Tony is magnificent at his profession. He has done what no others has attempted to do. I have an older boiler that basically has two wires and no common wire. There was this wifi thermostat that I have been trying to install for years now. I have inquired about getting it install from a few HVAC personnel and they have not been helpful. Tony is very resourceful, meticulous and studious. He has put all other HVAC pros to shame. He is a consummate pro who never gives up and research issues until they get resolved. I appreciate his service a lot. My wifi thermostat is now working. For this reason, I give the highest recommendation for him.

Glen and his crew did an excellent job laying my natural stone floors. From the first conversation, I knew they were knowledgeable and professional. The installers worked with my family so that we could maintain our normal routines as much as possible during the installation. The flooring installation exceeded my expectations. Glen worked with my budget and provided helpful suggestions to save money. I look forward to a long relationship with JR Custom Builders as they are coming back to renovate my kitchen.

Anthony Madonna performed a drywall patch repair, and paint repair on a water damaged section of drywall. He also re-hung our kitchen island light. Anthony completed the work over several days since the drywall repair and painting had several steps. Anthony was always on time and worked quickly and throughly. Anthony covered and protected our floor and island when working and cleaned up after every visit. Also, based upon the work completed the price couldn’t be beat! I would certainly recommend this company for a home repair! We will be using their services again in the spring.

We were very happy with Tom. He was the only contractor that responded to us after calling 5 contractors. He repaired a crumbled step in 90 degree weather and did a great job. Would highly recommend.

Kevin is knowledgeable in all aspects of home improvement projects having experience with renovating his own home completely. Kevin is thorough and committed to excellence going above and beyond to ensure the customer's needs are met. We had a 55" TV mounted above our fireplace with associated power and HDMI wiring installed in a professional manner. The area was left orderly and clean as originally found at the start. Kevin has a keen attention to detail and works intelligently through all challenges encountered. We were very satisfied with the outcome and highly recommend Kevin for your future needs.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

French Doors were installed perfectly, even though the doors were bigger than the doors the original contractor installed. Dave is extremely professional, arrives on time & is very upfront about the cost. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a very reliable contractor who gets the job done in a very timely and professional manner. Can't wait for him to help me with my next project! Great job Dave:-)))

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to share my success story with you, I hired STP and Home Decor to hang drywall in my unfinished basement the I had another contractor begin. Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

M.J.S Did electrical work for our garage and shed. His work was done promptly and effectively. Reason didn't give full 5 is because we also are looking to have work done elsewhere in the home and have been waiting a long time to get the estimate for that area. He is personable and does the job however, so this is a minor inconvenience.

We hired Joe to install casing around two doorways and are very pleased with our decision and his work. He promptly responded to all communication and was very professional. The job took a little longer than expected to complete but this was only because he took the extra time to do the job right and secure additional materials that enhanced the final result. The casings look great and really make a difference in the look of the rooms. We plan to hire him again for future projects, including the production and installation of barn doors. We definitely recommend him to anyone else seeking home improvement.

Neiko was great, he called to address my issue within 30 mins of submitting the request. Next, he made his way to my home to check out my project and give an estimate. This happened to be an exhaust project on my truck. But he didnt shy away from an automotive welding job which is what impressed me most. After giving me the estimate, he took my exhaust pieces to his shop and came back to weld everything onto my truck the next morning. Total install time was about 30 mins and his pricing was very reasonable. I'd hire him again for sure.

So i had a total of 6 people come and quote me for this project. 4/6 were cheaper than Paul (not by much) but what made me choose Paul was his attention to detail. Most folks came over, looked at the project, left and sent me the quote later. Paul came over, took measurements, and made sure he was able to find siding that closely matches what I have BEFORE he gave me a quote. This way there were no surprises when it came time to do the project. When the siding and windows came in Paul and I believe his Father In Law came over and worked thoroughly making sure everything was done correct. When there were concerns I had (nothing major) he was quick to acknowledge and resolve them. He was very responsive the entire time and kept me in the loop with things as it were happening. I appreciate all the hard work and effort he put in removing my door and putting in the window and I look forward to working with him on further projects I have.

When he was delayed in traffic, called to give me the name and description of his worker who would be arriving before him. Did only the work needed to repair my deck, did not try to "pad" the job or take advantage of a single older woman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.
