We bought a new TV and wanted to mount it on the wall in our apartment. Realized shortly after moving in that the wall was cement, and needed some extra help (didn't have the tools to drill through the cement and didn't want to fuss buying new stuff). After researching and fielding different offers, we eventually hired Lopez Home Improvement LLC. Thought this would be an easy job -- it wasn't. I've drilled through cement before, but this stuff was strong. Real strong. Overall, Walter came in prepared and professional. He worked non-stop and completed the job in an efficient manner. All I can say is I appreciate his patience throughout the time he was here -- it wasn't an easy job to say the least. But above all else, we couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he charged us an extremely favorable rate to complete this job? I would easily recommend. Worth every penny.

Harry did a terrific job in every respect — from installing blinds, a smoke detector, and a full length mirror, to hanging cabinets and various pieces of art (including one more than 7 feet wide, which he mounted on a plaster wall perfectly level), fixing an outdoor gate, and staining outdoor steps. All the work was done with meticulous care and concern to be meeting our needs. We will definitely have him back for other projects. It's a privilege to recommend him to others!

We recently hired Dino & Sons to paint several rooms in our home, a couple of which also required a bit of replastering due to holes in the wall from the previous owners. From the time we posted the project, Sonny was very quick to respond, prompt in arriving to give us an estimate and flexible (as we were a bit delayed in finalizing our color selections). Having met with 3 other painters, Sonny was the only one that took notes as we showed him the rooms we wanted painted. He also was the only one to leave a Benjamin Moore Color Deck to help us in selecting colors. We ultimately chose Dino & Sons due as a result of how responsive and professional Sonny was and are glad we did. Sonny and his crew member were very professional and efficient in their work. There were a few other minor things that Sonny noticed needed touching up and offered to do so at no additional charge. We have a few more projects we will need to complete in the coming months and will definitely reach out to Dino & Sons.

My fiancé and I hired Cook Contracting and Remodel to complete a project that was very important to us, the complete renovation of our spare bathroom and Den. This project was very important for us for 2 reasons: 1) This is our main entertaining space for company. As you can see from some of the before / after splits, this entire area was embarrassing to host our family and friends because it looked like Big Bird threw up all over the walls. Don’t even get us started on that disgusting carpet. 2) Before we discovered Thumbtack, we were actually ripped off by another “contractor” we found on Facebook for the same job. To be fair, he had reviews and seemed legitimate enough but we soon discovered he was a fraud, pressed charges, and thankfully recovered most of the money he stole from us. Anyway, because of this fact, we were completely scarred from having someone literally come into our home and steal from us, making it understandably hard for us to trust anyone again. Then we downloaded Thumbtack and met Teddy Cook. From the onset, it was very clear that Teddy was not only incredibly knowledgable about all aspects of construction, but also enthusiastic about the prospect of working for us. He told us on more than one occasion in the estimate process that he really wanted to do this project for us, which was refreshing because a lot of other contractors we looked at on Thumbtack couldn’t even be bothered to produce a quote after coming over for an estimate. Teddy’s passion got him the job, and we are in complete and total love with the results! It is worth mentioning that everything Teddy worked on for us was custom work. There was really nothing standard or cookie cutter about what we asked for; we are both very creative people and had a very specific vision for what we wanted the space to look like and Teddy’s creativity and skill was able to bring our vision to life! The work he completed for us as a part of this project included but was not limited to: - New Tile Floors Throughout (included leveling of all floors, as our our slab the old tile / carpet was on was COMPLETELY uneven) - Full Bathroom Gut - Brick Wall in Bathroom - Curb Shower with Rain Head, Niche, + Bench - All Tile Work - Heated Floors in Bathroom - Sliding Barn Door - 3 New Additional Interior Doors - New Exterior Door + Storm Door - Rehabilitation of Existing Den Walls (in VERY rough shape from previous homeowner garage conversion) - New Paint Throughout - Brick Wall in Den - Custom Bar Built from Scratch - Custom Header Beam - Rehabilitation of Existing Staircase - New Base, Crown, + Door / Window Moulding - Upgrade of Electric Service to 150 Amps Teddy performed all of this work either himself or with various assistants. None of this work got subbed out to any other companies which speaks to what a professional Teddy is. We were amazed at not only his ability to do so many different elements of construction work (plumbing, electrical, tile, sheetrock, carpentry, millwork, painting, masonry, etc.) but to literally be an expert in each and every area. This was such a nice departure from going the General Contractor route and having a parade of different trades tear the house apart for weeks on end, blaming the people who came yesterday for today’s problems. Besides his level of expert craftsmanship, one of the traits we liked most about Teddy was how great of a communicator he was. He was constantly in contact with us throughout the entire project and kept us in the loop every step of the way. Communication is a two-way street and we made a point to meet with him every morning to see what the day would bring. If we couldn’t be there to greet him first thing because of other obligations, he would always call or text us. But above all else, what we most appreciated about Teddy was how trustworthy he was. It isn’t easy hiring a contractor who will spend time in your home when you are not there (and remember the horror story we told earlier regarding the bogus contractor we first hired), but Teddy earned our trust by being polite, respectful, reliable, and a good communicator. We cannot possibly sing Teddy's praises loud enough or recommend him more highly, and hope the pictures of the work he completed for us says more than words ever could. Teddy, thank you!

