Brandon showed up on time, was friendly and professional, and got right to work replacing our kitchen faucet. He was happy to answer questions and explain the process. I would not hesitate to contact him again for any other home repair.

Walt and his guys installed a dishwasher and garbage disposal in our tiny kitchen where there had never been ones before. They did everything--cut out a space in the existing cabinet for the dishwasher, wired everything back to the electrical panel, did the plumbing, etc, and fixed a recently-discovered leak in our sink drain while they were at it! They were totally professional, did great work, and were super flexible as we were trying to get the work done as close to our move-in date as possible!

Steve was super-efficient with most of the tasks he came to do, e.g. fixing a desk lamp, reinstalling a handle on a bathroom cabinet, affix hooks for curtain tiebacks, etc. He charges a fixed amount per hour, so his ability to work rapidly and do the job well was very welcome. On the last task--fixing a (relatively new) salt-grinder the handle of which had refused to grind/turn--things proved harder than both he and I thought. It took a long time and yet it remained unfixed after all was said and done. It may have been better to just let it go much earlier (thus saving me some money) but I guess the hope was that he would be able to fix it at the end of the day. But generally I am satisfied with how nearly all of the the handyman tasks went. One PS note: I had no problems with the issue many mentioned, re him not showing up etc. However, I did raise this point I saw in other reviews with him upfront, and he explained that he doesn't set appointments to show up without speaking to the client. Easy enough, I spoke with him and all went well on this front.

Renaissance Restoration is an incredible company. They do business with integrity, and customer satisfaction as their top priorities. I hired them to do a major kitchen renovation project for my home and I couldn't be happier with the result and the price. From their employees to the owner Antonio Sanchez, they provide a service that is far superior to other renovation companies. I highly recommend Antonio for any project. Antonio has now done a kitchen, a bathroom and a basement for friends that I have referred. His design ideas are fresh and always kept within the ideas and budget of the client. He listened carefully to what I wanted and provided helpful comments and advice. The project moved very smoothly and everything happened just as he said it would. I have been so impressed by their work. They were very friendly, professional and always on time. I noticed significant progress every day, and they did a great job of cleaning up before heading home for the day. They were very responsive to all of the questions, comments and concerns that I had during the entire process. They put the client first, and will do whatever necessary to make your project a reality and to meet your expectations. Antonio provided me with a great lead time and a great price. My kitchen was completed in a week. I'm not only happy that my kitchen looks beautiful, but also that he met the deadline. Antonio was very helpful, and always seemed to be excited about the project, which definitely gave me a feeling that I was in good hands. He definitely went above and beyond. I have no reservations about recommending him to someone looking for a "one stop" restoration company. Renaissance Restoration was nothing but the ultimate example of professionalism, expertise, and customer service during the entire process.

Henry did a fantastic job repairing a kitchen cabinet whose side was separating from the back and thus starting to come down from the wall. After fixing that though, he noticed that several others were not as secure as they should be and tightened up the remaining ones. He responded to my request on Thumbtack quickly, arrived on time, cleaned up thoroughly, and charged a very fair price. Would definitely hire him again.

Traylor Design and Construction did a very nice job on my kitchen and bathroom ventilation projects. Both projects were relatively small but complicated jobs that involved a lot of different skills. Andre and his crew were easy to deal with and the price was very reasonable. I am very happy with the results and would recommend Traylor to others.

Months ago, I looked for someone to do a small painting project on Thumbtack. And I ended up with a brand new home. Christian, Jessica, Hector and the rest of the team at 5th Gen Group honestly do miracles. We own a 100+ year old row home in Washington DC and we've had problems ever since we moved in five years ago. After dealing with four different contractors that left me unsatisfied, I tried Thumbtack (at that time, new in the DC area). Christian came out to do an estimate and I was impressed by him from the get go - as a woman, I hate when contractors act like I'm stupid or uninformed. Christian never did that, and he answered all my questions respectfully and thoroughly and would defer to my wishes. We initially contracted for a gut remodel of our ancient kitchen and leaking bathroom. Christian's professional opinion was heavily appreciated as well as his vision - he instantly "got" the feel of a space and spent a lot of time listening to not only what we wanted, but how we would use the space and what we planned for the house in the future. Of course, the best laid plans always go awry - we knew our house had a few "handyman specials" but once Christian opened up the floor in the kitchen, we realized we were really in for it. Down there was a hidden mess of rotting wires, missing piping, garbage from the last renovations, and rotted-out beams. Overnight, our budget doubled. I personally wanted to die. But Christian calmly lead us through the process, helped us try to salvage our murdered budget, and focused on explaining the trade-off in home values. We ended up with an additional half bath downstairs (because really, what was another 5K at that point?), brand new kitchen (with a small bar!) a brand new stairwell and relocated laundry room, and a brand new bathroom with a shower (after 5 years of an ancient leaking cast iron tub). Christian isn't completely perfect - he's totally a perfectionist, and if you are one too, be prepared for some long conversations. There is an epic texting exchange over the bathroom tile that I may print out just to see how long it really was. But that's about the only thing. Also, for the other ladies on here- I always hate opening my home to someone because I have had bad experiences with contractors who were, at best, creepy. Christian and Hector were completely professional, and they really went the extra mile to make sure I always knew who would be in the house, when they would arrive, and how to reach both of them. Christian also has a lot of loyalty and integrity toward his clients - he is always fair, both in pricing and in the treatment of your home. He broke a small appliance - the only reason I knew was because he called me when he was purchasing an (upgraded) replacement on his own dime. All renovations are hard projects, long projects, and frequently frustrating. There was definitely a day when I wanted to kill Christian for sending me out to two different quarries in far out Virginia right around rush around. But when I stepped into my home for the first time, I couldn't stop smiling. And when we finally scrape together the budget for a third floor extension, I know exactly who I am calling.

