Tony is extremely honest and I am glad, we choose to work with him. He fixed the broken air conditioner in few minutes of his arrival and also suggested upcoming maintenance and the timeline around it. He would be our go to person for any hvac or plumbing issues in our home. It very rare to find honest person these days and we enjoyed hearing his back story. Please hire him in case of any need. I would vouch for him any time.

We have had issues with our central air for the past few years. This is the first company that was able to properly diagnose and fix the problem. They were professional and friendly. I will be using this company for all of my heating and air conditioning needs from now on.

Advanced Heating and Air is awesome! I sent a request for help Tuesday night, and within minutes they responded saying they could come out in the morning first thing. They not only showed up on time - but early - and got our air conditioner running. I will defitinately be using them again and you should too! Thank you again!

Subzero was hired to replace the blower and condenser unit of my high efficiency air conditioning system after 4 previous contractors I had look at the system became unresponsive. They were always punctual, communicative, and professional. I only wish I had hired them sooner.

Frank from Pure Air responded next-day and gave us excellent and thorough service. We're new homeowners so we didn't know what to expect when our AC blew warm air. The prices were extremely fair (we comparison shopped online just in case and his pricing was spot-on) and he was very transparent about the work he was doing and why. He was also very professional and didn't pressure us. We will definitely be contacting Pure Air for our HVAC needs in the future.

Connecting with Sean and having him do a service call was a wonderful decision. I made contact around noon and he was at my house on the same day at 5:30pm. My air conditioner was fixed by 6:00PM!! He was there on time, worked quickly and then gave me some free advice on how to make the upstairs of my house cooler. Outstanding experience. I will never use anyone other than Home HVAC Services for all of my heating and cooling needs.

My 2.5 story house dates from 1920 or so and has steam heat with radiators. The lack of existing duct work presented a real challenge for Hughes Mechanical, but they totally rose to the occasion. My initial consultant, Brad, did not appear fazed by the job at all and immediately suggested a high-velocity system for the top two floors, a conventional system for the first floor, and a mini-split for the one room off the back of the house built on a cement slab and thus unreachable by the other two systems. The crew that came in, Billy, Eddie, Matt, Brian and others, was totally professional, did exactly what they said they would do, cleaned up after themselves, accommodated my schedule, and were a pleasure to have around for a couple of weeks. This was the only company from which I obtained an estimate that suggested anything other than a conventional system, which would have involved boxing in ducts all over the place. There is only one small place where Hughes was forced to put a duct outside the walls. As a bonus, Hughes gave me two new thermostats to control both the heat and air. I am super pleased with my air conditioning job!

Jason of JC Mechanical did a nice job explaining the process of the heat pump vs. air conditioner. I was not 100% sure of which unit I wanted in my home. He explained in detail the different options for my particular home. I thought I did enough research to make my own decision. Jason explained additional pros and cons on my choices. I went with a heat pump to compliment my propane furnace. My home is super efficient now for my family to enjoy and stick to budget.

We had a leak in a copper pipe in our baseboard heating - but it happened on New Years Eve. We called the big names that advertise 24/7 emergency service, Horizon and Roto-Rooter, and neither had anyone to send. So those ads are false. Desparate as we were, we stumbled across Thumbtack, posted our problem, and within minutes received a reply from Phil. He offered to come that night to at least turn off the water and return to fix in the morning. This despite his living 30 minutes from us. We decided to wait (we needed to keep the heat on) and stayed up all night dumping water. Next day, Phil showed up on time, saw the problem and gave us a fixed price for the job before starting. We thought the price was reasonable (because we've used many plumbers before for other leaks) and accepted. Phil did a fantastic job. He was probably at our house for 5 hours. He didn't leave until everything was just so - purging air from our lines so the heat would work better. I can't say enough good things - he was a life saver. I doubt we would have found anyone to come New Year's Day, and if we did, we would have been charged through the roof. Thanks Phil - Happy New Year! Best of Luck.

Kevin was absolutely terrific; he really knows his stuff, will happily show/explain things to you that may or may not be problematic, and offered an excellent price on replacing the ductwork in my home after it had been stolen prior to sale. My house is now warm and toasty, the work itself was impeccable, and Kevin was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Highly recommended!

We had a new air conditioner unit and furnace installed by Matt and he was GREAT! He was meticulous, provided a high qualiity installation and cut no corners. Matt even stayed late to get the job done in one day. His pricing was very competitive. We will definitely recommend him to family and friends, and continue to use him for maintenance.

I have nothing but good things to say about this company - they were efficient, prompt, professional and did the job right the first time. I have had many experiences with oil heat repair companies who will not service you if you do not have a maintenance plan (which generally works out to be a cleaning plus their visit fee), I appreciated that they didn't make me feel like a second rate customer and they came out promptly on the same day I called. They found my problem to be some type of circuit issue and so I had them clean the system and repair - which they could not complete on the same day - so they returned on the second day to finish and to my surprise - I did not get charged for their return. They have won my recommendation, I felt they were fair in their pricing, their techs were very kind and professional and I haven't had a problem since. Good Work Aire Serv!

We've had our air conditioner serviced in the past 20+ years and no one ever fixed the problem we complained about. That is the vent not cooling our bedroom for my husband's COPD problem. Chesapeake Heating & Cooling solved the problem immediately and will surely call them for any future service calls. He was professional, polite and knew what he was doing compared to all the others we had in the past. Thanks and now my husband can sleep better due to the solved problem. Mrs. Myers

I own an 1860 farm house with hot water radiator heat and no ductwork for central air. After interviewing and getting bids by 3 other air conditioning contractors, I called Universal Air LLC in Morgantown, PA. Bill Leone spent 2 hours with me explaining in detail everything the project would entail. He also offered what I felt was a very competitive price for a 16 seer Trane air conditioner which included the air handler, and installation of all duct work. The work crew did a great job, made every effort to be neat and cleaned up before leaving at the end of each day. Took about 6 days to complete. Very satisfied with their work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