PM Drywall in two words: Fantastic work! We are trying to sell our house and move south. We had a leaking roof with 4 areas with very large drywall repair needs.Pedro repaired these areas, and many other dings, furniture dents, cat scratches, etc. that we pointed out. He also repaired raised drywall seams and other problems we did not notice. The end results were smooth, perfect ceilings and walls! Professional work, pleasant gentleman, great cleanup, at a fair price. I would not hesitate, nor would I call for other estimates, to recommend PM Drywall. They also do interior and exterior painting, probably with the same quality.

We hired Mike to build a wall in our basement. The job was tricky because the basement has long hanging pipes. Mike was great- he navigated the pipes and gave us exactly what we wanted. His quote was fair and his work was excellent. He built the wall, did the drywall, and painted. He even added finishing touches that made the wall look great. Through every step of the process Mike was in communication with us. He's easy to work with, safe, and reliable. We hired him for additional jobs (waterproofing the basement, etc.) all of which came out great! I will be hiring him for all our jobs around the house going forward. He's a true professional and his craftsmanship is high quality too.

Hanging was okay for pictures and light pendant, it was clean and fast. But to put the tv cables inside the wall was not so good, it could have a better finish.

If you are looking to hire painters...hire these guys!!! Marcelo and his worker from BNG were awesome! The price was very fair and the work was amazing! We had a 16ft high wall painted as well as the stairs and living room and all the trim in mentioned areas. These guys were so fast and that included two coats on everything. Their work was top notch, they paid attention to every detail. I did not have to ask them to fix anything and the same cannot be said for experiences we have had with other painters. They worked fast but not rushed...they were just that good! They were also very neat! I highly recommend them and will be using the again in the near future. Infact, we asked them for a quote for another job while they were here!

Ben was very professional and completed the job on schedule. He did a great job repairing water stained ceilings and finishing to look like new. He also repaired issues with wall corners cracking, complete with matching paint to the rest of rooms exactly. I will hire him in the future for other jobs needed around the house.

Where to begin? We came home from vacation to find out we had some frozen pipes. The owner and his crew promptly got to work with state of the art infrared tools to locate our problem pipes. They were able to thaw the pipes, replaces broken fittings, and the sheetrock on the walls. Start to finish Joe and his crew went above and beyond our expectations and all we had to do was slap some paint on the walls. They even offered to take care of that, but we did not have the paint.its hard to believe there are still companies with that level of professionalism. We will defiantly keep them in mind for future projects, and would recommend them to anyone needing work done.

I loved his willingness to come the same night at 8PM to check out the work and give me an estimate. He was also quick to jump on the project that same night and get some work done. I found him to be professional and friendly. The work was adding a wall between two rooms and he got it done with great quality. Thanks.

So happy with the work of Eswin &JDA General Contracting did for us! The project was completed in one day- whitewash of a tall brick fireplace wall. Eswin promptly replied to my initial request, he came to our appointment on time, well prepared with the estimate + the time frame for the project. He made several very important and useful suggestions (color-wise! - not to use just stark white!) He protected the areas around, he used a scaffold not a ladder; and he left the place impeccably clean. The room has been transformed and updated from the 1980s to now! THANK YOU!

Jeffrey was amazing and incredibly knowledgeable, when it comes with his expertise. I needed to cover a big cutout hole on a wall and have it painted as well. He came to assess the hole and began to be very through with an informative explanation. That really makes me feel comfortable, knowing that somebody like Jeffrey knows what he’s doing. He offered to paint a entire room with my color choice of paint after patching it up the hole for a reasonable price. Overall, I couldn’t be any happier with his service and the results.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
