The light fixture in my kitchen went out. I went on Thumbtack to try to find someone to come out and replace it. EJ responded within minutes and we had an appt a few days later. He asked me to purchase the fixture that I liked to save me time/money from him going to the hardware store to get one. He arrived on time, was very nice, and replaced the fixture efficiently. I will definitely use EJ again in the future.

Rafael provided us with a beautiful floor with USF Contract Luxury Vinyl tile planks and did an excellent job. They removed tile in the kitchen and master bath and installed the flooring throughout. Rafael was on time, fair in pricing and did an excellent job. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a flooring installer.

Ron, your work is stellar! You bring a conscious, fully present conversation into every project that we have worked with you on! You have always exceeded our expectations and encouraged us to see beyond the limited view. Landscape design can be cookie cutter. What you offer is a “feel of what the land wishes to express” that matches what the landowner “wishes to allow to be seen.” You facilitate this process through a dialogue of creative discussion that includes listening and responding to the landowner – which takes time to discover the beauty that is ever present. If you are a landowner who sees potential in your green space, work with Ron to discover the beauty that widens your current field of view. Yes, it is a process of discovery. Otherwise, you end up with “cookie cutter.”

In my opinion, Melanie Harley was born to be a decorator/ designer. She has not only the credentials to do this profession well but she has just plain natural talent which is necessary to be good at it. Designing presents many challenges that must be overcome. My experience with Melanie was a challenge for her to be able to work with me because I thought I new something about decorating. I kept throwing my ideas at her and trying to do my own brain surgery. Big mistake, she was able to convince me in a tasteful manner to trust her judgement. She had a total design worked out and I must say I couldn't be more pleased with my living room. We are working now on the kitchen. Melanie was patient with me and taught me a lot about color, balance, and many things related to how to achieve the professional decorated look that I wanted. The hardest thing for me was to turn loose of the reins. I am so glad I did. And am so proud when friends and family see the changes. She truly has a passion for what she does and will not settle for for less than perfect. Most people don't realize what a professional decorator has to do to get it just right. I never did. She not only stayed within my budget she spent less than I would have because of her untiring dedication to get the best for the least. I am fortunate that our paths crossed.

Michelle was awesome! She understood the aesthetic we were looking for right away and found perfect furniture, art, and decoratives items for our living room, kitchen, and dining area. I got the look I wanted and even more, as Michelle brought her experience and expertise to the project. She came up with ideas I could have never thought of (even with the help of Pinterest). She connected us with local professionals that were able to include woodworking and painting projects that make our space unique. As a young couple in our first home, she was also very mindful of our budget and found us what we wanted within our price range. She made our new house into our home and I am so happy we found her!

First off, I would like to start by saying that if you want a job done, Mr. Tivey is your guy. His dedication to fulfilling all aspects of the job, and performing the job professionally, is quite rare in comparison to other contractors that I have used in the past. He loves what he does, and he genuinely loves to see a job well done, and ultimately see a very happy homeowner. Mr. Tivey is approachable and very knowledgeable, he will guide you in decision making and will communicate very well all of your options and potential budgets for each project. He gives great advice, and will advise you on other projects in your home, even if it is a job that you plan to do yourself. He can do all types of work. He will hire sub-contractors if needed, but don’t worry, he will always roll up his sleeves and do the hard work himself if possible. He will bust his you know what to make sure you are satisfied. I have hired him twice, the first being a phenomenal job on cutting through a concrete wall in my attached garage, to add a door leading to my kitchen. The second job was adding a central heat/air vent to a room that did not have a vent at all. I know neither of those jobs sound very big, but trust me they were very complicated and detailed jobs, and Mr. Tivey did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him due to his commitment, great work ethic, and the fact that he will be fair to the customer in all phases of planning, and performance of the job. The greatest testament of his character is that during the above mentioned door job, my kitchen floor was damaged. Upon his own discovery of the damage, he immediately began planning to lay down new replacement planks, and repaired my floor with no additional charge, all with no griping required from me. I'd like to see another contractor do that! I plan to continue using Mr. Tivey for all of my home needs. Trust me, if you are reading this, and are trying to make a decision on a contractor, let this review and the many other great reviews he has received, seal the deal! Hire him today!

DMG (Josh) and his crew were the epitome of professional remodeling services. Josh scoped the requirement and kept to the plan/timetable. The new open concept kitchen-dining-living room flow once they removed the wall will give us years of enjoyment. His tilers were exceptionally outstanding. They are true tiling craftsman with an eye for their art. I have follow-on bathroom remodel work that I won't hesitate to contract with DMG to accomplish...they are Top-Notch in the home remodel business!

About a year an half ago New Leaf Construction renovated my kitchen. His company did an excellent job. There was very little clean up. Since am home alone I felt very secured. That is the main reason I have hired them to do my bathrooms. They were slow in getting started with the kitchen. But with scheduling the bathroom work they are moving alot quicker. I would recommend them to my friends knowing they will be very pleased with their work.

Excellent in all categories! Katherine listens and really tries to meet your particular need. Some decorators won't take on medium or small projects. I'm glad Katherine does what she does the way she does. The service is very affordable!

I went to Zach looking to have my kitchen countertops upgraded and some light renovation work. He answered all of my questions and helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to have done. His work was quick and professional and fairly priced. The finished product is better than I could have imagined and I know it wouldn't have been done as quickly or as beautifully if I had not hired Zach to get the job done! I'll definitely be using him for my next remodel job, no doubt! I would recommend him to anyone looking for quality kitchen and bath work.

Crosier Glass by Design turned my kids bathroom into an underwater aquarium. He did an amazing job and my children LOVE it. It's easy to clean and very reasonably priced compared to a typical tile remodel. The best part is that the image can be changed out for something else when the kids get older. I would recommend it to anyone.

I was remodeling my living room recently and decided I wanted to do something with that awful popcorn ceiling. After doing some research online, I found this company Stretch Ceiling Concept. After calling them and setting an appointment, they went over their product with me. There are many colors and designs to choose from. So I made my decision on what ceiling concept I wanted, received a quote and then the work began. Fast, clean, efficient and detailed is how I can describe Stretch Ceiling Concept. It was a pleasure using their services and I would highly recommend them.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
