Kate O. says, "I normally don’t leave detailed reviews like this but credit is due where credit is due and I know others in Jacksonville could benefit from this affordable and QUALITY workmanship. Our house was built in the 1950’s. As soon as we moved in we began having plumbing issues; showers not draining, backups in our tub, toilets not flushing properly, etc. We had multiple plumbing companies come out (costing us a couple thousand dollars) and unclog/jet our sewer line, before being told that our sewer line was 50+ years old and basically deteriorating. We had no choice but to replace it. We received a $4K+ quote from a plumbing company and were stressing. My husband decided to do the job himself since we couldn’t afford to spend 4K and needed a solution, fast. I started searching for a handyman that had experience with replacing sewer lines and got connected with Arthur via a neighborhood Facebook group. Arthur came over, explained exactly what needed to be done and assured us he would be able to assist my husband in fixing the issue. He was a total pro, never left us hanging, and didn't drain our wallets either. No bs, just a solid, affordable job. He was always on time, communicative and professional. His work ethic is insane! Our sewer line has now been replaced and our front yard is back to normal. We're seriously so grateful!! If you need someone reliable and affordable to do ANY sort of projects around your house or yard, I highly recommend Arthur. We already have him working on other projects and could not be more pleased!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does countertop installation cost?

The national average for countertop installation is $2,147, but this cost can fluctuate depending on the type of countertop you want. Countertops made out of granite, marble, quartz, laminate, soapstone and even recycled glass will all have different costs.

The color and patterns may also have an impact, particularly you choose a natural stone with rarer colors or patterns available. The size and type of finish all play a role, too. Keep in mind more customized edges, complex shapes and cutouts will add to the cost.

To understand how much your new counters will cost, talk to contractors and countertop installers near you. Request free estimates so you can properly budget for this project.

How long does countertop installation take?

Countertop installation generally takes a couple of days, though some companies say it could take less than one day and closer to a week. It all depends on the demand the pro is dealing with.

If it's a remodel job, then it will take time to remove the existing countertop. The pro will then need to make cutouts for things like sinks and electrical outlets. After shaping the countertop in their shop, they will bring it in — typically in several sections — and place it and seal it. After fitting sinks, outlets and appliances into the countertop, they will seal the seams.

When you're requesting price quotes from countertop specialists, ask them how long it will take to install your new counters.

What's the most durable countertop?

Countertops made out of natural stones — such as granite and quartz — are the most durable. These materials are nearly impervious to heat, knife cuts, scratching and staining.

Before committing to a countertop material, contact local countertop installation pros on Thumbtack. They can help you understand the pros and cons for each type as well as the cost.

What is the most affordable countertop?

In general, ceramic and laminate countertops are the most affordable options. Ceramic tile countertops cost approximately $11-$18 per square foot, and laminate counters cost an estimated $27-$34 per square foot.

Laminate counters come in many colors and textures. They often mimic more expensive materials like granite or soapstone.

Ceramic tile countertops are somewhat DIY-friendly for homeowners who want to handle their countertop installation. However, you should have some experience setting tiles before you attempt this option.

Which type of countertop is best?

The best type of countertop for you depends on your budget and design preferences. Granite counters are popular because they’re elegant, durable and difficult to replicate with synthetic materials. Granite wears well and requires very little maintenance. When it’s treated with a quality sealer, it’s almost maintenance-free, as well.

While granite has been a top choice for kitchen remodels over the years, you have a number of other choices, as well. Here are some of the benefits of different types of countertops:

  • Ceramic tile: Affordable and DIY-friendly.
  • Concrete: Durable, scratch-resistant and customizable.
  • Engineered stone: More stain-resistant than natural stone and easy to clean.
  • Laminate: Affordable with many color and design options.
  • Marble: Beautiful appearance and heat-resistant.
  • Stainless steel: Stain-resistant and easy to install.
  • Quartz: Variety of colors and design.
  • Wood: Warm and beautiful appearance, with a variety of wood types to choose from.

When contacting countertop professionals near you, you can also ask for their advice on which type of countertop will work best for your budget and goals.

What is the most durable type of countertop?

Quartz is one of the most durable countertop materials. It's made of crushed quartz stone and polymers to create a tough surface that looks like natural stone but is extremely durable.

What is the easiest countertop to maintain?

Laminate is one of the easiest countertop materials to maintain because it’s non-porous and easy to clean with mild soap and water.

How can I save money on countertops?

Saving money on countertops is possible. Here are some ways to cut costs:

  • Stick to materials that are below your budget (think: laminate or tile).
  • Shop around when choosing materials and hiring a pro (get estimates from at least three different professionals).
  • Keep the extra costs (plumbing hook-ups, sinks, faucets, etc.) in mind. In some cases, you may want to handle these aspects separately.

Talk with a local countertop installation pro about how to keep your countertop costs down. They may have suggestions about which lower-priced materials will meet your needs without sacrificing style.
