can deliver what he promises.

Very happy with the work done by Jose and his crew. Needed spring cleanup done on the lawn and mulching of garden beds. Also had the lawn reseeded. He showed up when scheduled and completed the job efficiently for a reasonable price. Will certainly call for future projects!

Pond Installation & Garden Bed: "We recently had Denise and Joe of AJM, replace a backyard water feature with a new, expanded pond/waterfall feature. At first we weren't sure we wanted to take on the expense, but Denise and Joe presented us with a stunning design, as usual, one too good to pass up. And then, with a few minor adjustments, they worked with us to make the cost affordable and we gave them the green light to proceed with the project. In less than a week, they transformed a dirt pit into an elaborate backyard paradise. We have worked with them continuously for the past 3 years in transforming the rest of our outdoor space and once again, they brought the same great design sense, dedication to detail, and pride to this project. Whatever they do is a labor of love. They care deeply about making you happy and strive at all times to meet a high standard. Then they follow up regularly, long after the project is complete, to make sure that everything continues to go well. It's been a dedicated, caring partnership. We got very lucky when we found them and remain in very good hands." Mark Stamford, CT

About

I have been gardening since I was five, helping my mohter in her vegetable gardens. My parents eventually divorced and at age 12 I was planting and growing my own gardens. Every place I lived I improved the landscaping, it is just something I love to do. I became a Master Gardener to fine tune my knowledge and skills, and am an avid reader keeping up on the latest in Gardening. People started coming to see my vegetable gardens and wanted to walk through them, because I am a huge advocate of companion planting: planting vegetables, flowers and herbs in such a way as to attract beneficial insects and deter the bad ones... much prettier than simple rows of veggies. I plant with a focus on long term results and beauty for landscaping and perennial gardens; with the proper spacing in mind, which is important to keep your gardens healthier and less work in the long run, the opposite of most landscaping companies which cram as much into a space as possible with no thought to the future. Gardens need to be maintained in order to stay healthy and beautiful, and it can be done as Holistically, and Organically as possible with great results. If your goal is a sustainable garden, that is not a cookie cutter garden, and want to enjoy it for years to come, I would love to meet you and help to create a relaxing space you can enjoy for years to come.

About

My mission is to help you to be a better gardener by providing coaching; to make gardens more sustainable by using and promoting proven organic methods; and to increase bio-diversity by encouraging the use of native plants and the creation of plant communities that sustain wildlife. I specialize in perennial gardens. You can hire me to maintain and improve the garden you already have. I'm available for weekly visits (length of visits would depend on the size and condition of the property). As much as possible, I use hand tools: shovel, trowel, rake, broom, hand pruners, etc. Very occasionally I use battery-powered cordless tools. I don't mow and I don't blow in keeping with the concept of tender land care: using my hands to tend your garden without noise and pollution from combustion engines. Maintenance services provided are as follows: - Check for possible problems and make recommendations for necessary treatment - Note plants that need dividing, transplanting, or pruning and perform these activities with homeowner approval - Stake plants as necessary to maintain a tidy appearance, and train climbing plants - Deadhead annuals and perennials to encourage extended or continuous bloom - Recommend perennial and/or annual plants to fill gaps in the garden if any, with an emphasis on native plants, and with homeowner approval, and obtain plants and install - Weed and edge Coaching services are provided. As a coach, I will work alongside you in the garden, demonstrating techniques and answering your gardening questions. I can show you how to have a lush, beautiful garden without spending a lot of money on soil amendments, fertilizer and mulch. You may have much of what you need on your property already, in the form of last year's perennials, annuals, and fallen leaves. With our help, you will become a knowledgeable and more confident gardener. I am an alumna of the UConn Master Gardener program (2009). I am also an artist (oil painter) and have formerly practiced as a registered architect. I have been gardening in Connecticut for 25 years.

About

I do flawless gardens. I am expert in hand pruning, weeding, edging and mulching. I also do flower development, transplanting, new material addition and garden bed redevelopment.

I have ten years professional experience in garden design, installation, and maintenance in the Hudson Valley. That includes dozens of field projects, backed by extensive classroom and and field work at the New York Botanical Garden. I create designs from scratch, and rehabilitate existing gardens, too. I work closely with my clients, combining my creativity with your vision to come up with and install a garden you'll love.

About

I've been a gardener since I was little. I've experience in "soft-scapes"; that is creating landscape interest and curb appeal using plants and organic materials. I've encountered much success with clients largely due to my ability to listen to their needs, wants and desires. I'm willing to invest time to shop with my clients if so desired to ensure satisfaction with color, textures and sizing. I have a way of displaying and presenting depth through my familiarity with perennials. I can even maintain your current potted plants. My success requires your input, so I'll be happy to inform you of your chosen plant needs for survival. I'm full of ideas if you're at a loss.

About

I am an independent gardener. I am not a landscaper, but I will cross those lines if needed in between jobs. I am looking for anything.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.
