We needed a variety of repairs done around the house and Stew from R&S did a professional job and we couldn't be happier! Not only did he repair the doors and drywall as we requested, but he completed a plumbing job and and the many other problems that popped up. The prices are reasonable and the work is quality!

Marcelo was so easy to work with and he and his crew were very professional besides being top notch painters. I had quotes from several other companies which were all typically more than I Paint USA but choosing to work directly with the contractor himself rather than a big company sales rep was the right decision. Now my neighbors are jealous and my house looks great! Thank you Marcelo.

I hired Ramon Douglas of RD Handyman & Cleaning Services to assemble a "Tillman Media Center" which is an all wood piece of furniture brand new in a box completely unassembled with complicated instructions. Hiring him was a stroke of luck for me & an excellent decision. I am extremely fussy with eagle eyes & great attention to detail. I sat & watched him as he worked. I constantly asked a lot of questions as he worked. Most others would have found that annoying, but not Ramon. He answered all my questions as he worked in a meticulous manner never losing his positive, patient, charming manner. His work was flawless. Just perfect and I was so thrilled with the final product. I am planning to use Ramon for many other home projects knowing for sure that when I work with Ramon there will be no stress. Not only was his work perfect, but his price was great!!! What could be better than Best Price, Perfect Work, Great Person and NO STRESS.

What can I say...this all started with just replacing our floors in a home from 1964 we purchased and turned into a complete interior renovation where literally every surface was redone except for the windows. We decided to expand our project little by little asking more and more questions and Gabriel was right on top of it helping us to make easy decisions. In the end, essentially redoing the whole house removing all traces of the 60's was on tap for before we moved in. Now that it is done, I can say Gabriel and crew successfully turned an old dated house into a gorgeous new space and he and crew are the best crew in the world in my opinion. Not only Gabriel but ALL of his crew have gone out of their way to make sure we were happy and to make sure the job is done right. Gabriel is incredibly trustworthy as others have stated and his crew feel like family to my wife and I at this point. Our project took around 3.5 months including all permits from the city and everything is up to code. That is a VERY fast turnaround considering the scope of work involved...just waiting for permits took 3 weeks out of that project time alone. Basically, these guys were flying the whole time doing great work across the board and we are very happy customers. If you're reading this know that Gabriel and his crew and Luis with Conquer Builders (the General Contractor) are responsive, honest, proud, ethical, hardworking people who will do what needs to be done to make you happy. As expected with a project of this scope, surprises came up and there was never a moment where all hope or control was lost - there was always a plan to push on through and get it done, again, at breakneck pace. I could not recommend W&B, Gabriel, his crew or Luis @ Conquer Builders high enough. It is and has been a pleasure to work with them and we will absolutely be using them in the future. Internet reviews are often shady because you know their friends and family probably write bogus reviews and try to make them seem like they're something they are not but these guys are the real deal. You have zero worries hiring this company; I am not a family member writing this to boost their ratings, I am a very happy customer whose home is listed in the photos. We have cats and with every room being worked on, it was a HUGE concern of ours that they did not get out..Gabriel and crew respected the "safe room" boundaries and worked around it. If they needed to get in that room, they would let me know and I could come by and move the cats to another room so they could work. Most contractors do not care and will do whatever they want and not pay attention and listen to the homeowners...not these guys! Thank you for building our sofl paradise! Now we can unpack! :)

Roberto is an awesome hard worker and very helpful! Not only did he repair all the doors in our home but he did it on very short notice and with a huge grin on his face the entire time. He also showed my husband ways to take care of other things so he could finish other repairs. Not only do we have the best repairman to call now, we also have a wonderful new friend!

My wife and I hired Richard Phillips to update our master bathroom and linen closet. Little did we know or expect our 75 yr old Florida cottage required to be striped to the studs, reinforced, floors leveled, doors hung and that's just for starters. Richard's expertise and vast experience gave us great peace of mind. His attention to detail is superb. Richard offered us design ideas and made recommendations and suggestions that enhanced the overall project. Richard took the time to shop with us as well. We have a new fondness for Home Depot. Richard is trustworthy and reliable. During the project we needed an electrician and plumber. Richard arranged that also. We had a few little home repair projects around the house that he gladly fixed for us. The project took Richard 2 weeks. His labor rates are very fair. This guy works nonstop! I would be completely remiss if I didn't mention his wonderful apprentice Jake. He is a hard worker and does a great job. My wife and I love the bathroom and look forward to scheduling our next project with Richard and apprentice Jake. Thanks again guys, you did a great job! Gloria & Ronnie

I highly recommend Leo and his wife Nery! They are punctual, professional, and take great pride in their work. I received a quote for installing and painting interior doors the same day I reached out. Since I don't live in Miami, Leo kept me informed via phone and sent me pictures of the progress on a daily basis. Leo and Nery worked very fast and did an excellent job. Leo customized some doors to make them fit in uneven and non-standard openings. They even swept all the dirt that the previous contractors left behind. We are very impressed with the quality of work and their professionalism from beginning to end. We will definitely hire them again for future needs.