My husband and I hired Good Painter to refinish our kitchen cabinets. Andrey and his team did an excellent job and I am extremely happy with the results. Even though the previous home owners did not maintain the cabinets well (very sticky and dirty from grease), Good Painter managed to get it all off. Whenever I needed to reach Andrey, I was able to do so via text, e-mail, or phone and he was always able to take our requests. If you value quality work you should give Good Painter a try.

Al Barney is my hero. He has been a part of our lives for 15 years here in Leesburg. He is my "GO TO GUY". I come up with an idea and I call Al. He makes it happen. In my last home he created an amazing outdoor space with a screened in porch and deck, flowing to an amazing patio. Years later he created a front porch that made my house unique to others in the neighborhood. Now, I have an older home that needed updating. He gave me an amazing kitchen with an island and cabinets that are breathtaking. Please come see my kitchen. I am proud to say that Al Barney is my friend, my designer, my builder and my mentor. Next stop....my master bathroom.

I had a custom bar made for me by Leopard Designs. I had given the measurements of what would fit in my place and a general idea of what I wanted, with a couple sample pictures. I didn't know exactly what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. The work was above expectations and to be honest above what I thought I would get for my money. The matting, the beveled edges and wire meshing on the side of the hanging wine rack were all amazing. I did not realize till a few days after that the lights that illuminated the wine glass rack and mirror was an adjustable dimmer which really added a nice touch. The only cons I have is that I wasn’t specific when asking about the lighting in the cabinet area. The lights were motion active so whenever I opened the door the light would turn on, which was great. The problem is that it eventually burned out and had trouble finding the replacement. That issue was resolved fairly quickly when I simply reached out to Leopard Design and asked about the light. Though I wish the completion time could be quicker all together I am very pleased with the results and product.

Alex and company did a PHENOMENAL job installing my backsplash & kitchen floor tiles! They not only did beautiful work, they were quick (completed the job in 2 days inclusive with tile/backlash demolition), affordable & reliable. They also never missed an appointment or a follow up call; which can be hard to find in contractors today. I’m truly happy with my updated kitchen and am recommending them to family & friends. Awesome job! A+

Ed was great at communicating during the process. Install went super quick! Other companies install a thin sheet of plywood on the cabinet before installing the granite, they did not. Also, didn't attach the dishwasher to anything so it tips until we get that attached.

I have worked with Winthorpe Design and Build on 2 large renovations on my home. The first was a total remodel of our outdated kitchen. A few months later we had them finish our basement into an exercise room and media room. Dave Szeliga and his men arrived daily at the time agreed upon and were easy to have around. They communicated daily on their plans and progress. During the kitchen remodel, they setup a make shift kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and a sink to make the inconvenience more bearable. The kitchen renovation finished on time and on budget. I am very pleased with my new gourmet kitchen. The basement reno was painless and also was finished on time. Their attention to quality and detail was impeccable. I look forward to doing future business with Winthorpe Design and Build in the future.

Dennis was amazing! I would most definitely recommend him. He was very professional, responsive, flexible and his prices are reasonable. I hired Dennis because I needed my microwave installed over my stove, however we ran into a dilemma because my cabinets were too short. Dennis gave me several options on how to handle the problem, but he suggested we do the most cost effective one which was him to move my cabinets up. So he moved all my cabinets up 4 inches so my microwave could fit over the stove. I also had a broken kitchen drawer which he repaired and my dishwasher free of charge. I'm keeping his number stored because I'm sure I will need his services in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
