Tony helped me with the backsplash tiling in my kitchen yesterday since I did not want to do this alone and did not have all the tools. After having had a bad experience with another contractor before, it was a fresh breath of air to meet Tony and work with him. He is punctual, courteous, super friendly and fun to have around. His work ethics are something you don't see much around anymore: he genuinely cares about his customers and what they need and then delivers. And he is honest to tell you when he can't do something. I have hired Tony to come back next week and do some more work and will recommend him to my neighbor as well. Great guy to have do your projects and his prices are reasonable for any budget.

David and Alex came out to re-attach my master bedroom carpet to meet my newly installed tile floor in my master bathroom. While they were here, I had them also stretch my carpet in a couple of places in both my master bedroom and my living room where it was starting to bubble. They completed all tasks in a timely manner, and moved the furniture as needed themselves. They were very efficient with their work and cleaned up after themselves in every room that they worked. I even picked David's brain about a carpet patch that was done by someone else and wondered how we could get the seam line to disappear a little better. He instantly ran out to his vehicle and brought in a couple of tools to fix that issue as well. David was very professional and very personable, and I would definitely hire him again for any future projects!!

Ariel came in and fixed some broken drywall from water damage, new tile flooring in my living and dining room, and he also opened up and knocked out a wall in my kitchen. All of the work he does is Fabulous. He is very thorough. He came to my house and gave me a free quote and said the work would take two days to complete. He completed all of the work and stayed within budget and time he quoted. I would recommend him to anyone needing some house repairs!

Rafael did a master bathroom floor re-model that involved removing old floor tile and installing new tile. He also removed and replaced the back splash in my kitchen with new beveled subway tile. He did a good job in the bathroom and the new tile matches the rest of the decor perfectly. The kitchen subway tile is aligned well, and he assisted in picking out the best shade of grout. After he left, I noticed that one of the bathroom tiles was a little high, and I called to ask if he would come and replace it. He came over promptly and replaced the tile, and it looks very nice now. I appreciate his responsiveness, and his commitment to making sure his customer is satisfied with the work. I am using him again to re-grout my master bath shower.

Dale took on a very challenging bathroom renovation (which is an understatement) for us in our 65 year old home. This job required expert plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills as well as the ability to lay tile and install flooring. Dale is professional, reliable, punctual, honest, energetic, conscientious, and extremely hard-working. He likes to make sure a job is done the right way, and he attempts to complete tasks in a cost effective manner. I heartily recommend Dale for your handyman needs!!

Julio exceeded our expectations in every way! When we requested an estimate he asked for some pictures to better understand the complexity of the job; I was pleased with the reasonable estimate that we received. Julio kept in contact with us from the day we hired him until the day of installation, even letting us know that he was on his way that morning. His attention to detail is superb. Julio does meticulous work; we are extremely pleased with our stone kitchen backsplash installation. I would highly recommend Julio Barizon for your tile installation needs!

This is a little bit long but I need to tell how we came to get C&B flooring: First, I want to thank C&B Flooring for coming to our rescue!! With tile purchased, furniture moved and schedules cleared, we were stood up by another flooring company who decided at the last minute that they didn't want to do the job! I should have known something wasn't right when the owner, some guy named Raymond, came to give an estimate and after agreeing to do the job the following week, never sent a contract or messages. I sent a message asking for the contract to start and was told I "could write up a contract myself and he would sign it when he arrived to do the job." Then he just never showed up nor answered my phone calls. In a panic with Thanksgiving less than a week away, my daughter reached out to C&B Flooring. Feeling sorry for our dilemma, Gustavo came late that same evening to give us a quote. He promised to have it completed by Wednesday. I was skeptical but what else could I do with our furniture already cleared from 2 rooms and Thanksgiving fast approaching? He also agreed to match the original company's price. Well, we had 3 rooms of tile installed by Gustavo and his team. They worked consistently and quickly to get things done, even though they had to squeeze us in between another job they already had. True to his word, Gustavo and his guys were done by 7:00 pm Wednesday! They even helped to move back large pieces of furniture for us. I can't thank them enough for not only taking on our last minute job, but most importantly, for doing a great job and making our floors look beautiful!!

I am very glad, that I was able to get Bert of Tally's Flooring to come out and do the tile work in my home. He sent in a large team, who worked over Mother's day weekend, to complete our flooring as quickly and professionally as possible. We had a custom design in mind and the floors came out beautiful, as you can see. Bert does all the tile floors for Lowes, so he is absolutely a professional, and will get your job done right.

I had silk drapes that were warping and tearing from the sun and really didn’t want to replace them as they were very expensive and large. It was a very risky and difficult repair that no one wanted to do and Mamu recommended to get rid of Them. Rafeek was able to repair and salvage them. He is a genius who puts a lot of thought and is very meticulous in his work. I was very happy with the quality of his work and the outcome. He did An amazing job. Now I am going to have him do my tile work in my kitchen and outdoor kitchen

I cannot stand when companies do not keep their word, a customer should never have to chase after a company to stand by their word, after my tile installation I am now left having to dispose of the tile which was demo’ed despite the initial agreement that this tile would be disposed of for me, it is going on two weeks and tile is still here for me to dispose of, I’m not happy at all I now have to incur additional expenses for something which was initially agreed upon. Would not recommend. Companies should stand by their word

Darwin and his team turned my drab kitchen into the kitchen of my dreams. No issue that arose (and you know things come up when your renovating your home) was an issue they couldn't handle. He listened to my vision, and helped bring it to life. The fact I was able to use one company to handle everything from the flooring to the cabinets was a huge plus for me. I highly recommend S&T.

We hired John to remove a tile floor on our house that had been improperly installed. John worked us into his schedule and came on time, ready to work. He and his helper worked tirelessly to remove old tiles and thinset in order to bring our concrete floor back to smooth. It wasn't an easy job. John has been very accommodating in working to a mutually convenient schedule as we have a house full of furniture to work around and the entire existing floor must come up. When they left, they cleaned everything up and hauled all the old tile and thinset away. Nice job!!

I hired Vladimir, from FamilyHandyman, to tile my front porch. He was not available when needed, but sent his partner Moises. He spent the entire day doing the tile work and left around 10 that night. I am so impressed by the quality of work and the care he took laying it down. I would hire him again without question. Moises, obviously, loves the work he does, Pat Gardner

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
