I connected with RAP on thumbtack back in 2014. At the time I was seeking a female trainer. I was a newly divorcee, my self esteem was at an all time low. I was not looking to train with the opposite sex. I say all that to say, that although our connection was brief he left such an impact on me, so much so that I saved his number! Needless to say, I looked for him at the beginning of this year (2016) and trained with him for about 3 months. So glad that I did!! I was very comfortable with his workouts. He's very attentive to his clients and will work the areas you're targeting. More importantly he kept it interesting and motivating during each session. The gym is quaint and the people that frequent there are very friendly. Overall, nice location & atmosphere and RAP is very knowledgable and always willing to share good tips on diet plans and exercises to follow at home. Truly a great trainer! Even if you don't choose to do a "one on one" training he still makes the time to make you feel like it is, he's quite the multitasker! I feel and look fantastic! Thank you, RAP!

It wasn't until I found Jason Kasheta at Fitness Together that I realized what a true personal trainer could do to help me achieve my fitness goals. I had trained with other so called trainers before but never achieved the fitness goals that I desired. All that changed once I started training with Jason. Not only did Jason help me achieve my fitness goals, but he has allowed me to pass my goals and set new goals that I never thought could be attainable. I know with a trainer like Jason, any fitness goal I set can and will be attained.

I started training at Benefitness a month ago and it has already exceeded my expectations. Andrew has helped me recover a lot of strength that I never thought I would have again after breaking my leg. He is very professional, motivating, and tailors my workouts to my individual needs. I would highly recommend him as a trainer.

Elite Strength & Fitness fits into my schedule and is an efficient and effective way to exercise. The one on one training has left me feeling confident. Having had back issues for years, I have been thrilled with the strengthening exercises. It has made a huge difference in how I feel. The climate controlled room is chilled and I leave feeling great and not drenched in sweat. It is so nice not to have to deal with a health club scene. To top it off, my cholesterol improved after I started Elite Strength and Fitness. In the report that my Internist sent to me she wrote: "Additional good news is that you have improved your cholesterol significantly! Likely due to your exercise!" Thank you Elite Strength and Fitness!

I trained with Alyssa in Florida and I can't say enough great things about her. She truly tooo her time evaluating me/my needs before going full swing into training sessions. By doing this, it allowed her to see what areas I'm most weak in, strong in and where my injuries were. Knowing my last injuries alllwed her to create a game plan that truly catered to my needs (weight loss and toning) without me feeling like I would re-injure myself. She pays attention to form and pushes you to do the best you can! I lost around 20ish lbs with her (maybe more) and felt stronger each session. I highly recommend Alyssa to help you reach your goals! I would still be training with her if she hasn't moved from FL!

I'm a 29 yr old young lady, average to athletic build, who has dabbled in cross fit, group fitness, yoga and olympic lifting. When I came to the strength shop my goals were strength and body building. What I love about Matt and his gym is the wealth and knowledge and experience he brings to the table (body building, power lifting, gymnastics), how sustainable and comprehensive his programs are and how attentive he is. When I train with him I learn about the anatomy, physiology, and science of strength training. I am not chained to him or his gym, rather I learn about the rationale behind my strength training program so that I can take it with me anywhere and adjust accordingly as I advance. My current program is perfect for me, every day I start out with a warm up AND mobility drill (yoga, dynamic stretches, and basic strength exercises are totally peppered in there) then my primary lift and accessory work. Of course things are adjusted according to my needs and performance but there is always a plan. My workouts are purposeful AF and I never feel like I'm wasting time or don't understand the benefit in an exercise or movement. I've only been training with Matt for a few months but by every metric I'm better for it. I'm stronger, smarter, leaner, more focused, my lifts are cleaner. Just yes. TSS is a legit strength factory- no gimmicks, fads, or nonsense. Come prepared to train hard and train smart. Guarenteed you'll learn something new every time. Also...gainz. All the gainz. 💪

Not only does she focus in areas needed/requested, she is also trained/certified in sports medicine specific to injuries and with my bad back, there was never a time I had pain to my back after training with Tiffany. She is very knowledgeable and knows what she is doing. If you're looking for a trainer, I HIGHLY recommend Tiffany!

