As a mother of two and a professional I never have the time to decorate my home. I was having family coming over for the first time and I panicked when I saw what my home looked like, everything had been thrown together haphazardly. I got referred to Patricia from friends and what a lifesaver she was. She turned my living room into a pleasant and inviting place, my kids' rooms are now organized and attractive, she even organized my closet and turned my master bedroom into a welcoming retreat. I highly recommend her. She's the best!

We purchased an apartment and furnished it but it never felt like home. We kept buying and trying new stuff but that feeling of home never came in. We never felt we could relax and enjoy our place. This is when we decided to hire an interior decorator. We were supposed to interview 3-4 designers but decided to work with Gus within minutes of meeting him. We are so happy we found him! First he did an excellent job! He listened to what we want and gave it to us. We now love our "home". We enjoy living here and can't wait to keep returning because it is so warm, comfy and us. Gustavo works very differently which is to your advantage. We had a budget that we wanted to spend. Instead of going out and spenind money he first used everything from our place and then purchased very little. Funny thing is that we kept telling him to spend and he kept resisting. We got our place ready for one third of our shopping budget. This means that he paid for himself and still saved us lot of money. I hate writing this part because it will hurt his business but Gustavo is super reasonable with price. I have no idea how he works for so little money. If you are in the market for a good designer get him before he jacks up his proces or gets too busy with clients. He is very friendly to work with. I was out of town and was totally comfortable letting him in my place and go shopping with my wife. He even kept telling my wife how certain things will not work for me meaning he was thinking for both of us when designing and not just her or me. He even went out of his way and got things done after our contract was over. He cameover a few times to help with projects because that is who he is. Honestly Gustave is not a good businessman in fact he is not a businessman at all and that is what makes him so great! We gave him bonus because he saved us so much money and turned our apartment into home but you could see how uncomfortable he was. This is great because then you know that he is not working for money but for reputation. If have not already said so here it is: We were very lucky to have found him and recommend him 100% to anyone. Thanks Gustavo for giving us a home we love!

I was looking for someone to do some interior designing. Yoli fit the bill. She showed on time and was very professional. She came up with several interesting designs. I picked the perfect one for me and I couldn’t be happier. She charged a fair price and her work was excellent. I’m buying a second home down in the Keys and I definitely plan on using Yoli again. Andrea worked with us to decorate/design our completely empty beachfront apartment. That meant selecting everything from furniture to fabrics to painting to a new kitchen backsplash and cabinets. But she didn't stop there-the tile and furniture on our outdoor lanai created an additional (and often favorite) living space. We appreciate that Andrea listened to us and understood exactly what we wanted and then helped us do that within our budget. All this while we were often more than one thousand miles away! Within three months we enjoying our fully furnished space. She has excellent taste and offered ideas and solutions we didn't think of.

I can't say enough about the level of professionalism and attention to detail Maite and her team brought to my year-long home renovation project. She helped me conceptualize every aspect of the home we are building for our family to enjoy for years to come. Everything has come out even more beautiful than I imagined. I can't recommend Interiors by Maite Granda enough!

We were pregnant, and I had a cranky toddler to move to a smaller bedroom as we were getting ready to make a new nursery. Glow Home Interiors was the best for us! I told Andrea I wanted something French and chic, and she really delivered. I loved her idea for old frames as wall decor, and I'm still not over the pinkish coral duvet she recommended to us. HIRE HER. Save yourself some crazy headaches.

My husband and I would EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend Hatley and Thompson. There AREN'T ENOUGH STARS IN THE SKY TO RATE THEM!!!! We hired Hatley and Thompson for our newly constructed home in Florida while still living up north. Everything was done by email and telephone. We didn't have to spend any money or time to travel to Florida at all during the process. The finished product is breathtaking!! Every room from ceiling to floor and wall to wall is absolutely stunning and beautifully put together. We could never have done this ourselves in several lifetimes. Their expertise and extremely good taste and recommendations are priceless. I would trust them to choose everything but they made sure the home suited our likes and wants and they worked tirelessly with us to achieve this and make it our own. They went above and beyond the scope of interior design. They educated us every step of the way and gave us background on even the smallest details of the project. They even went ahead and helped us eliminate an ant problem that they noticed and educated us on hurricanes, insurance, cleaning products, table coverings and much much more. Finally, they are honest, quality people of extremely high character and we are lucky to have met them and feel as we are now friends! We would use them over and over and over!!!!!!

Working with Carol Masters has been a pleasure. She LISTENED to the ideas and style I was looking to achieve, allowing me to work with her looking for materials, furniture etc. without imposing her own personal style. Carol made good suggestions with options and respected my opinions and choices. She helped guide me in the right direction. Carol coordinated the job placing and following up on orders in a timely fashion. After having previous negative experiences with other "pushy" decorators who didn't seem to want to listen but just do their 'own thing,' Carol is definitely a joy to work with.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
