Chris soft washed our asphalt shingle roof and it looks brand new one again, after 12 years. He was very responsive and punctual. He wasn't the cheapest quote but offered the best value. I would recommend Bay Bright to anyone in need of asphalt shingle roof cleaning.

Shawn was hired to clean our old shingle roof. Once on site, I asked him if he could also clean the facia around the house and could he work in a full cleaning of our large pool cage, frame & screens both inside and out. He spent all day here (10 hrs) working diligently and even thru some driving rain. His soft wash pump broke down and he basically cleaned the roof with the pressure washer. Roof looks fine, although I was trying to avoid any high pressure washing of those asphalt shingles. That is the only reason for only 4 stars. I would more than recommend True Blue for all types of exterior cleaning.

I needed part of a chain link fence removed and replaced. George did the ordering and pick up and also got the bag I needed to discard the fencing. He was prompt and did a wonderful job. He also helped me with a hole I needed fixed on the roof. He went above and beyond helping me. I have a couple more things that I will be calling him for. George is your man if you need help!

I had a great experience with Camo Krew! Called & Julian came out and went thru the scope, asked questions &made suggestions about things I didn't think about {downspout placement, gutter color & house paint color, etc}. We had two weeks of absolute pouring rain just before start and the job had to be put off, but he communicated that & it was understandable. He came out with his crew - who were respectful & hard working - and introduced me to Rich, his foreman, so that I would be comfortable {I live alone and this is very important to me when hiring anyone to work at my house!!}. There was one issue with the downspout placement but Rich saw it before I did and had it handled before I even mentioned it. Was very impressed. They also screened in an old lanai, replaced old rotted siding with Hardi Board and added a metal roof over my grill area. It all looks amazing!! It took two days as he quoted, and came in at a great price compared to my other quotes. He even added a dog door at the last minute. My neighbors were so impressed that they hired him to screen in their back deck. I HIGHLY recommend Camo Krew!!

Dry guys roofers are a very honest company! They came out to my home and checked in my attic and determined that my roof itself was in good shape ! I just needed the problem area cleaned of debris and leaves so that the roof could drain properly ! They went ahead and cleaned the area and ran water on roof to make sure it drained into the gutter properly with after cleaning it did! These men were very professional and did not even want to charge me for the service done ! If you need a honest and professional roofer Dry Guys is the company for you! I know when I am in the need of a new roof or repair I will give them a call!

I had him quote me for the roof and the drywall. There was a lot of just going to keep miscommunication about the roof and the interior but he fixed it. Pricing was very on point. They did paint and interior stain area, the stain came through and they had to repaint it. But over all the work was very good and they were quick.

I had a small leak in a corner of my shingle roof. Dario and Barry were very helpful and patient with my endless questions and helped me to understand the repair process. It is hard for the common layman to understand roofing talk but they went out of their way to make sure I knew what they were doing .........and pictures of the finished repairs certainly helped. Both Dario and Barry were very professional throughout the process and finished when they said they would. I certainly recommend Storm Roofing and Repair for any roof repair or replacement.

I was contacted almost immediately after my inquiry on Thumbtack. Kevin came out the next day and emailed quote. I called and left message for him, and he called back within the hour and answered all my questions clearly and concisely, no games. I had received quotes from 4 other roofers and chose Bay to Bay for their no-nonsense, professional, prompt service and communication. The work was scheduled and completed within 3 business days of scheduling. It rained right after the repair was complete, and it was a great test--no more leaking! Other companies wanted to either repair the whole roof, or remove large chunks and replace (flat roof). I was happy with Kevin's explanation that the leak was only in the transition with the shingled roof. The roof was just 10 years old, and this seemed most appropriate. Thanks for great, honest service!

I posted on Thumbtack to find someone to remove the wallpaper in my kitchen and also to texture and paint the walls. C & D responded immediately and showed up the very next day to give us a quote. I hired them, they were able to start the job right away and they did an EXCELLENT job. I have since hired Chad and Daniel for two other jobs (reinstalling our disposer after we got a new sink and then to tear out a wall to install support beams over our fireplace to install our new TV; they also repaired the drywall and repainted the wall). I cannot recommend C & D highly enough...they showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and did everything they said they would do--- they even fixed a couple of little things that they noticed after they got here. C & D respond immediately when I text or call them with questions and/or concerns.

After interviewing 4 roofing companies after hurricane Irma damage , this company was available within two weeks for whole roof replacement. Sales rep is a third generation roofer. His integrity and knowledge shined through . A bit higher than one other quote however I have no regrets. They came on time every day and finished the roof in two days . 10 man crew ! I would of given them a 5 however the dump company they used, ruined one small section of decorative curb and my drive way . Not repaired yet.

KJH did a great job installing my new roof. Kevin is an honest man that did everything exactly as we agreed to. I would rather give my business to a small business than a big corporation. Besides he was 40% lower than the big companies. His crew is very professional and knowledgeable. Would definitely do business with them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
