She was amazing ! It was our first pet grooming experience and making it mobile was also a first for us . My 7 month old kitten enjoyed his grooming session . Even when he got a little scared or distracted she did an excellent job at reassuring him and keeping him calm . His cut turned out very cute . We actually had to get this service due to him getting fleas and being uneducated in flea treatment I thought cutting him would get the fleas out . Boy was I wrong ! She evened out his fur and it turned out to be so adorable . I actually just may keep him shaved !

Stef does it again! We learned a few years back that our cat does not do "boarding" well. So for a trip that took us out of town for one week we hired Stef again. Before she took care of two animals (dog and cat...see a previous review). This time it was just the feline. Not only did Stef do what we needed (come in twice per day to feed our pet; change his sand; play with him) but she also checked our mailbox and removed packages from the front porch. One thing I learned about our cat is that he eats less when people are not around. Stef was good about reaching out to me to check on how little our pet was consuming, just to give us an update. When he had a "hairball incident" she cleaned it up, and reported it to me. Her reports were not cumbersome to receive while on vacation as they were few, and only when there was a true concern. I am delighted to have someone so trustworthy coming to care for the cat! I heartily recommend Stef's Pet Services!

I forgot the challenges of a new puppy, since my older guy is 13. The beginning was a tough adjustment and our family needed help fast. After calling referrals from my sphere, I was still at a dead-end and a week later. I tried Thumbtack and Natasha was nearly instant in her response-- even quicker to meet us and assess the situation in comparison to the other respondents. After meeting Natasha I knew I didn't need to look further and she would be the perfect fit! Although she walked our guy for a week she carefully introduced him to Andre who would take over our daily walks. Natasha wasn't going to get off that easy though. We had a trip come up and our pup needed a sitter. Unfortunately, he was still due a set of shots, so interactions with other dogs had to be limited. Of course, Natasha came to the rescue. With daily photos, continued walks and lots of love, our little guy couldn't have been happier. Now that we're back to just the walks, Andre is just as great as Natasha. He's kind, gentle, and you can tell, really cares for the dogs on his route. I couldn't have asked for a better compliment to Natasha. After every walk we get a report of their route, dog's behavior and a few photos. If you're looking for a 5-star full-service pet company (because they do so much more than walking dogs), please reach out to Walk with Renzo and Ruby Inc. They're the best!

Katie recently groomed our very timid Sheltie and did an amazing job. Her mobile service provided a calm atmosphere that we needed for our dog. Our dog is a rescue and has a lot of anxiety, so traditional pet spas with a lot of other animals are often traumatic for her.

Patty is a true professional. She arranged to meet our kitties ahead of time, went over all the details with us, and made us feel very comfortable about leaving our cats with her. She gave us updates each day and had us check back with her when we got home. I felt like my "family" was in good hands while we were away!

Angie had helped me walk my dog Rocky for about a year when I lived in Falls Church. Having a 14 year old shih-tzu, I was grateful to have a reliable and caring and dog walker. Angie was always flexible and went above and beyond to try to accommodate my (sometimes hectic) schedule or when I had to leave town. Rocky was in great hands, she gave him extra TLC when his paw was healing from an infection and she was very perceptive and will let you know if Rocky didn't seem himself. Very professional and highly recommend her for any of your pet care needs.

How do we love Melina? Let us count the ways! I don't often write long reviews like this, but she is worth it and we think every family with pets should have someone like Melina. First of all - we want the world to know about her! She truly cares about our pets, booking her is super convenient, and her service goes beyond pet care. She looks out for our house and plants, loads the sheets in the washer when she leaves, and manages the trash bins if we're away on trash pick-up days. The last time she was here, she took the kitchen trash out for us. We have a dog door and fenced yard, and she even picked up after the dogs the last time she was here (totally not a requirement for us!). She doesn't complain if our cat has an accident, and she's never charged us more for the little extras. We have 2 large dogs and a cat, and she always asks questions if she notices something is amiss. My husband and I tend to be last minute planners (we do the best we can, and I don't recommend it!), but have never once had an issue booking Melina when we're in a bind - that's because even when she's got a full schedule, she does what she can to work around her other commitments to fit us in. We've actually only met her in person one time for the initial meeting a couple of years ago. She makes it super easy, by being extremely responsive and using common and current technology - text message, email, Thumbtack, spreadsheets, and Venmo. She doesn't mind when I send long email updates or send a spreadsheet if we need to coordinate due to one or two-week long trips. She always sends an update and photos of the pets every time she arrives and leaves. Finally, she didn't originally have a frequency discount, but when we asked about it, she created one for us. Melina is a rockstar and comes highly recommended from a grateful pet family! Thank you so much, Melina!

Pet Friend LLC is my go to for pet sitting! Veronica is so great with my cat, Elf. She takes excellent care of him, and I know I don’t have to worry about him at all while I’m away!! On my last trip, she also cared for my flowers, which were thriving when I got home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

  • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
  • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
  • Wash and dry: $60
  • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
