JR. went above and beyond my expectations. The job grew expidentualy from the initial scope and he did not leave until the issue(s) were resolved. He even took me to Home Depot when we learned that my existing kitchen sink faucet was beyond repair and helped me the selection as well as completing the install. Additionally completed repairs on 4 bathroom sinks. I am really pleased and I intend to contact him in the future for additional projects.

Rafael provided us with a beautiful floor with USF Contract Luxury Vinyl tile planks and did an excellent job. They removed tile in the kitchen and master bath and installed the flooring throughout. Rafael was on time, fair in pricing and did an excellent job. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a flooring installer.

Blew away my expectations! I bought a foreclosure and had to have a lot of work done. I hired this company to do the following: fans and light fixtures replaced, laminate replaced where there was a water leak, appliances taken out and reinstalled, glass shower door installed, replaced faucets in bathrooms and kitchen, custom closets designed and installed, painted multiple rooms and cabinets, installed blinds throughout the whole house, landscape enhancements, refinished and sealed my garage floor, mounted TVs inside and out on our back lanai, installed new locks and handles on doors, put on cabinet knobs and pulls, and replaced the key pad on my garage with connecting multiple car openers. They were fair in price and very meticulous. They will now be my go-to company to fix anything in need!! Highly recommend!

Joe communicated well with me before the job, was punctual, and completed the plumbing job in a professional manner. He even went to purchase an extra part that was needed due to my kitchen's setup. He left the job site clean, and made sure I was happy with the outcome.

I had a slow leak under the sink that ruined my laminate floor in the kitchen and family room. Mark is very knowledgeable about wood floors and was very helpful in my search for the right floor which he installed. His work and professionalism ranks well beyond a "10!" The floors and trim are beautifully done - a definite "wow!" I recommend him highly for any job. Pat

DMG (Josh) and his crew were the epitome of professional remodeling services. Josh scoped the requirement and kept to the plan/timetable. The new open concept kitchen-dining-living room flow once they removed the wall will give us years of enjoyment. His tilers were exceptionally outstanding. They are true tiling craftsman with an eye for their art. I have follow-on bathroom remodel work that I won't hesitate to contract with DMG to accomplish...they are Top-Notch in the home remodel business!

My wife and I purchased a townhome in an upscale area of Amelia Island in Fernandina Florida several years ago. The property required some major improvements on the first and second floors. Scott and Lee's extensive work through New Leaf Construction helped to make positive and substantial upgrades in our townhome's interior design and amenities. A large and unattractive spa pool in the down stairs living space had to be covered and hard wood floors installed, which increased the living space of the property. Also New Leaf's help with installing attractive and functional amenities such as new cabinets in the kitchen area, new downstairs windows, wet bar and patio improvements were executed professionally and added value to our town home. My wife and I found the services to be of high quality and performed punctually and strategically. The work was performed on time, and special efforts were made by Scott Blunck to meet our color and design preferences for all construction and amenities executed by New Leaf. The work performed was executed over approximately two years after we gave New Leaf a comprehensive itemization of priority improvements on the townhome. I would say that overall the work performed was excellent. And, we are considering the prospect of an additional phase of improvements on the property in the near future. We were very satisfied with the improvements made by Lee and Scott.

I am a Realtor in St Augustine. Jorge was prompt in contacting the new owner of the home and meeting me and the owner for an estimate. The work was 10 or so post-closing repairs on a very nice home in downtown St Augustine. Jorge did all the various repairs and replacements on the home to the owner's satisfaction at a competitive price and in a timely fashion. Jorge is the first person I think of for home repairs, but I've seen pictures of his craftsmanship with building homes, installing kitchens, bathrooms, floors, building custom arbors and amazing wood working. His abilty to handle so many different tasks makes him a one-stop-shop.

I have had Granite Transformations undertake two projects in my house. I have had them do renovations to my kitchen and to my master bathroom. Both turned out great. I was very impressed with the knowledge, the ability, and the meticulousness of the installers. Also, the design consultant was extremely helpful in assisting me with achieving the goals for my renovations.

Southern Concepts Contracting has handled a variety of jobs for me. Most recently, they completed a guest bathroom renovation and added a backsplash and cool lighting to my kitchen. The owner, Zeke Stewart, provided awesome guidance on design and product selection throughout the entire process. The final product totally exceeded my expectations! Equally impressive was the manner in which the work done. The owner and employees of SCC were always very professional, reliable, and timely. At the end of each day, they left the work area clean and accessible. I would recommend SCC without hesitation for projects, big and small. Their workmanship and honesty are second-to-none in the industry!

Are you anxious when it comes to where your money is being spent? Did you think that maybe you wanted several different quotes on several types of materials? Want to pick your own slab? Did you want to keep the pieces leftover from your project? If all of those answers are yes, make sure to give Jason an opportunity to provide you with a quote. Jason was with us the entire way through the process. We needed 2 bathroom counters (double vanity, and a guest bathroom), and our kitchen countertops which includes a giant breakfast bar. We went from quartz to granite, and right back to quartz. They used ACE Granite and wow-the customer service there was fantastic as well. Listen to what Jason has to say because it is him, and his brother Chris, and they understand the business and how to save you money. I saved for years to get the money necessary to afford this in our home, and I was not disappointed. The guys instructed me to go with the sinks that ACE was offering vs. purchasing sinks from another retailer due to cost. They were 100% correct, it was by far the cheaper option, and there was no skimping on quality. That "Delta" or "Moen" logo is not important-trust me! Not only was their guidance on the sinks, but Jason was there every step of the way making sure that I knew what was going on during the process through text and phone calls. He was extremely patient, answered any and all of my questions promptly, and was always available no matter how much I felt as though I was being a pain in the butt! Make sure to lay everything out for Jason as far as measurements, photos, edges that you would like for your countertops, visit ACE Granite as many times as it takes, and choose the exact sinks that you'd like from ACE if you want to save your pennies. Also, make sure that you don't have the issues that I did when I ordered my faucets..I had to get specialty drains that weren't there on install that gave me a slight hiccup that lasted several days without being able to use my sinks, so make sure to plan ahead. If anything, get an estimate time of how long the install will take for the countertops, and have your plumber jump-in directly afterwards to make sure you're hooked up and ready to go same-day! Bottom line, Jason, his brother Chris, and their boy John...their work speaks for itself. Outstanding customer service, and attention to detail. Wonderful guys!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