If you are looking for someone to remodel your entire home or just do a small fix up job then Juan Carlos with Five Star Finishes and his crew is the way to go. I would highly recommend their service to anyone. It is very hard to find people like this in south Fl. Very professional, friendly knowledgeable, clean, diligent and simply the best! I watch my old condo transform from cocoon to the most beautiful butterfly. Five Star Finishes worked very hard gutting and remodeling my 2 bed/ bath condo in a very short time frame making this job as easy and smooth as possible. Very important to note living in the condo bldg , all my neighbors applause them for being clean, considerate and complying with all the rules and regs of condo bldg etiquette. Bottom line i would give them 100 star rating !

Jose was great. He came and assed the bathtub tile repair job and then completed the next day. High quality in a short time. We also had him repair the tile on the bathroom floor as it was leaking. He went out of his way to go all over town to find the right tile as well. He and his co-worker were very respectful of our home and cleaned up nicely before he left. I would hire him again for tile work.

After selecting PBB LLC to do repair work at my home I was pleasantly surprised at their professionalism. They started the work on time, and they kept me informed as to the progress. They were on the job when they said they would be. They left the work area clean every day and you can't tell where the repairs were done. The guys were polite and respectful and the work was done on time.

I called a previously employed contractors named Milan and Son who did a terrible job and destroyed my carpet and bathroom. I had to kick them out of my house. Stay away from Andre and Felix and Antonio. They completely ruined the work. I almost gave up on Thumbtack but I decided to give Thumbtack another chance. So I contacted Rick Ricketts Home Remodeling Repairs. And he came over that same night and took a look at the shoddy work Milan and Son did. Rick said he can correct all the problems and he did a fantastic job. Professional and clean. And he did it for a reasonable price even though there was a lot more work to do. So definitely I would hire Rick again.

As the initial project has wrapped up, there were a number of small details which left me a bit underwhelmed. - The cleanliness and care of Josh's crew was a concern as items surrounding the construction area were not well protected and required more cleanup/repair than I anticipated having to do, especially considering they were hired to repair my home. Some examples: paint removal from surrounding surfaces, spot cleaning tracked-in grease, patching "banged" trim from appliance relocating, replacing warped bathroom door - Missed details like insufficient paint coverage in areas, missing grout joints, not planning the order of the installation caused some areas to be left unpolished or unfinished entirely. - Despite some personal requests and upgrades, the final cost ended up being 30% more. I know to expect some margin of error for surprises. The original estimate was $4572.50 and the final cost was $6547.19. Overall, they completed the job and it's functional. I did not complain or haggle over additional expenses and paid as agreed. The transaction was average. I might consider using them again for projects where being "rough around the edges" is acceptable and mentally add extra margin for error in estimate price.

I initially contacted Val-Trell in the fall of 2014 because I was looking for a property to purchase and remodel. I was particularly interested in purchasing a historic home and wanted insight on what to expect when gutting and remodeling a historic house. I know there are a lot of hoops to jump when taking on a historic house. I needed a contractor that I could trust and one that would be honest with me. When I met Hank (the president) he was friendly and seemed to know a lot about historic houses. He was willing to go with me to look at a few properties to see what I was up against. When we set up a day and time to meet, Hank was prompt and knowledgeable about the rules and regulations of remodeling a historic home. He met with me on two occasions to inspect potential properties. Throughout the process of looking for properties, not only did he make himself available to come with me but also on the phone when I had questions. As it turns out, I did not purchase a historic house but I did purchase a house that needed an extensive amount of gutting and remodeling. Val-Trell used top of the line products but were fair with their prices. After I moved in, I noticed that they installed and added a few things that I know I did not pay for. Val-Trell spent 4 months at the property and every time that I went to check in, there were workers there and Hank was present too. The workers were tidy and cleaned up every day before leaving. I love my new house and I'm looking forward to working with Val-Trell in the future when I finally purchase a historic house. If you are looking for a honest, professional and reliable construction company, call Hank at Val-Trell Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
