Bottom line: This guy knows what he's talking about and knows what he's doing. I thought my Walker Coon Hound was train- proof. Brian proved me wrong- my dog is getting more and more obedient after every session and he loves it. Clickr training with Brian works. I felt a wave of relief after the first session. Overall great 100 percent positive experience. Highly recommend.

I was looking for a trainer that didn't just teach commands but worked with behavioral issues as well and Cliff provided that. He also wasn't just training my dog but myself included and it was a great learning experience.

Wendy is a peach! My "rescued dog" Hunter, a dachshund, is very skitish with people and other dogs, but from the moment Wendy walked into our home, Hunter received her as a friend! That in itself says a lot. After 6 weeks, we have now taken him, with Wendy's guidance, to the local dog park for the first time since we have had him, and maybe the first time in his life, and contrary to my worst fears, he was very well behaved, which I can only credit to Wendy's affectionate and patient dog (and people) training. I would highly recommend Puppy Dog Luv/Wendy Heller for training!

Brianna did an initial evaluation of our 5 month old corgi, Obi. She is very knowledgeable and observant. She asked a lot of questions and really took her time with listening to our concerns and what we ultimately are looking for. She explained that a “one size fits all” approach to dog training doesn’t work.....it’s very individualistic. We look forward to working with her in the future!

Mr. Otazo has been training my 8 month old (huge) puppy for about 4 weeks now, and I am so thankful for have coming across such a caring company as Atazo Animal Services is. I have met most of the employees and they are all so kind to Kane as well as I. Kane is very happy to have them around, he is not easy one and they have had all the patience in the world to help Kane become the best version of himself.

Jillian has been such a gift for us! When we rescued Laika and brought her home she was so gentle and so sweet in the beginning, but she was very stubborn and she quickly became very attached to us, which caused her to become possessive. We thought doing obedience classes with her would be enough, but it simply wasn't. The trauma she went through from being abandoned and having to survive on her own left her with anxiety that we weren't equipped to deal with. Her anxiety paired with her possessiveness led her to start having aggressive tendencies. We knew we needed help and started searching for a training program that fit our needs. The moment we met Jillian we immediately felt confident that we were in good hands. Laika felt comfortable with her from the beginning, which was important to us since we decided to do the boarding and training. Jillian was very informative and immediately saw the potential Laika had and took her in and treated her as though Laika was part of her family. Jillian sent us regular updates via text with pictures and videos, which was wonderful. I loved seeing the progress Laika made throughout the month. At the end of one month we got to visit Laika and we could see a remarkable difference. We decided to do a second month of boarding and training with Jillian and it was during this second month that Laika made leaps and bounds with her training as everything became reinforced. She became much more confident, calm, and learned to stop herself before exhibiting bad behavior. We had an easy transition bringing her home and she's been so good ever since. She listens really well, she loves to continue practicing her training, she aims to please us, and the greatest of all for us is we can now pick up our cats without Laika getting jealous, possessive, and aggressive. We had concerns about her behavior for when we have kids in the future and now we feel comfortable and confident that introducing a baby to our family down the road will be possible. We can't thank Jillian enough for the wonderful job she did with rehabilitating Laika. She helped Laika to heal from her past trauma and guided her to step into her true potential that she continues to grow into each day.

I started working with Mona even before we got our dog, Belle. Mona helped us choose the right puppy for us to get us started on the right foot, and she helped us make a "puppy plan" so that things weren't so overwhelming for us as first-time dog owners. She even went shopping with us at the pet supply store to help us choose what would help us and what we wouldn't really need. And that was before the training even started! It just goes to show how dedicated Mona is to making sure that her clients and their dogs have positive, happy relationships - she thinks of every detail and helps with everything, even if it's above and beyond her job description. Her training was clear, at a good pace, and not too complicated. Belle really responded to her, and she explained everything to us in a way that made us understand Belle better, too. We've left Belle with Mona overnight and we were always confident that Belle was not only totally safe, but also having a fun time even if we couldn't be there with her. I'm only sorry we don't live in the same city as Mona anymore! But we all, including Belle, look forward to visiting her soon, and we recommend her services to all other animal lovers.

Krystina has helped me immensely with my mobility and flexability training. Always showing me different techniques to decompress my joints and stay loose as well as build stabilization strength. The biggest area of in improvement was in my lower back which Ms. Dowdell taught me that its the surrounding muscles like my hips that cause that area to be tight. Just by doing the exercises and stretching techniques a lot of the pressure on my lower back has been relieved and with being a martial artist it really makes a difference!

Nicole is awesome!!!!! I am so lucky to have found her! She has been walking/training/boarding my pup, Winston, for a year now. I work long hours and she comes to walk him and take him for day care. He has also stayed with her while I am away and he loves to go to her home and especially loves playing with her dog, Luna! They have become such good friends, he is always excited to see them!!! She has taught him tricks and he always comes home tired from a day of activity and play! They go on fun adventures, it makes me happy he is so well taken care of when I am not home with him. Nicole is also very trustworthy and knowledgable. She always sends me photos and map routes of walks that always make me smile . She also has great advice if I ever have any issues with Winston. I never thought I would trust someone with my dog the way I trust her. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who loves their dog and wants someone they can feel comfortable leaving their pup with!!!

    About

A trained dog is a loved dog. A trained dog is less likely to show fearful or stress-related behaviors that can lead to even more undesirable behaviors like aggression. I do positive reinforcement-based dog training to provide the best solutions for you and your dog. I offer in-home private lessons for you and your dog personalized to suit your dog's training level and your busy schedule. Another very effective and convenient option is day training where your dog and I train while you are away. A walk is included in this training option. I provide customized, effective training solutions for you and you pet. If you want to give your dog the best of everything, that should include professional training with someone with over eleven years of experience.

    About

Robin and I never like to talk ill about the other dog trainers in our area. What I can say is that as Canine Behavioral Therapists and Master Dog Trainers, we have a great deal of local experience and professional services that we offer each and every client. We have currently trained over 3,000 dogs in South Florida. Before we were allowed to become dog trainers, we needed to successfully attend a three week, "24/7" training program with constant class room instruction and hands-on exercises. Our knowledge was measured by successfully passing an eight hour written test and full day hands-on test. We are required to successfully pass on-going instruction/certification on an annual basis. As I mentioned earlier, we have currently trained over 3,000 dogs (and their human owners) in South Florida. All of this makes us feel pretty good about our techniques and very successful results.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
