We were very happy with the plumbing repair made by Raffaelle. He responded to our request promptly and even with an initial quote. He arrived to the job promptly the next morning and completed the repair for a good value. We will call Raffaelle again when we need something fixed!

Waking up to hear a raccoon tearing a hole in my roof wasn't the best, but Pernell did a great job with my flat roof repair. He and his guys were on time, he maintained good communication, and did what he said he would. Recommended!

My request was simple: fully paint three rooms and several doors plus touch up walls where needed. In preparation for my house to be put on the market, I needed it to show well without investing too much money. Fabian gave great advice, pointing out areas that should be painted and even suggesting a lovely neutral color. He was very accommodating (next day service!) and willing to negotiate a very fair price. His crew was timely, professional, and they clearly took pride in the work they were doing. They expertly painted three bedrooms, multiple doors and touched up walls throughout my house. They also did some repairs on a ceiling and on outside planter boxes. It was a pleasure to have T & F Painting work in my house and they did an excellent job!

Rooms to go told me four separate times that's a sinkhole in my coach could not be fixed. JC Designs fixed it. I had to window treatment companies tell me that my vertical blinds could not be fixed. JC designs fixed them. I had water leaking into my apartment from a water heater upstairs broke. It rotted The bottom of an expensive commode in my living room. I didn't think that it could be repaired. J C Designs repaired it and it looks beautiful. If you need something done right, and at a reasonable price. Call them. You will be happy you did.

Mike came to the house to measure our room for a floor installation, baseboard installation and the install of a new door. He was on time, professional, and very well spoken. Once he had the measurements, we agreed on a fair price and he gave us a written quote with a list of items we needed to buy in order for him to complete the job. We then scheduled the installation which he said would take 2 days. On installation day, Mike showed up with his crew on time and quickly began work. His work is skilled, quick, and very professional. You can tell he has done a million of these floors. He is a craftsman. The job was done as scheduled, within 2 days. Overall, I highly recommend doing business with Mike. He is a real pro, a good guy, and very easy to communicate with... He promptly answers each call or text (something so rare today). Easy decision, I'd use him again and recommend him with ease. He goes the extra mile to do it right. Thanks, Mike!

I think Rick is very qualified and knows what he is doing. Was very conscientious about what he was doing, and was careful and clean. He understands older houses! He responded right away, squeezed me into his busy schedule-and now no more leak. I would definitely hire him again. His price was fair and reasonable. This was to fix an under-the- sink piping that was leaking. I had 2 neighbors come to try and help me-and we couldn't get the leak to stop. Makes a difference hiring a professional. He brought right parts with him to do the repair and got it taken care of quickly.

I was hesitant to call because of no reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism and responsiveness of DIY. I had him put up our TV in our new apartment and run the wiring through the walls. Looks great and didn't take long at all. I will be calling John back to remove and repair the sheetrock when I move out to leave it as it was when I moved in.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
