I hired Natwerks Catering to prepare and cook the food for my Christmas Eve party at my home. The food preparation was well thought out and executed to perfection. My guests went home happy and looking forward to my next event because they know I will be hiring Chef Nate and Natwerks Catering again.

I can not describe the quality and service of Sunflowers Catering and Event Planning. Chef Laura and her staff are very organized and personable. From the very first phone call to the last hour of my parents 70th wedding anniversary party the service was beyond our expectations. Sunflowers works with your budget and provides the 5 star service and quality at 3 star prices that they claim to provide. We will use them again no questions asked. Thank you for making my parents milestone anniversary a very memorable one.

We had positive experience with Gordon or While Wolf. H was very flexible with the menu we were looking to create. He cam to our house for a small private party for my wife's birthday in June 2018. The menu we put together was a combination of Mediterranean and French. All the food was amazing. There were points throughout the process where communication was inconsistent and it took a while to hear back. When planning for something like this it is important for me to make sure all ducks are in a row and when I didn't hear back for multiple days, it got me concerned. There were times when I was told I would hear back by a Friday and by the following Monday I still had not heard back. We had set a time of 8pm, which I confirmed multiple times; Chef Gordon was under the impression we wanted to start at 6pm; while this was not a huge issue, I did feel some level of guilt since he was at your house from 3pm-12am; if he had the time right he probably would have only been there from 5pm-12am. In the end, it all worked out quite well. The food was amazing, as I stated, and in addition to that there was a lot of it, so we were able to keep the leftovers which was great. Chef left us with the leftovers as well as some of the ingredients he used. At the end of the night after a long meal, there was still a lot to clean up and we were quite exhausted. We did not feel the kitchen was cleaned up to our expectation based on the money we spent. We still had to do a lot of cleaning that night and into the next morning. Our guests had a good time and enjoyed the meal thoroughly, as well as talking to Chef Gordon about his experience. I would recommend White Wolf and we would use him again.

The cooking class we asked Mitchell Goran to conduct was a birthday gift to our 10-year old granddaughter, Katherine. "Mitch"is clearly an experienced and competent chef. He knows what he is doing and does it well, answering any questions asked along the way. Ahead of time he asked the right questions about the planned cooking class, checked to verify the supplies that we already had and carefully purchased the others he needed. As the class progressed it became evident that Mitch is not only a fine chef; he is a very good teacher. He was patient and careful teaching Katherine basic skills: how to handle a knife and how to separate the white from the yolk of an egg. He used words to describe the cooking process that she could easily understand. He helped Katherine write down each step in the preparation so that she had a record in her own words. He gave Katherine ample time to practice her newly found skills, even to the point of extending his time with her beyond the contracted time. The smiles, the occasional laughter, and the good meal at the end were clear testimony of a class well conceived and well executed.

We were so happy to have chosen Chef Anne to cater our Mom's 90th Birthday Party. From my first conversation with her to follow up email she was helpful professional and provided first rate service. Chef Anne made recommendations as well as guided me thru selecting Glueten Free etc type dietary concerns. I felt like Ive known her for years as she is so easy to work with, now I have a friend in the catering business. We had many positive comments how delicious everything was and I would recommend her and will be happy to call her again.

FANTASTIC! I hired Cultivated Tastes to cater my birthday party for approximately 20 people at my house and both Chef Gerry and Kendall exceeded our expectations in every way! I started planning the event with Cultivated Tastes a few months prior to the event and they were very helpful with food suggestions and other ideas to make sure this party was going to be a success - and it was!! Chef Gerry and Kendall were very professional and friendly. The quality of food and service was definitely 5 STAR!! We decided on having passed hors d'oeuvres and stationed platters. The food was beyond delicious and all my guests and I raved about every dish!! I absolutely loved having Chef Gerry and Kendall cater my party and I will definitely be hiring them again. Thank you Cultivated Tastes!!!

We couldn't have asked for a better party--the bride to be was overwhelmed with the food and effort that Kim, our chef, provided. From start to finish Kim offered excellent menu suggestions, and planned to whole party for us. The appetizers, entree and desserts were par excellence!! The food presentation was beautiful. She even typed up the menu, which we placed at each setting. The appetizers were placed on platters with fresh flowers that matched the color of the bridal party. Our party of 24 had more than enough food, with each bite better the the last. We started off with a shrimp on a homemade wonton with green goddess dressing, Homemade hummus and guac with chips/crackers, then some meatball sliders ( the bride's fav!) and a beautiful crudite. The main course offered both chicken and steak Indonesian style with delicious sides. Kim even made a delicious carrot cake sundae for the bride to be, knowing that carrot cake was her favorite. The whole even was perfect and elegant from start to finish....we couldn't have asked for anything more. Chef Kim is wonderful!!! Thanks Kim for a fantastic night!!!

We contacted Chef Matt about 24h prior to the event. Not only that he accomodated our request last minute, and worked in the partial kitchen, he put the menu together that was beyond delicious!!!! My husband and I are World travelers and were privileged to be exposed to many different cousines throughout the World. But we both can say with full confidence, and without exaggerating that Chef Matt’s short ribs were the best we’ve ever had in our life!!! Food was delicious, our server George wonderful, kind, professional and Chef Matt was the kindest, most professional and humble Chef we’ve ever met. We were lucky to have him on our special day. We would absolutely recommend Plates for your next event. Oleg & Olivera

My name is Ms. Lola Nathan, a recently retired Public School Administrator. It gives me great pleasure to write this review for Gwen Robinson. I've known Gwen for over 30 years and our best times have been spent singing and cooking. She specializes in vegetarian, vegan, cooked, and raw foods. We have spent many hours preparing dishes like vegan potato salad, whole wheat dinner rolls, vegetarian meat loaf, roasted veggies, vegan eggplant parmigiana, raw seasoned kale, baked sweet potatoes, vegan burgers, all types of potatoes, every kind of vegetable, fruit, cake, apple crisp and so much more. Our latest collaboration was vegan lentil loaf in which we added organic shredded carrots, organic chopped celery, organic chopped onions, ground flax seed, nutritional yeast, liquid smoke and some seasonings to our organic lentils. It was so delicious that the guests I invited for dinner wanted to take slices of the lentil loaf home for the next day. Juicing is an integral part of our health practices. One of our most healthful combinations is kale, spinach, celery, carrots, and a touch of ginger, all organic! We know it's best to juice our vegetables and eat our fruit. Juiced veggies go straight to our cells giving strength and vitality to our whole body. Fruit we eat raw because this way cleanse our digestive system. Gwen prepares excellent fruit platters! Gwen is busy but she makes time for people like me who care about their health and want great tasting food. It doesn't take us long to do anything. I get all the ingredients, she does the preparing with me. Sometimes I just have her prepare meals for me for special occasions! She gets rave reviews, is easy to work with and is patient with all whom she is instructing. Gwen has taught many of my associates and friends how to make different tasty entrées and treats. She has no problem sharing recipes and keeps some with her. Young and old alike love whatever she prepares. She makes her own dough, from scratch, for fried dough & pizzas! Wonderful!! She is one of the best vegetarian Chef's I know. Always rave reviews! Always!! We know her as Ms. G, the personal vegan chef. Truly, Ms. Lola Nathan

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
