I was very hesitant to hire a home organizer/decorator, 'I'm too old to do that' I said, but my daughters went ahead and hired Patricia's services as a Christmas gift to help me organize my home. I have collected so much throughout the years and had no idea what to do with it all. Patricia came, listen to my stories and was able to organize my home and find a place for everything making it look like a new place. Iǯm so happy with my home now I think Patricia is very gifted. She was the best Christmas gift ever.

We used Parrin Design Services for our past three rental residences. They are professional, courteous and timely. They provided multiple design consultations, assistance with space planning, and worked very well within our budget. They created a custom upholstered headboard and three unique custom light fixtures for our dining room, entry way and bedroom. All of these are statement pieces, and I receive numerous compliments on. Parrin Design Services upcycled/refurbished three antique pieces to work in our more modern décor. It is often hard to make generic rental properties stand apart and feel like your own. Parrin Design Services excels at this. We highly recommend Parrin Design Service.

I recently hired Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer, to redecorate our home. Judy is extremely creative with a great “design eye” and from the moment my husband and I met her we knew she was the one who would transform our house into a home we would be proud of. Judy gets me and she gets my taste. I gave her my favorite color and decor style and she worked with me on all the design details (fabric, furniture, pricing and quality). She listened to my vision of what I wanted so it was very easy for us to come together and decide on the perfect rug, furniture, light fixture, accessories, accent wall material, paint color, etc. Judy took the time to understand my needs, helped to recommend and coordinate all the trades needed, returned all of my calls and emails promptly and did an amazing job of finding unique pieces for our space. Judy used some of our existing pieces and incorporated them into the design pulling our ideas together into a cohesive plan which gave our home a polished, magazine-cover look. She has impeccable taste, an excellent eye for color, and very creative ideas to make any home beautiful and outstanding which is exactly what she has done for our home and provided excellent service all the way through. I can’t thank her enough! Judy is a pleasure to work with and makes the whole experience relaxing and fun. For all your interior design needs, contact Judith Proctor, Eye of the Designer. You will be so glad you did! Marjorie Jackson, Coral Springs, Florida

I recently had to remodel my kitchen. I called Yoli. She came to my house. Very professional. Took measurements and pictures. Within a week she had drawings and samples of material and came up with a plan to take my kitchen from eh to wow. She worked within my budget. Yoli came up with color and design schemes that I never thought of. Her workers did the job around my schedule. They cleaned up at the end of each day. I had my new kitchen in less than 5 weeks. I am now proud to have people over and display my new kitchen. I highly recommend Yoli to anyone that is looking to give your home a new look. Johnny Basso

I hired Astara Styles via their e-Design service to design my home office in a minimalist contemporary style. The furniture they recommended was exactly what I needed to keep my space free of clutter. They managed to blend the clean lines I like with the storage and utility I need. Plus it was way more affordable than any traditional Interior Designer!

I asked Didier to help me re-decorate my house in a new style. He helped me choose new furnitures, artworks and other accessories that made my house look completely different. He also helped me arrange them in such a way that they would give off a nice feeling of comfort warmth. Overall it was better than what I imagined ! The prices were really affordable as well!

Karen helped us declutter our house full of toys and old clothes and got us so organized that I feel like I moved into a bigger house! Not only can I see the floors in the playroom and all the closets again, but she helped us eliminate all the unnecessary junk and organized what was left so it’s easier to keep sorted as well.

Ann helped me rearrange my living room and create a gallery wall. I have a large living room space in my Chicago apartment, but had my furniture too spread out. Within a few minutes of Ann walking in she had so many ideas of different ways to rethink the space that I had never thought of. We moved things to break up the space that makes it feel homier and thoughtfully designed. And then my FAVORITE part of my apartment now is the gallery wall that Ann helped me craft. With many different frames and textured prints and additions to the wall, it makes for a unique wall in my apartment that people always comment on the second they walk in! Ann is basically the best; she has a fabulous creative eye and energy that makes working with her easy and fun!

Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

My husband and I moved into a medium sized apartment which required interior design expertise to make our apartment fell and look like a well-designed and comfortable living space. Since we were working on a limited budget, it was important that we achieved some expert advice which would minimize our costs for furnishing the apartment. Danielle Davidson of Unique Interior Designs 4U was recommended to us by a friend to accomplish our objectives. The final interior design of our apartment was truly amazing. The layout of the furniture and furnishings was very well designed and the cost for doing this great job was well within our limited budget. We were very impressed with Ms. Davidson's patience and expertise in putting together several alternative plans that were responsive to desires.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
