Hog Day Afternoon BBQ (HDA) has catered for me 3x. Two times for an office picnic that she has brought everything to a park, set up and had ready on time. Enough food even for leftovers. Then once I had an appetizer party at work. Everbody was happy with what she bought and again enough for everyone. Food has always been good and plenty of it. HDA goes out of their way to make sure everything goes well and is happy.

Anton was so wonderful to us during the whole process. From the first phone call, picking our buffett menu and pricing. We had a set per person price and he quoted us under it. We had impeccable service at our wedding reception. His staff treated my husband an I like a king and queen. Now to the food. The best I can come up with is amazingly awesome. Everything was way beyond my expectations. Every guest personally came to us remarking how superb the food was. I highly recommend Feast Caterers for any event you may need a caterer for. I look forward to planning another event with Chef Anton.

We hired Chef Myles and his Chefs 2Go for our company picnic; and it was a great success. He was available for my last minutes questions and requests, and he showed up on time and was ready to cook. Every one enjoyed the flavor of the food and the courteous service. I'd recommend Chef Myles and his Chefs 2 Go to anyone, and I will keep him in mind for our next catering events. Thank you Chef Myles!

Allison's pulled pork, cornbread, potato salad and barbecue chicken was absolutely delicious and perfect for our backyard picnic! She prepared our whole meal with careful consideration for a severe peanut/treenut allergy so that I had no worries or concerns at all. We'll call on Allison again.

Our retiree picnic was well served by DuJour Catering. The picnic lunch arrived on time, was plentiful and was appetizing. The cost for the meal was reasonable. The Hecker's were helpful with serving the meal and with clean-up. Our group would highly recommend DuJour Catering.

We really liked S&B's set up at our wedding to make it a beautiful reception! The staff were friendly and very professional. Sodiah was especially flexible with the plans and easy to work with which helped to make the day go perfectly. The food was also great! We are thankful that they were our caterers and would recommend them to others.

Jerry's Kitchen just catered my son's graduation party and everything was fabulous! The crispy chicken sandwiches where huge and the cheesesteaks where tender and flavorful. The staff was super friendly and full of upbeat energy. My son's friends really got a kick out of the truck serving food in our driveway. Scott the owner made everything so easy for us.

Tanya just catered a Barbeque coed baby shower for my son and daughter inlay. The menu she presented was wonderful and the food was extremely good. Everyone commented on the food and went back for seconds and thirds. Her staff was great and the cleanup afterwards was great. I would define Telly use her again and many of the guests were requesting her name afterwards no asking how I found her

Prompt and courteous responses from the staff. Very responsive to needs. Servers were not as experienced as those from other caterers I've used, but their enthusiasm helped cover the inexperience.

We hired beeandjay’s catering for our wedding and I must say we were very pleased with how professional they were. We were also very grateful that they allowed us to have a hand in our menu choice. All the other catering companies we called had menu choices for us to pick from and it was things I nor my husband ate. Beeandjay’s catering was understanding of any changes that we made. The day of the wedding they arrived early to make sure everything was running smoothly. I highly recommend beeandjay’s catering for your next event.

Chaad and his team are truly amazing. Recently, I had a hip hop 80’s party, and each time I begin to feel stressed, Chaad and his team jumped in to make sure everything went smoothly as planned. Amongst all of the catering companies I’ve contacted, Ster Catering was the only one who provided samples of the foods I wanted served at my party. This is a huge plus and I wish other catering companies offered this option. On the day of my event, Chaad and his team arrived early. They assisted with decorating (which they did not have to do). They also provided great food and drinks which everyone loved. I highly recommend Ster Catering and I would definitely hire Chaad and his team for another event.

The whole experience was great. Latonya worked around my schedule and was answering my emails even at 11pm at night. I think the food presentation was outstanding and everything came out great and tasty! The guests were satisfied and I was as well. Only thing I can say was that the chicken tenders were a little dry but that's due to transferring and holding. Other then that, I will be very glad to have her cater my events again. :)

I want to start off by saying thank you to the chef and his wonderful team for everything they prepared for me and my husbands housewarming party! The chef was very reasonable with pricing and when it came to service him and his team went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for our night. The food was out of this world our guest couldn’t stop talking about how amazing and delicious everything was. The hit of the night was the BLT sandwiches with their special sauce and the spicy deviled eggs. The Chef was very attentive and made sure he was able to give us everything we wanted the way we wanted it. How many people can Honestly say their caterer answered their call at 11pm?? I mean he really made sure he was available 24/7 ! We were able to actually relax and enjoy our party instead of worrying about guest and food and etc. The feeling was absolutely indescribable. The chefs passion and drive was visible and made our night much more perfect! I look forward to hiring him and his team for future events!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
