Our child is currently receiving tutorial services for Geometry - Honors and Biology - Honors, for a period of three weeks now, via Skype video. The tutors were able to quickly identify the disconnect and place our child back on track. Our child is back to making all A's and the occasional B. The tutors brought back the fun, laughter, and joy of learning. This is so very important for future academic success. This is a wonderful and tremendous gift for parents. Honestly, we were initially quite skeptical about the innovative video instruction. However, due to our scheduling constraints, we elected to give it a try - as we had no other alternatives. It was the best decision and investment we could have ever made. The tutors are encouraging, and very kind and patient. Most importantly, they know the material, and provide updates of your child's ongoing progress and future advancements. Dr. Michelle represents her company well and is a true professional! She took her time to ask critical questions necessary to select and pair our child with the best tutor for each academic discipline. She also partnered with us in preparation for our child's educational future (high school and college). Chelsea International genuinely cares about your child and you. Mrs. R. I am so pleased with my decision to hire Andres as my college statistics tutor. Andres is kind, patient, and a incredibly talented tutor. I have been out of school for quite awhile; upon beginning my statistics course I felt incredibly lost and unable to complete the work. Andres was able to explain each and every concept I was struggling with in a way that I actually understood. After working with Andres I am fully confident that I will not only pass this class but I will excel. THANK YOU ANDRES!

I can't say enough about Bridge Tutoring. Audrey was amazing for my son. She was so professional and accommodating. His scores for the SAT was up considerably. She was also available at the last minute when he had a surprise test the next day. I would not hesitate to tell everybody how wonderful she was. I have tried other tutors in the past, but none of them compares to her. She is a 10!!!

My daughter is 10 yrs old and in 4th grade. She struggled with math, everything about it, so much and after many homework arguments & trying unsuccessfully to help her myself, I felt it was my job as a parent to give her the tools necessary in order for her to succeed and began searching for a tutor. That search led me to Louise! And although Louise has only been tutoring my daughter for a couple weeks now, my husband & I have already noticed a major increase in her confidence level. She doesn't fight me anymore when it's time to do math homework and it seems as it's all beginning to click for her! Louise is so incredible at what she does and has an almost magical way about her when it comes to identifying individual's needs. Within a few minutes of first meeting her I could definitely tell she does this because she truly cares about these kids and their success. I cannot thank her enough for everything she has done for my daughter and in turn our family! I will continue to use her indefinitely. She has been a Godsend and I'm so greatful for her! Thank you Louise!!!

Dr. Dubler is a skilled tutor that knows that taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports, dance and theater; there are many factors that influence someone’s performance. Dr. Dubler not only shares his passion for setting students up for PSAT and SAT test taking; but he provides applicable hints for students to think about in advance, such as: what to eat the week before the test, and many other tricks to the trade of successful test taking. He will arrive promptly and professionally and will assign homework in between his sessions and encourages his students to do what they can do, with the reality they have their normal extracurricular activities and homework to attend to. His longevity in this field speaks for his abilities to be committed to his passion for SAT tutoring. Dr. Dubler is very experienced and highly educated. He is an excellent match for students who do not mind being asked to explain their train of thought, as his expectation is a high level of interaction. This is one way he reinforces what he is teaching. He is also full on fun magic tricks along the way, which will certainly keep things as he likes them “entertaining.”

Adair's is such of special tutor because his teaching method builds a strong, an personal relationship with the student, he has become my son ally also my strong shoulder. As a tutor has filled a different role than our average teachers (my son is in a top FL magnet school) because he is creating a unique 1/ 1 close relationship. Personal relationships are foundational to any student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. Adair's true passion for teaching is something special and very hard to find these days.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
