Cliff truly changed my life because now my dog does not pull on the leash and does not jump at guests when they come over. It has only been 2 days since our first session and I have seen a dramatic change in my lab. I highly recommend him! He definitely is worth the money! Great dog trainer!!!

When my Lab was younger he didn't want to eat regularly. Rosie combined training with dog food to make it a good experience for him. Rosie's own dog, Hanna, is one of the better trained dogs I have met and her Hogan helped so many doing his therapy work. Rosie is right up there with the best. She is a natural.

We can't thank Carol enough for helping us with our dog Sandy! We were at our wits end until she came to our home and showed us ways to calm her isolation anxiety and keep her mind occupied when we leave the house. Now we are able to leave the home without causing stress for us or our pets! You may not need a dog trainer all the time - but if you do - Carol is definitely recommended!

Kathy was great. I learned a lot about our dog and how to continue the training she taught me. I had experiences with other dog trainers and was unimpressed. Kathy knows her stuff and was a pleasure to work with.

I can't say enough about Ashley!! She has been grooming my dogs for about 8 years and I honestly couldn't be happier!! She is always punctual, very caring and is a master groomer! Ashley truly loves what she does and is meticulous when grooming our Golden retriever. She is also an exceptional dog trainer for those of you looking for help in the manners department! 😉 Maggie enjoys her spa days! It is rare in this day and age to find someone who is honest, kind and trustworthy...Ashley is certainly one of those people. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great groomer!!

Yes Dog Training has been a God-send. Stuart is great with our dog, Molly, and knew just how to address some dominant behaviors we wanted to correct. He also came very last minute to take care of her when we went out of town for a couple of days. Molly loves him and we love that he is trustworthy and responsible.

I adopted a one year old Boston Terrier mix who is extremely energetic. I forgot what it was like to have a young dog. Needless to say, I hired Kelly and have been so impressed. First of all, she is extremely professional, enjoyable, no nonsense and always punctual. She has a common sense approach to dog training and the results have been great. I would recommend her to anyone, as she has only proven to provide more than I ever thought I could get.

Dave has been fantastic! I recently adopted a small dog who had been abused and is very afraid of men, and Dave has already made significant progress with him after only two sessions. Dave teaches through positive reinforcement and the reward system, and my dog has already learned so much. It is really helpful that he is able to come to my home to do the training. He does a fantastic job of communicating to me what he is doing, so that I am also learning so much about how to communicate with my dog to keep the learning process going. We are currently doing an hour long session twice a week, but Dave gave me a few options that he thought would work best. Highly recommend!

I contacted Bob for help with my two dogs because one of them had gotten very aggressive with other dogs and the other dog was constantly barking at people and dogs, all the time! Bob talked to me by phone before the appointment about the dogs and quickly scheduled a time to come to my home. He spent a lot of time with me my first training session, asking questions, observing me with my dogs in/out of the house, and then gave suggestions about how to change their routine, establish a leader role, and how to deal with aggressive behavior. Bob's experience, ease with the dogs, and helpful hints changed both of my dog's behavior in the first session! Bob asked that I continue to follow his suggestions during the week and he would check in with me to see how we were progressing. I liked that he was encouraging, knowledgeable, and willing to follow up by phone before the next training session. I felt comfortable calling him and asking for help that week, when I wasn't able to deal with an aggressive dog situation. I would highly recommend Bob to anyone having difficultly with their dogs. He is a natural with animals and has a lot of practical experience to share. I wished I had worked with him earlier and will continue to meet with him weekly for individual training with the dogs and then advance to a group training class he runs on the weekends. Thanks Bob for all your help!!!

If you are reading this review one thing is clear you love your pet and want the very best for them. I can attest that Bijan and OAR Dog Training is it! My pet completed her training program with Bijan in December of 2017. Choosing a dog trainer was not easy! Thankfully Bijan came HIGHLY recommended by my dog walker. After reading reviews and having an initial phone conversation with Bijan I knew he would be the perfect fit for my pet. His depth of knowledge, enthusiasm for what he does and commitment to you and your pet is clear from the get go. My favorite part of the program was seeing the immediate progress Bijan was able to facilitate with my WILD, anxious, frantic, all over the place little pit bull. His patience, technique and persistence were impressive. My doubt (in my pet, not Bijan) was immediately erased. My relationship with my dog has been changed forever. I can confidently interact with her correcting undesirable behaviors, giving commands and always feeling that the tools Bijan gave me are reliable! Bijan and his programs exceed a 5 star review.

Carlos is an awesome canine trainer. He improved the relationship I have with my dog. I experienced the improvement after the first session. He spend a lot of time explaining the dogs behavior & taught me how to respond to each behavior. I now have an obedient dog while maintaining a balanced relationship. He has so much knowledge & experience. I did not realize my counter productive behavior until our sessions. I recommend Green to Alpha for all new dog owners.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
