Joseph was awesome! He came to the property and examined the our two oak trees; he was honest with us to say our trees did not need trimming/pruning. He is the one to say if a job really needs to be done or not. I appreciated his honesty and him time. He is a great arborist with integrity!

Nick and his crew trimmed 2 trees, pruned a bird of parsfisevcut back several hedges. The front oak tree was particularly involved and he managed to do this and not damage the surrounding ground foliage. He does know how to properly cut a tree in arborist fashion to the best advantage. There is now a large county fee for commercial dumping of the debris, but I arranged for friends to haul the yard waste in lieu of this fee. Nick's team bagged the small trimmings and stacked the larger ones to assist.

Pruned trees on my property. Cut back off the roof and cut weight off two bottle brush trees. The three gentlemen came out the same day I called them and performed the work the next day. Very respectful and professional. My yard looks wonderful and I can see my trees taking big sighs! Highly recommended 3rd Gen to everyone!

Outstanding! I'm so glad we went with Apex! Our job consisted of tree removals, shrub removals, tree pruning, stone removal, in large quantity. The crew all worked diligently and timely. The owner was more than fair with his quote and threw in some afterthought extras. Also very knowledgeable about trees and shrubs. We've signed up with them for yearly tree maintenance. Highly recommend and thanks for the great work! Regards, D. Holland

Jeff pruned the roots of our oak tree, re-sodded our entire back yard and installed 5 new sprinkler heads. Jeff was very nice, knowledgeable and honest; it is clear he has a passion for what he does. He gave us estimates on everything before he started the work and kept us updated along the way. His work completely transformed our back yard and we could not possibly be happier with it! We would absolutely recommend Jeff to anyone looking to have similar work done!

I have a beautiful Oak Tree that needed trimming. I called several companies and I got the three "P's", Professionalism, Promptness and Price from TreeCology. Ryan was a pleasure to work with and they did exactly what he said they would do and left my yard clean of debris. Additionally, the work was done the very next day! My neighbors just had their trees trimmed and stated that they wished they used TreeCology. Everyone who has seen my tree comments on how beautiful it is. I DO recommend Treecology, they are Certified Arborists and understand how to properly prune a tree.

Paul worked with me to completely re-vamp my front and backyard. It was my fault for the neglect and he helped me with every step! He scheduled palm tree removals, Bird of Paradise’s pruning and helped in finding the right plants for all of my gardens. Dave has been taking care of our lawn for 3 years and I couldn't be more pleased. He will also perform other services, such as mulching, sod, trimming shrubs, as well as more extensive tree pruning. I've found him to be very knowledgeable about what's going on with our lawn and landscaping, and he is always responsive when I text him with a question or emergency. I would highly recommend Dave and the Central Florida Property Maintenance company!

We used Randy to remove more than 30 3-foot high shrubs bordering around our pool cage. He was great, very professional and friendly. He came out and did a site inspection checking to see where the irrigation and pool plumbing had been installed. It took him about an hour to use a chainsaw to cut the shrubs down to the ground and grind the stumps. He and his helper were efficient and thorough and even cleaned up the area after to prepare it to be re-landscaped. His pricing was fair and I would definitely use him again. We are very happy with his work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
