I would like to amend my first evaluation of this organization. I found the men to be most professional. They worked very hard. My criticism was that they showed up on the moving day unprepared for the move and did not move us until the next day. Luckily, we had that flexibility or we would have had to take a chance with them possibly damaging our belongings. They were uncomfortable moving us without the proper pads, wrapping etc. The men said they were not told what kind of move it was going to be. I'm not sure what that means exactly but they did come back the next day. They were late but they worked until at least 10 pm. The company did give us a veterans discount and a little extra for our being senior citizens. They were very reasonable with their pricing. One of the things you are suppose to look for besides their having the proper license (which they did) is their name on the truck. When I looked them up, I believe I saw a truck with their name on it but they pulled up with a Budget truck. When I questioned that, I was told they have an agreement with Budget to use their trucks. I felt a bit duped by that but what are you going to do the last minute. As it turned out, they did a fine job with our move.

Alert: I almost never do reviews and it is because they tend to run very long - you have been warned! I found On-Demand Moving (ODM) through Thumbtack. I had to find a mover for my college student in Philadelphia. She and her new roommate were moving from two furnished apartments to another one within a mile (mostly boxes). Did I mention that I live in Houston? I needed to find a reliable, reasonably priced mover that would do what I was too far away help do. Lanre responded quickly and was very good with follow-up communication – answering phone calls and emails quickly. I chose ODM, who was not my cheapest quote, because Lanre could explain that more movers (3 instead of 2) were needed due to parking regulations in Philadelphia and what the cost of parking tickets were ($120!). The reviews I read also noted the care this company took with clients belongings with some even complaining about the move taking longer because of it. I would rather pay a bit more up front than deal with damaged walls and belongings afterwards – insurance claims and loss of deposits. Saving money and hassle in the long run are well worth the slightly higher cost of hiring a professional company to me. Once I got a quote and signed the contact I had to hand off the dealings to my daughter and hope for the best. She was concerned because she had a narrow window due to the assigned times from the apartment complex, had no car of her own, very limited help from friends/family and had never dealt with movers before. My daughter was fairly stressed about the move the night before because she had poor choices if ODM did not show up. She had also injured her foot so was less able to move herself – adding to her stress level. On-Demand Moving showed up in the window promised. Lanre brought 3 movers and was there to supervise the move. This greatly eased my daughter’s stress. They took everything and then some, including some items we thought my daughter would have to take herself for safety reasons. There was no damage. They ended up taking longer than the original estimate but this was due to: • The care they took with all the belongings • The two apartment pick-up required moving the truck. • The lack of cooperation of the complex with respect to access within the building. • Poor parking options due to location of the pick-up apartment and the especially the construction still underway at the drop off location requiring a longer trip from truck to door than any of us expected. In the end On-Demand Moving showed up on time and moved everything without damage. They took longer than expected but for several reasons beyond their control and that we were unable to give information about in the initial quote. They treated my daughter with respect and made a stressful day turn out wonderfully. I agree that you get what you pay for and ODM charged a reasonable price for great service. We felt that ODM has a do it right the first time attitude. I would use them again without reservation.

Promised to show up at 6pm sharp. They showed up at 5:50pm sharp, I can really appreciate people who promise to show up at a certain time then show up a little earlier. I have never moved on my own before with so much stuff so when I stumbled on Thumbtack, it was a great way to find movers who could accomadate my needs. Cruz was the first one to respond to me probably around 45 seconds after I submitted my inquiry, no pressure, a lot of info, a perfect 100% rating thus far. Everytime I messaged Cruz a question, it was a less than 10 minutes to respond. I really appreciate that, all our discussions was full of politeness and respect. When they showed up, Cruz and Keith didn't hesitate to introduce themselves and ask what they could help with and what I needed to move. They offered a lot of good suggestions on what to move first and how. They professionally and quickly took apart my big furnitures and put it together again quickly and easily. I am extremely impressed with their hard work and experience in moving. I felt so bad because the unit I was moving out of and the new one I was moving into had weird turns for the hallways and staircases, yet they completed the move as quickly as possible with zero complaints and smiles on their faces. In terms of their prices, I saw many other people with $105-$150 an hour but I never would have guessed my move would take around 7 hours, so for the price Cruz charges it's MORE than worth it. I would recommend Cruz Moves 110% if you want professional, respectful, prompt, and hardworking movers for all your needs.

Dave and his colleague were great to work with for my move! I would definitely recommend them. Overall, they were very friendly, professional, punctual, and just nice to work with. We were moving to a new apartment in the same building, and had more furniture than a typical one-bedroom apartment. They were able to quickly move our stuff and even took consideration to where things should go, and helped us put furniture in the correct place. They were very helpful in just getting things done, and done well, without needing more than an overall plan of what needed to happen. This was very comforting and appreciated!

I was looking to have movers help me move in such a short notice (less than 24hrs). Ace kindly helped me with no rush charge or other contingency fees. We set the time to meet for the next morning at 9am. Two outstanding gentleman met me at my storage unit and begin working immediately (they were super quick). I was moving my one bedroom apartment and they were able to get everything into the truck within less than an hour! They also were able to help me move everything into my house quickly. They handle my items with care and treated them like they were their own. Needless to say, I would recommend Ace Movers to anyone looking for a quick, professional, and punctual job! Jameson Moving moved my daughter from our home in NJ into an apartment in Philadelphia on Saturday, 8/5/17. They arrived right on time and had everything in the truck very quickly. My daughter moved to the third floor of an old brownstone and the steps leading up to her room are very narrow. This made moving some of the larger pieces difficult, but Jameson Moving got all the pieces up the very small stairway. We were a little hesitant choosing Jameson Moving since they are not a well-known company and fairly new. We are very happy that we did choose them and have no hesitation recommending them to any one needing a moving service.

I can not recommend First Class Moving enough! We had a different moving company no show for our house move even though we had been booked on this date for over a month. We called First Class Moving and they immediately sprung into action. Despite it being their 3rd job of the day, they started moving our house at 4:30 in the afternoon. They worked clean and extremely fast. We were completely moved into our new house by 8 PM that night. I literally don't know what I would have done without these guys. Frank and Dom were nice, personable and honest. I would give them more than 5 stars if it were possible. They ended up being less expensive and better people to work with. USE THESE GUYS! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
