We renovated our whole house basically. All cabinets refinished, paint inside and out, some tile work and new countertops in bathrooms. We are very pleased with the end result. There were hiccups but Steve was always patient and worked to make sure everything came out the way we wanted. He changed some things after started when I changed my mind without complaint. Will definitely be calling him again. :)

Our cabinet painting job is in progress. My cabinets were dark walnut and have been transformed to an oil based white linen. Matches perfectly with other pieces in house. Leo and his staff are on time and professional. Estimate was reasonable.

Richard created a new drawer face for a piece of abandoned furniture that I found as well as reassembling and refinishing a family writing table that had lost a leg and the pull out writing surface. I initially sought him out to do just repair work; however, I saw some of the pieces he had refinished and were ready for delivery to its owner. The four poster bed he refinished was unbelievable. After seeing his work and absolute pride he takes in his work, I decided to have him refinish my table and will have him refinish a Windsor chair he also repaired. He is a gem. I was impressed with the condition of his workshop. It was as neat as a pin and an indicator of the type of work he does. I am exceedingly happy with his work and the pride he takes in his work is clearly evident. I would recommend him without reservation.

I had a TV armoire that needed stripped to match a lingere chest that had already been done by the previous owner. I'd found numerous local companies on the internet that gave me quotes. All of them wanted to do a complete refinishing job instead of just what I'd asked, which was only to strip the piece and all of them quoted well over what I was willing to pay. I was about to give up on finding anyone to do the work when I came across Affordable Custom Woodworking via Thumbtack. Jeff provided a quick reply to my request and only quoted the exact work I wanted done. He was prompt in his follow-up and and prompt when he came to pick-up the piece and then drop it off after. He even took a drawer from the previously stripped lingere chest to attempt to match it. The work that Jeff did is AMAZING! The piece is absolutely beautiful and the wood is smooth as silk. Jeff did a wonderful job. I'm more than pleased with both the quality of work as well as the price, and in fact, have already discussed with him the next piece of furniture that I want done! I'd recommend him anyday to anyone needing to have wood refinished or as in my case, just stripped!

Hired Randy to hang a medicine cabinet and mirror. He was on time and very professional. He asked me prior to hanging the mirror if I liked it and I realized it was way too small for the space. Decided to have him change out old outlets for new child safety outlets instead. Had him come back the next week to hang the new mirror which was his idea, a big mirror with white frame. He cut the frame out and hung it and it looks amazing! I wish I could share a photo. He also hooked up our double sinks and installed a towel bar and toilet paper holder. I would highly recommend Randy for any and all jobs. He charges a fair rate and is extremely professional. SO happy to have found him. Will definitely be hiring him in the future for any and all jobs. Thank you again!!

I can't say enough good things about John and the work he did for us. We hired him to build us a large, modern, floating cabinet for our living room. It needed to be custom built to fit around a 74 inch electric fireplace, and we wanted cabinet doors on either side of the fireplace. John showed us pics of work he had done, wood samples, and then took our ideas and his expertise and created a MASTERPIECE. I'd post pics if Thumbtack would let me because it's beyond beautiful. We loved it so much we hired him to make us a custom dining table with a custom bench. Only a month later, and all the pieces are finished, in our condo, and look stunning. The attention to detail John puts into his work is impressive and impeccable. Also, I can honestly say he is the BEST communicator of any contractor we have ever used (and we've used a lot for many different projects). We texted him with LOTS of questions and photos and we never waited more than a few minutes for a reply. I didn't expect such prompt replies EVERY time, but he always made himself available and was always friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating. AND he cleaned up after the installation (even when I told him he didn't have to, he insisted.) Last but not least, we love his work so much that we've also hired him to make us new kitchen cabinets and I KNOW they are going to be amazing. True story: My father (who had been in the furniture business for over 30 years) saw the dining table today and said, "I'm astonished and happy to see that furniture like this is still being made, because I haven't seen anything close to this quality in stores." Not one complaint, or suggestion for improvement. We were impressed from start to finish. We wish we could give more than 5 stars.

Refinishing a wall, mud, tape and texture. You'll immediately like the guy when you meet him. Johan always showed up when he said he would, completed the work on time and at a good price and it looks great. Now I won't have to call around to find a contractor when it comes time for the kitchen work...

About

There are hundreds of cabinet makers that claim to make "custom cabinets" but installing cabinets and playing around with crown molding or fancy trim they just bought from a millwork company isn't custom work. Custom work is when you throw away all standards and let the customer tell you what he/she wants you to make. Instead of buying a corner make a corner at your shop and incorporate a secret compartment. Have a full column that looks like a column and feels like a column but hides a special feature. Whenever you the customer asks: " can you add a special trim here?" and the cabinet maker says yes, ask if they are going to make the actual trim or buy it?. If they're buying it, more than likely they are also buying the cabinets. Don't get me wrong, wood is wood here and anywhere else in the world. But I will never grab a brush and compare myself to Michelangelo.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
