As this was our first go-around without our mother who ran the best Christmas kitchen ever, we decided to look into catering which then led us to the "private chef" concept offered by Jeffrey Sternberg who owns and operates Rosemary and Thyme Catering. Jeffrey was one of 3 caterers who offered their services through Thumbtack, and right from his online presence, we knew that Jeffrey would be the one who would come through on the home-cooked feel we were seeking. One phone call led to an invitation to his home where we were regaled with samples of his work ... now that is service for you! Planning out the meals was a collaborative effort where we told Jeffrey about all our traditional fare over the 3-day feast with Jeffrey being most accommodating to our habitual dishes but all the while making recommendations here and there which we gladly accepted ... it was a very easy and enjoyable process. Everything was delicious, truly surpassing our expectations. There were even several batches of shortbread made up for our inspection before choosing the version that best matched the type of shortbread we were accustomed to. The cauliflower and celery casseroles were actually better than we had ever made ourselves and the filet roast of beef for the day after Christmas was without a doubt the best we'd ever tasted. If there was any negative to be found, it was simply in that there was way more food prepared for us than we could ever expect to eat ... we froze the leftovers and are still enjoying the odd Jeffrey meal ... talk about getting excellent value for your money! The only exception to the quantity was the gravy that only lasted the one meal of Christmas dinner. And Jeffrey also surprised us with plenty of extras like a 4th appetizer that we had not ordered, dips that we had not ordered for the appetizers, and mayo and mustard spreads for our sandwiches, and the killer was an extra turkey roasted in the oven in case we did not end up being fond of the grilled turkey that he recommended. The one hitch was that the re-heating instructions did not specify "convection" or take into account that all six dishes were to be reheated in the oven simultaneously, so the food was not ready when we were led to believe it would be, but it was well worth the wait in the end because everything was outstanding. Service, service, service ... that is what Jeffrey is all about ... and he really knows what he's doing ... you can just relax or else spend the time you save in the kitchen fretting over more interesting Christmas activities ... Thanks so very much to you Jeffrey ... you saved the Holidays for us ... the best to you and your family in 2016. Lorri H. Jan 07/16

Let me begin by stating that "five stars" isn't high enough a rating to post for Chef Tim and company. From first introduction to the last bite, his team and professionalism completely astounded both myself and party guests. His first meeting to discuss both menu options and floor plan layouts was refreshing and further emphasized his sincere commitment to bring the best to all of his bookings. Every step of the process was stress-free from course choices to clean up times. My guests raved over his quality of fresh ingredients which were aesthetically beautiful in the way they were dressed on the plates. Our sushi presentation was incomparable as was the sushi chef's personal creations. His staff was both insightful and knowledgeable of the ingredients being served, which was of great importance as many of my guests had severe food allergies and strict dietary needs. Our bartender was sophisticated and quite the experienced mixologist which ultimately won over several of my family members (which I may add can be even more finicky than our guests). The best part, when the party had ended there was only a spotless kitchen and a fridge full of perfectly store leftovers. His staff even took out the garbage and recyclables. TIM should stand for Tantalizingly Impressive Menus. I will definitely use Chef Tim again for my future parties and many of my guests have already asked for his information.

Imagine a caterer...who sets up outdoors amid cars and campers, serves 35 people all their meals during 3 days of meetings...happily fields dietary and take away plate requests, keeps hot and cold drinks always at the ready, serves gaily decorated buffet breakfast and lunch, prepares AND delivers boxed lunches to a beach meeting...unobtrusively plate serves dinner DURING meetings, pours the wine each of us had brought so our glasses were never empty...who made our retreat in April truly remarkable. With true passion and expertise. And a concern and vested interest in a perfect function that equaled ours. All with smiles and laughter. That caterer would be Stacey and her enthusiastic helper Tori. Stacey was instrumental during the planning. We presented Stacey - with just three weeks notice - the concept for a backyard retreat. She propelled it into a classy, organized function. If you, too, are perfectionists, you can safely let Stacey do the worrying for you! When she left, we felt like our friend was gone. Thank you, Stacey, for the healthy and varied dishes you created. Definitely the highlight of our retreat!

we had contacted Julie of Jx3 Events to run our daughters Bat Mitzvah. We had left most of the details to the last minute and had nothing planned. JX3 came on and was able to put the entire party together in a matter of weeks. When we walked into the room we were blown away.it was awesome beyond anything we had planned for. The dj took control and ran the party from the moment we got there.Everyone raved over what a great party and how much fun they had.Thank you Julie for making everything special and stress free. Even the venue commented on how great they were to work with

Marc was FABULOUS! He was very easy to work with and very flexible in creating a menu for diverse Jewish family group of 16. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. Chicken, brisket, sweet potatoes, kugel, veggies: All outstanding! Marc provided the linens and a server. (The kids wanted to go home with Crystal.) Part of the meal was served at the table, part was buffet (served by Marc and Crystal) - all to rave reviews, including the four children under 8. Last minute, we requested a sugar free dessert for a diabetic family member which became a big hit. Marc and his team did the clean up and left our condo's 'Club Room' spotless. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
