Patrick Ricciuti is a gentleman and a scholar. Working with him is like working with a French ambassador, coach, professor, and a friend, all in one. I lived in Brussels for four years and tried two other serious immersion language courses in Brussels and in Spa, Belgium. In the end, I found the regular, private tutoring method with Patrick to be far superior and cost effective. Learning a second language for business is hard and takes constant practice over time. Patrick tailors his training to your needs and he takes it seriously. He even visited me in Brussels with his wife once I was fully running my business there! If you want a true Frenchman, with real Parisian/EU French pronunciation, experience in business and life, Patrick is an excellent choice. He is also a foodie and can tell you the most excellent places to eat in Paris and wines to test! I highly recommend Patrick Ricciuti and Allo Paris!

I can't say enough about Jose. He is the most patient, friendly tutor. I've already completed a month of tutoring with him and I feel so much more comfortable speaking. He truly is the best, I'm just so mad it took me THIS long to contact him. If you want to learn fast, with REALLY good techniques, look no further. He's the guy!!!

Professional, warm, and fun. Jeannette has been teaching my 3 children Spanish online for a month and a half now. She is prompt to call every week and has great patience. She's sensitive the kids' style of learning and ages (7, 9, 10). I especially like that she has a book and a set curriculum so that we are quickly on the same page. I have tarea (homework) during the week so the kids are learning between classes. Her communication is impeccable. At the end of every class we take time to chat about goals, what I want them to learn and the best order of operations. She gives me ideas for activities to do with the kids to make the learning more fun and effective. It's too bad we're in a different state. I imagine in person the kids would be super enthused taking her class as she seems very interactive and hands on. As it is, we still have fun and are making the best of it.

Georgette is awesome!!! A rockstar!!! I have a 12 year old honor student (talented and gifted student affiliated with the Cambridge University program and Duke University's academic program) who's been taking spanish in 7th grade since last semester. She has an A but has never been able to string together more than 2-3 words in Spanish at a time lol. After 1 lesson with Georgette, my child was able to answer a very long and complex question posed in English- IN SPANISH!!! And with such confidence!!! I felt sooooo proud!! But not nearly as proud as my dear daughter!! I'm very excited about this wonderful trip we are about to take with Georgette to the land of fluency lol!! She's very informative, knowledgable and flexible; even willing to give lessons via video chat on skype/FaceTime etc whn my child goes away this summer for vaca!! My daughter is very excited, comfortable with Georgette and looking forward to being fluent in Spanish!!

We've met twice so far and I am very pleased with the quality of these tutoring sessions. Maria has been very flexible to meet my special requests regarding the material that we would like to cover and how we would like to study. I appreciate also that she is willing to travel to our home to providing a 1.5 hour lesson to two people of differing Spanish ability. We look forward to many more sessions and much improvement to our Spanish!

Irene is spectacular as a teacher and tutor in all respects. She explains as she goes in a way that tengages the student so you learn the true essence of the language. We just moved to Miami and my daughter is required to know Spanish for school and Irene has taken her from zero understanding to knowing how to conjugate verbs and say sentences in 9 lessons. We are thrilled and will be using Irene throughout the year. She is an excellent Spanish tutor in high demand.

From the very beginning, John was very professional and had a sincere concern for what I needed. He was genuine, and very much involved during the tutoring sessions. Considering my lack of understanding of the material simply because I hate physics; he however, took his time to make it very informal enough to keep me engaged. I expressed my concerns & he was on it and was very eager to make sure I understood the materials. Throughout the sessions, he could see where I was checking out mentally but he continued to encourage me along the way & even found a few ways to make me laugh so that I could refocus. I would recommend John to anyone who is in need of a tutor who is patient and actually cares about the client understanding and passing physics. You will get more than what you paid for. He seems very down to earth so far. He has a pure desire to help succeed. I am actually beginning to understand a lot more than I knew before and that is all a great big thanks to Mr. John Way. Thanks John!

My tutor..Evelyne is a wonderful instructor. She is warm and friendly...but above all she listens to why and how I want to learn French. She has customized our lessons to my needs. I have learned more in four lessons than I ever learned with group classes...on-line tutorials and all those expensive CD collections. Honestly. ..with Evelyne. ..I think I will actually be able to speak French...in France..to a native French speaking person. I'm very pleased with my choice.

Carolina was very sweet with my son for his 1st tutoring session. He was shy at first but I saw how she eased him into doing the work she had planned for him. She gave me good feedback on what my son will need in order to get him ready for the upcoming school year. I am glad we made the decision to go with her and look forward to having her help my child succeed over the summer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
