We hired iPaint USA to paint the exterior of our house. We had three other companies in consideration but Marcelo's professionalism and pricing helped us to pick his company. Marcelo was present everyday with one helper and they finished the job in two days. They were very punctual and very tidy. They did a clean job and all the materials were brought in by Marcelo himself. We would definitely recommend iPaint USA to our friends and family. Best wishes to you, Marcelo! You were a delight to work with.

Words can not even begin to describe how extremely happy we are with work W&B construction did to our home! We recently started a kitchen remodel and floor tile project in our home. We originally did only a search for tile installation as we have family friends who do remodeling projects and thought they would be helping us with our kitchen remodel. We promptly got a response from Gabriel to our request for tile installation and set up a meeting with him and his crew the very next day. Before meeting with him we read the numerous reviews left by very satisfied clients and decided when meeting with him to also inquire getting an estimate on the construction and remodel of our kitchen as well as the tile installation. After meeting with Gabriel and his crew and expressing our visions for our new kitchen, we felt very confident that once we received the estimate from him that we would be hiring them. Gabriel promptly emailed us an estimate that same day and we decided to go with them. They started demolition the next Tuesday! Everyday it was so nice to come home and see all the progress they made. From start to finish it took 2 1/2 weeks for them to complete everything from demolition to rebuilding and tile installation. Gabriel and his crew are very professional and hard working!Gabriel and his team took our visions and made them better than we could have ever expected! We would and will recommend W&B Villa Construction to anyone looking to have any project to their home done!

My wife and I hired Richard Phillips to update our master bathroom and linen closet. Little did we know or expect our 75 yr old Florida cottage required to be striped to the studs, reinforced, floors leveled, doors hung and that's just for starters. Richard's expertise and vast experience gave us great peace of mind. His attention to detail is superb. Richard offered us design ideas and made recommendations and suggestions that enhanced the overall project. Richard took the time to shop with us as well. We have a new fondness for Home Depot. Richard is trustworthy and reliable. During the project we needed an electrician and plumber. Richard arranged that also. We had a few little home repair projects around the house that he gladly fixed for us. The project took Richard 2 weeks. His labor rates are very fair. This guy works nonstop! I would be completely remiss if I didn't mention his wonderful apprentice Jake. He is a hard worker and does a great job. My wife and I love the bathroom and look forward to scheduling our next project with Richard and apprentice Jake. Thanks again guys, you did a great job! Gloria & Ronnie

Handyman Advisor of Palm Beach has been such an amazing experience each and every time I’ve used them, so much so that I wanted to plop positive reviews everywhere and tell everyone. I actually found Handyman Advisor on Yelp by checking out their reviews and booking online. It only took about 30 seconds before my phone rang and the Corey listened to my long list of requests, booked the appointment and his team arrived within an hour. A little background on this…. I’m a business owner and I work from home. My wife and I bought a “handyman special” fixer upper in Parkland in January 2017. I had previously hired a local general contractor to remodel my kitchen and remodel my bathroom and the contractor had walked off the job leaving it half finished!!! There were major drywall repairs needed, plumbing issues left undone, major electrical problems, trim and molding unfinished, my house looked like a hurricane had hit it. Basically after spending thousands of dollars, I still needed a carpenter, plumber, electrician and paint crew to finish. The first visit, Corey sent his two best guys, Randy and David. Together they tackled most of the unfinished renovations within 8 hours! I’ve never seen more competent or skilled handymen in my life! These handyman are absolutely top notch! They had all the tools and most importantly they were highly skilled and experienced. They were able to handle the carpentry work, drywall and texturing, electrical problems, plumbing issues and they even had a pivoting miter saw to do the crown molding. The next day, they came back and finished my remodel! A week later they came back and their paint crew painted the interior and exterior of my house. This made my wife happy and my life much easier and I salute Handyman Advisor for their terrific work. Posting this positive review of Handyman Advisor is the least I can do to say thank you for a job well done. If you live in Parkland or anywhere in Palm Beach County, I highly recommend you call Handyman Advisor.

We hired Rapid Construction to remodel our pool and patio. They helped turn our dreams into a reality! They stayed on budget and remained in contact throughout the project. Staff is professional and they are very organized. Their pricing wasn’t the cheapest but definitely worth the money. I would reccomend anyone looking for a General contractor to give them a call.

Eco restoration installed flooring into my brand new house. One of the most important things in a home renovation, if not the most important thing, is communication between yourself and the contractor. Eco Restoration had amazing communication the entire time. I will definitely consider Eco Restoration for my next home project!

Don't be fooled by Ken's easy going personality. He is a genius when it comes to kitchens. I had received estimates from 4 other contractors for renovating my kitchen. I was deeply disappointed with their lack of work ethic and follow though. From day 1 Ken answered his phone, texts, and kept in constant contact. I was never left hanging wondering if I would hear back from him again. He came in with the design that was amazing despite the limited space in my condo. He treated me with great respect even though it was not a high end / large kitchen, and put in 110% effort into the project. I would not hesitate to recommend him and cannot say enough about how impressed I am with his integrity and talent. You cannot go wrong hiring Ken. Thank you Ken Walker I love my kitchen!!

We performed a major interior renovation - full kitchen, bath, floors, laundry room, front door - to our home in Miami over a 6-month time frame. The company's work was exceptional. Ariel worked closely with us throughout the outset of the project. He brought new ideas that really helped us realize our vision. His crew (in particular Neri) showed up every day, on time, and completed the job in a timely manner. They were very accommodating despite a few surprises in electrical and plumbing, working overtime to meet the project timelines. We're so happy with our home and there's not one thing we would change. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ariel and crew without hesitation for a renovation or new home build.

When we decided it was time to remodel our kitchen we got several quotes and were skeptical of what would be the delivered product from them. Then we got to see a home JVM kitchens had renovated and we were very impressed. When we contacted them they arranged everything in a timely manner, were frank about cost expectations, time frames and the fear factors we could expect to encounter.  Its been 9 months since they wrapped up and I still find myself gazing in amazement at the incredible results. Their cabinetry is hands down the finest quality available. We'd been through a lot of luxury home tours and can say that none of those had the same quality finish work that JVM installed.  Yes, our budget was greater than we first thought, but the cliche, "You get what you pay for" is very true when it comes to creating your dream kitchen, but I should also mention the remodel encompassed all new appliances, a laundry room, den and bar area as well. Bottom line, Jvm kitchens made our dream kitchen a reality. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Starting with a highly detailed costing, the job came in on time and on budget. It looks great and we couldn't be happpier with our home. My wife and I are building a 3000 SF custom home in Southwest Ranches (Broward) and we can both definitely say that Mike is the best architect would could have hoped for (and we interviewed many). He is always available to answer our questions and stays closely in touch with our general contractor to make sure that the building process is smooth and without any issue. As a real estate broker, I will not hesitate to recommend Mike and his team at Prism Architecture to any client of mine in need of a great and affordable architect. Can't wait to finish the house and invite him over for a drink!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
