We have a 7 mth old Boston Terrier (Lucy). I've had the pleasure of having Brian teaching me and helping me to understand her good and bad behavior. Brian's technique is great and helpful. He is professional and knowledgeable. Brian is still working with Lucy and she's still in training, but her progress is terrific. Brian is performing training on site/at our home and always prompt and flexible to schedule and reschedule as needed. Brian explains in detail about the click and treat method which is very effective. Lucy is very responsive to Brian's training and his method is extremely successful! I highly recommend Brian for helping/training the owners to understand their dogs behavior and for any additional help with dog training.

Jose was perfect, very knowledgeable about the behavior of dogs. Patient , understanding and seemed extremely educated on his career.. Was at a loss about what to do with my dog but he gave me the confidence to understand the behavior and taught me how to deal with it. I am sure with time all he showed me will give my dog the understanding to know that not all people are cruel. Thank you Jose you really understood my issues

Mr. Otazo has been training my 8 month old (huge) puppy for about 4 weeks now, and I am so thankful for have coming across such a caring company as Atazo Animal Services is. I have met most of the employees and they are all so kind to Kane as well as I. Kane is very happy to have them around, he is not easy one and they have had all the patience in the world to help Kane become the best version of himself.

I have been taking classes from Dan Ratay with American Idogs since the summer of 2010. I had tried several other dog training classes, but they were always repetitive and dull after awhile. Daniel introduced me to clicker training which was new to me at the time, and it turned out to be a very useful tool. He uses only positive reinforcement (something else that set him apart from the other classes I looked into). How can I take the same class for 2 years now?? Many of his students are returning students session after session, because we always learn something new. Each class is built upon the basics we have learned, but always has a challenging new twist to make it interesting, to keep us thinking, and to practice with the dogs at home. Also, what I really like about Daniel is that he covers the topic of dog behavior as well to help us understand and read our dogs better. We talk about how certain dogs react during class as examples to understand what he is talking about. By doing this, it allows us to apply what we are learning outside of class, where it really matters. And most of all, classes are FUN!!! It is an environment where we can feel free to ask questions because many times, other people can learn from them too. It is not competitive like some other dog training classes, and we are all there to help each other. Every time I go, I have fun and I know the dogs do too.

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

Mona is a natural dog person who has added to her great instincts with lots of education about dogs and dog behavior. She immediately connected with my dog and was patient and also a good leader, and I could tell my pup was more confident and comfortable around her. I would trust Mona with my animals and I would recommend that others trust her, too. Your animals are in good hands with Mona!

We have known Yayquel for over 10 years. She had a special relationship with both of our older dogs, who boarded regularly where she worked. When our dog was 17, we knew she was not going to be able to board with a good experience, and we had JJ come to our home. The love, caring consideration and respect she gave to our "old dog" was amazing. We sent our Tessa to the Rainbow Bridge, and now she cares for our 12 year old rescue Border Collie. JJ knows dogs, and families and the concerns each of us may have while travelling. She will make your vacation or business or personal trip much less stressful and worry-free. Use her!!

Gisela, helped us with our golden retriever . She designed a personalized plan and showed all of us how to patiently train and obtain the best in him. She was great with our kids , included them to actively participate in his training. Gave us pointer in behavior modification for Charlie that is needed for daily activities with him. She was professional, patient, lovable with animals and kids. Only have good things to say about our experience with her and highly recommend her training technique.

I'm so in love with Jossie I will never let her go. Amazingly sweet and caring. Jossie thank you for everything that you have done for me and the dogs. I truly could not say enough wonderful things about Jossie. She went so far above & beyond what I was hoping for. She spent quality time with our pets, took great care of the house & we came home to 2 happy, healthy animals. My two Dobermans were very well cared for and happy while I was gone. I got emails and pictures during my trip with updates which put me at ease during the trip. I would not hesitate to leave them in Jossie care again. She treated them with love as if they were her own fur babies. My dogs 8 months every day supervised by Jossie, before I go back to Germany. I would give it 100 stars if i could!!! I would recommend to EVERYONE!

I hired Maila, aka my dog whisperer, to take care of my dog, Buffy, and cat, Chloe for ten days while I traveled to New Jersey. Buffy, who is 13, is a very temperamental dog and does not like strangers. She is the type to bite the mailman, etc. Chloe is a shy kitty and likes to hide in the closet. Maila met Buffy and Chloe a few days before I left for my trip and they became fast friends. She loved Buffy as if it was her own doggie, and was able to coax Chloe out of her hiding space. I was impressed at how adaptable Buffy and Chloe became to her presence. Maila has a warm and engaging personality – especially with animals. While I was away, she sent me daily updates including videos and photos. I was so happy with her services that I decided to hire her part-time when I came back to Miami to come by and give some extra love to my babies. Maila is reliable and I highly recommend her to take care of your animals.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