A then and now photo, the picture with the pink shirt was just over a year ago. Depressed always tired and felt awful. Just a few short months after this was taken I called Jennifer on a late night thinking I would just leave a voicemail, and she would get back to me. I was wrong, she answered and I set an appointment. Not only did she teach me how to eat which I thought was going to be extremely difficult but she modified training sessions. I walk out those doors after a work out with my heart still racing a smile on my face and ready to face the day. Time is manageable but it's what you do with it that matters. I spend once a week with Jennifer working out. The rest of the week I try and do as much as I can, now running (something I could never do) With where I work I am always lifting and get in at least 10,000 steps. I am currently 198!!! Out of the 200 club! I still have a lot of work to do but I wouldn't change a thing. Jennifer brought back something I had lost. Confidence, self love, joy, and independence. These are true results and I couldn't be more grateful in what she has done for me. I can't say enough since I even rave about her at my job! She has even changed the way I walk. I am pingeon toes so my feet naturally curve in. I have been to Dr's. Who couldn't fix them with orthotics. Jen managed to fix my feet in under a year. My balance is incredible compared to what it was. My ankle that I broke almost 15 years ago has become the strongest it's ever been. I even notice the difference just when I walk from point A to Point B. All in all I will rave forever about Jen and her amazing talent in transforming those who are ready and willing to put in the work. She won't let you down!

Chris is a very professional personal trainer who loves what he does for a living. He is very attentive and focused on you and your session when training with him. After starting the program, it seemed to me that I was always eating (per my trainers instructions), and I didn't see how it could possibly help my weight by eating more often. However, I was reassured at two weeks when I realized that my waist size had already decreased! I'm excited about sticking with the program 3 times a week. It’s very encouraging and fun. I highly recommend working out with Chris, to obtain the results that you desire. We have only one body, so it's important to treat it with the respect it deserves. I recommend Chris, if you are looking for a REAL TRAINER! Down 7bls in 4 weeks and 23 more to Go!!!

I have been working with Andrew about 2 years. I first hired him because he is a Marine and my son was looking for a trainer to be better prepared for his sophomore year at The Citadel in SC. Ge was going for an Army ROTC scholarship. Well he qualified for his scholarship and I decided to work with Andrew. He has a lot of training knowledge & changes up the routine so it stays fresh. I feel better at going on 64 than I did at 44!

I really enjoyed training with Elizabeth. I had hit a plateau in my fitness and she was able get me a good training routine which helped propel my level of fitness ASAP!!!. She always gave me good feed back and pointers in my workouts, (correcting my form, speed of my repetitions, and keeping my rest time minimal between exercises). She is extremely knowledgeable in weight training and yoga, great motivator, and she will get you results, a true pleasure to work with. Aaron W.

I have severe thyroid and knee issues and Kim did everything she could to make sure that I was comfortable every step of the way. She has been training me from another state which is a fantastic idea. I got numerous food and exercises specifically for me. I haven't ever had someone put in so much effort to make sure I was comfortable. If I ever had a issue Kim made sure we adjusted what I needed done. I would recommend her and Flourish Fitness to anyone looking to either get in shape, learn better nutrition, find out how to work with any health issues you have. She goes above and beyond to make sure you get what you need.

I've never experienced workouts as intense and effective as the ones Marci custom creates for me. She knows where my problem areas are (both physical and mental) and she focuses on my cardio first, I was focused on strength training and was merely bulking up and all it did was cause.my body pain and made my clothes.tight. I needed to learn stamina and breathing first! Lost some inches right away, too! Marci uses humor and pointed encouragement in order to help push me through the moments when my body and mind want to quit. I need someone to help push me like this, as I have had difficulty following through with weight loss goals in the past. Marci has the knowledge, the experience and the heart for her job. She takes health and fitness very seriously and focuses more on helping me to reach my goals than about her own financial gain. I appreciate that, as I have had a few financial setbacks this year. She was willing to work with me when I had difficulty maintaining the cost of the program, in order to keep improving. I have since caught up and am so grateful she didn't give up on me--I would have had to start completely over, and probably would have not made it back. I have learned to appreciate her mid-week voice mails and encouraging banter. She is truly a friend to her clients and I am much stronger today thanks to her professional commitment to my well-being and overall health. Can't wait to see what she has in store for me next week when we begin to combine strength and conditioning with cardio, also speed and agility exercises! Always new challenges! This girl is the real deal! I definitely recommend her to anyone who has ever made excuses not to get started. Call Marci--she WILL help you reach your goals!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
