"My massage therapist, Vernita, is awesome. I normally get a massage from her once a month. I am often stressed from my job, but after Vernita's healing hands, I am so relaxed. The atmosphere is very soothing; the kinks and knots just seem to melt away. There have been times that I've heard myself snoring. That's how calm and tranquil I feel. I highly recommend Vernita and Soothing Agave."

"Steven is an excellent massage therapist. He has worked on me several times over the last couple months and I intend to use him again. He is very caring and thoughtful, and works diligently on any problem areas. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable with a new massage therapist, but Steven makes sure you are comfortable with him and puts you at ease. I have gotten massages from many massage therapists and can state that he is at the top of the list. I highly recommend him."

"I have been a member of A Balanced Life Massage for nearly 3 years and greatly appreciate the professionalism and quality of care I receive. The Himalayan Salt Sauna is a lovely way to relax and loosen up before a massage. I have my favorite massage therapist, but also like to try others on occasion. Each brings their own particular benefits and technique to the experience. It's also great to try different modalities of massage, and even the acupuncture. An additional benefit is the rewards program, in which clients can earn points to use toward services like an upgrade such as hot towels or aromatherapy, and even a free massage! I saved up my points and used them on my birthday for a special treat. YES!"

"Keyon is one of the best massage therapist that i've been to in years! I was a little hesitant in deciding to stop seeing my physical therapist, but I'm definitely in good hands with Keyon. His skill and expertise was quite impressive, not to mention the therapeutic atmosphere he has created. I scheduled an hour session with him, but I was so impressed and decided to do a two hour therapy session! Very professional, clean, organized and skilled! I will definitely return! Thanks Keyon"

"Especially notable about Anthony were two things: His knowledge and understanding of how the human body is interconnected and functions as a whole. Other massage therapists spent hours focusing on the spot that hurt chronically, but never realized that what hurt wasn’t actually the source (and so they never fully relieved the pain). Anthony on the other hand was able to connect the dots and find the source even when it wasn't obvious. Even more amazing: he is able to do the above *without causing pain* in the process. Every massage therapist I saw prior to Anthony had the motto "you can either have a relaxing massage, OR fix a problem." So I assumed painful meant progress. Anthony will help fix the problem quickly AND make you feel relaxed in the process. I've struggled with chronic pain which has hindered my practice of yoga, martial arts, and just daily life. An orthopedic doctor, 3 physical therapists, 3 chiropractors, and 4 massage therapists were all unable to help. I found exercises that helped, but I pushed too hard, resulting in a delayed reaction of "I can't stand fully upright" and intense pain. Enter Anthony. Within minutes he was able to relax the hip muscles that were locked up/cramping from being overworked. And by the end of a short session it was as if someone had hit rewind - I didn't even feel sore. What would have taken me days (or more) to recover on my own was fixed in less than an hour, allowing me to immediately return to my exercises. My only complaint is he is located on the opposite side of the state from me, and I have yet to find a massage therapist in Pittsburgh at his skill level."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
