When my husband and I began building our 10,000 sq. ft. home in Oak Brook, IL, Rosalinda from ROSALINDA'S INTERIORS, INC. was involved from the inception making changes on the drawings improving the design and function in different areas. For example, she designed an island that had wood cabinets below for storage with a granite top for the lower level kitchen. (secondary kitchen) This multi-purpose island was valuable when we were entertaining and would serve as a buffet table or dining table for guests using four under counter stools, and was used as a sushi station when a chef prepared rolls. She was instrumental in furnishing three levels, including paint selections, stone selections for 9 bathrooms, accessories for 7 fireplaces, designed custom draperies for 4 bedrooms, library, kitchen, office, formal living, family (approx. 12-15' windows), breakfast room and formal dining room, designed custom bedding for 4 bedrooms, made selections for wood floors, area carpets for all rooms, including one for the billiard room on the walk-out level, carpeting for two staircases, one a spiral, and elevator, chandeliers, many crystal, including crystal light fixtures for 22 closets, ceiling fans and crystal lamps throughout. There were numerous accessories that completed each room including a custom made mirror imported from Mexico, approx. 5' wide by 11' tall that hung over the family room fireplace: stunning! She also helped to select the outdoor furniture that was placed poolside, on 4 balconies and deck, approx. 80 pieces. Because her work exceeded our expectations, we again requested her services, years later, when it was time to downsize and build a 3,000 sq. ft. home in Naples, FL. She assisted with window treatments, including drapery, rods, black-out shades, woven, wood shades, and sheers that dressed the windows in 3 bedrooms, family, clubroom, dining, bathroom and garage. She helped with wood floor and paint selections throughout and stone selections for 4 bathrooms. Her passion and up-to-date design expertise made her an advocate in transforming a vision into a reality. From experience, we knew that Rosalinda was trustworthy, reliable, punctual for home/field meetings, kept us informed of deliveries, was prompt in answering questions, returning phone calls/text messages. This high level of professionalism and service eliminated stress, guesswork, anxiety that could arise when building and furnishing a home and saved us time and money as well. In addition, her friendly, hard-working nature, work ethic, attention to detail, enthusiasm for interior designing, exceptional qualifications made working with her an enjoyable experience! The end result is credited to Rosalinda, an extraordinary interior designer! We wanted our homes to look gorgeous; Rosalinda delivered! Cristina and Dominic

After flipping houses for 20 years, I have not met such a talented, skilled contractor with amazing design skills. The price, everything was above and beyond. The project turned out 300% more beautiful than I had imagined. Can't wait to hire him again.

About

I handle all interior styles. The following is how it works: 1. Call or e-mail me to arrange for a no-charge initial consultation. I consider this to be a working meeting, so in the hour or hour-and-a-half time frame, I'll be giving you a lot of free ideas. During our meeting, we'll also be reviewing a binder of magazine photos that I've assembled. It's very telling to have you flip through the photos and inform me of your likes and dislikes. We'll then get a very immediate idea of your preferred style; that's a very important process in order to make our selections! If you also have magazine photos, that's a bonus. 2. I'll then get you a proposal for the entire project. In it, I list everything that it will take to design your home per our initial meeting. My fees are $115 per hour, but if we can determine a scope of work, I can quote you a flat fee. Any purchases that you make through my firm, I sell to you at my "net" or discounted rate, plus a fee of 20% to expedite that purchase. 3. Should we decide to work with each other, I then hit the ground running, and at our second meeting, I'll be giving you a full presentation with actual selections and examples of the design concepts that we discussed. After that, it's all about additional shopping, getting quotes, establishing a budget and assembling your interior. What clients find appealing about my system is that I design the entire project up-front, so that we maintain a cohesive look. When you make the purchase is of no consequence to me. However, I find that when the clients have the big picture and pricing, the purchasing/implementing process goes faster. Having an a-la-carte listing of all of the items lets you prioritize, and when funds become available, you know exactly what the next item to purchase is. I've worked with many clients for a number of years this way, carefully completing a designed project. I insist on having fun working with my clients because I'm not a design dictator. I don't care where the inspiration comes from (once, it came from UPS delivery personnel) as long as the selection excites you. Moreover, it's very important to interview as many designers as possible; you must click with that person. Please be sure to visit my website! Dave Yates

Our Condo Association hired 2 designers for the same multi-year exterior project. The project was to design a facelift for 34 year old condo buildings. The results were presented to the on-site homeowners who overwhelmingly and unanimously selected Josie's design. She provided recommendations on both material and color of replacement decking, handrails, paint, lighting, bldg numbers, and a beautiful option to update the exterior design of our buildings with stone accents. Her color presentation was "full sized" making selection easier. She provided electronic renderings that were shared with our snowbirds who had yet to return to Florida for the winter season. The condo Board was very impressed withe the quick turnaround and the extent of the design; down to the smallest of detail.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
