I have known Jackie for almost 20 years and she has always had amazing sense of style and flair. I was lucky enough to have her do an evaluation of what colors look best on me and wow... It made such a difference. Now when shopping, I immediately know which colors to gravitate to and which to completely stay away from. I highly recommend her!!!

Inviting someone into your house to help you decorate is really stressful. This stranger who knows nothing about you is coming into your home to tell you how to change everything to make it "you." Needless to say, I was pretty nervous when it actually got to hiring a decorator. I shouldn't have been nervous! Ann is AMAZING!!! I really just needed help with little nitty gritty things (window coverings, rugs, and arranging a gallery wall) Ann came in and it was like having a friend help decorate your house. She got a good feel for my style and my likes and dislikes and made suggestions from there. We discussed options and she really listened to my opinions. I was afraid that Ann would say, "I'm the decorator, this is how you need to do things" and that never happened! She really understood that this is my home and it needs to reflect me. Ann helped me decide to actually change my accent wall from red to blue and it looks amazing! She has also taken plenty of time to look for curtains and rugs for me. I have e-mailed her many times in a panic about curtains and she always responds quickly and with help. Ann has also helped me realize that decorating is a process and it evolves over time. You don't need to change everything at once. In short: Ann is awesome! She really makes you feel like a friend. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

I’m very pleased to provide my comments regarding Elvin’s performance as a professional organizer. We met through a common friend, who knew of my desperation to organize my home office. My first impression when I met you was; what an intelligent gentleman, so dependable, approachable and honest. I was immediately impressed by your interpersonal skills. As I explained what I wanted in my office, you kept suggesting options that would work for me, increasing my confidence and enthusiasm. The final results left me speechless. I had the office of my dreams, simple, organized, clean, and easy! Yes, everything was easy to find, everything had its space in such a style that it helps me to keep it this way. I very much appreciate what you did in my case and would highly recommend you to anyone. I am thankful for your initiative, creativity, interpersonal skills and your exceptional organization ability. I am a realtor here in Fort Lauderdale. I have worked with David on staging a number of properties I have listed. He and his team are extremely professional and precise with all they do. Using Elite Home Staging has helped potential buyers visualize the maximum potential of space in a home. David's vision and method helped minimize the number of days a home is on the market for. In turn, this has made me and my sellers happy. It is a great business model and continue to use him to further my business.

I contacted Joe regarding getting a fence installed in my townhouse backyard. Joe was kind enough to file the permit for me and guide me through the long bureaucratic process of getting approval from my HOA. When the permit was finally approved, Joe notified me immediately and had the fence completely finished a few days later. The fence came out fantastic and it was done at a very reasonable price. Throughout the whole process Joe was a complete professional and went above and beyond to help us navigate the challenges of all of the paperwork required for the permit and answered any questions I had very quickly. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Joe to anybody I know that needed similar work done, and he'll be the first person I call the next time I need work done to my home.

I wanted advice mainly on changing living room accessories to a new theme. We had 2 hour in home consultation on most of apartment. Then Studio D prepared presentation of 4 different schemes with items linked to buying source. Never consulted interior designer before; this was an easy and limited way to get advice without a big budget.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

      • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
      • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
        • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
      • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
        • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
      • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
      • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
