Solution came in with great service for a competitive price. They worked around the layout of my old house; installed the heater and a/c coils. The team they sent was professional and got the job done. i will use again.

My air conditioner condenser line got completely clogged due to the age of the evaporator coils causing so much gunk to build up due to rust. I had to shut off the air overnight in the extreme heat. With all the windows open it was 87 deg F in the house. I was scrambling the stores late at night in search of portable air conditioners with no luck being that it’s at the end of the summer season. In desperation, sitting half asleep and exhausted in my air conditioned car at the Home Depot parking lot, I contacted Advanced Heating and Air through thumbtack at 10 PM and to my surprise and delight they got right back to me with an immediate appointment at 10 AM the following morning. Sam came out to look at the unit and cleaned it up so at least we would have air conditioning for the next nights. Today he came out and replaced the evaporator coil unit and added a booster compressor outside because, I guess, of undue stress on the existing compressor. He said that it wasn’t responding correctly and kicking on as it should. Sam did an excellent job replacing everything. He was very professional and personable. The price was reasonable and my problem was solved and the AC works a little better now. The furnace and blower are also very old and if that goes this winter then I will be sure to hire Sam again. Thank you so much for you time, patience and thoroughness in getting the job done. A+++++++++++++

I needed a water heater replacement and called Benny at Subzero because of his positive reviews. He completed the work yesterday and I would recommend Benny to my family and friends who have plumbing needs. He always responded to my calls in a timely manner and was flexible in scheduling my water heater replacement. Benny and his son did a great job with the removal of my old water heater and installation of the new one. They worked efficiently and carefully in the small closet space that houses the water heater. I couldn't give them a higher recommendation! By the way, Benny's price was the lowest of the three estimates that I solicited so I know I also got a great value using him and his son.

Ryan Wolfe responded quickly to my request. He came to my house and fixed the problem by replacing the outside water faucet so that I could use it for watering my plants on the front lawn. (The faucet had not survived the winter well and was inoperable). He bought a new frost-free faucet and installed it (after removing the old faucet that was not working). I would recommend Wolfe to anyone who has a need for a plumber and is in need of a fast response.

Requested estimate for Flue valve and Chimney cap repair/install. Ended up need a new liner and some cement work as well. Mike was professional, and described the issues (and provided pictures) of what need to be replaced and why it needed to be replaced. The flue didn't need to be repaired as it was just off track, and Mike was able to put it back on the cog wheels. Overall, Mike and his colleague were quick and courteous. Only reason why I am not giving 5 stars, is that the work space in the basement by my furnace was not cleaned up after their cementing work. There were chunks of old concrete and concrete dust on the floor (this was not there before they performed their work). There was also some small pieces of trash left on my yard (pieces of a cement bag, aluminium trimmings, and what appeared to be plastic adhesive tape).

John Air completed the installation and startup of my new Goodman AC and Furnace. The entire process of dealing with John was exemplary. He was easily reachable through the Thumbtack website/app via chat, and then was reachable prior to the service appointment. He was on time and came prepared with all necessary equipment and tools. He was knowledgeable and professional and completed the work quickly and efficiently. He tried to round down on the number of service hours, but I insisted that he round up and even included a large tip for him because the experience was, by far, the best home contractor experience I've had. I own a rental property and often need contractors to service appliances, etc. I am extremely happy with the entire process with Thumbtack (way better than Home Advisor and Angies List, that spam you with useless emails and phone calls from big-name, expensive contractors. John's hourly labor rate was very reasonable. I give him 5+ stars.

Eddie replaced/installed three bathroom exhaust fans and did a great job. With the house built in ‘92 we had a feeling he was going to run into some issues. He did a good job explaining everything along the way and even checked the attic to make sure all three were venting properly from the house. We would bring him back for more work.

I had Ken come out to install my tankless water heater. From the moment I spoke with him through Thumbtack, he was willing to tackle the job. I sent him pictures of the project and after coming to my home to make sure he captured everything needed for the project, his quote was reasonable and fair. He showed he cared about my home with putting booties over his shoes before coming in. He was polite and very knowledgeable about his profession. The work came out better then what I was expected. He purchased all the parts needed and installed my unit. Not only did he ensure the installation was correct, he made sure it was appealing to the eye. I could not be happier with working Living Stone. Thank you Ken, for treating me like family.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

    • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
    • The temperature cannot be regulated.
    • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
    • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
    • The thermostat isn’t working.
    • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
