I'm new to thumbtack. David was one of the first people to respond about my job request to have my shutters replaced on my home. I found David to be very prompt and maintained good communication with me through the process of the work/job. He even gathered all the supplies I needed with the costs out of his pocket and I reimbursed him at the end of the job. Of course he did address me with different parts and costs before buying them so that I would have a choice in what my old shutters were going to be replaced with and the reimbursement costs. He works for a reasonable amount and gave me a quote the same day he came to check out the job. He was very informative and cordial. I would not hesitate to recommend him to any of my friends or family. I felt very comfortable with and trusting of him. He shared with me a wealth of information on other areas of home repair and suggested work that I could do on my own to save costs considering money it tight these days. I even noticed he took the time to put caulking to seal off one of the outside outlets on my home. The old seal had corroded with time. This was not his responsibility and I appreciated him doing this for me with no expectations. I noticed this after I looked more closely at the installation of my shutters. Good stuff. David's your guy. Look no further. I appreciated him and his work and I’m sure you likely will too.

Jason was very knowledgeable about our projects and came to the right conclusions when setting a course of action. our front door was installed incorrectly, Jason repaired and installed it within an hour and it now closes and operates perfectly. I also bought an inside bathroom door to be installed, he found an error in construction and I returned it for another one at Home depot, which he installed and it works perfectly. Jason also framed our two bathroom mirrors and it looks beautiful! this was all done in one afternoon at a very reasonable price, My wife is over the moon with his professionalism and work quality. No, he hasn't paid us for this review, but we are hiring him to remodel our bathroom starting Monday!

Excellent service all around. I was given expert advice and multiple options to accomplish several repairs and upgrades. The estimates were provided in a timely fashion and the work was performed within the estimated window. I highly recommended their services, quality of work and expertise on flooring, walls, painting, electric, plumbing and many small repairs. I am a highly satisfied customer and will continue to do business with them.

I had to have the sheathing on the exterior of my house replaced along With some of 2x4s and beam. He made sure to protect the house from further damage since it was raining and couldn't start work right away. His price was good, I think it was the best price of any licensed contractors. He will be returning soon to re-roof my house as well. Michael was on the job the whole time so he's the only one you need to deal with which is a huge plus

Mr. Meadows is a very respectful and very informational and knowledgeable contractor. Not a pushy type person. He has tried to help me and my wife save on a project that has been a nightmare for us. I would recommend him to everyone. Not trying to put him on a pedestal but one thing is he took us to a cabinet shop and we have not seen the product yet but if it turns out the way it was designed I did my research and those cabinets at Home Depot would double in cost. Good company and after things are done I will put another review on this site just to let you know how this project turned out. Thanks, Terry

Christian has exceptional design capabilities and is professional to work with. He listens to the clients needs and completes work in a timely manner with attention to detail. He is proficient in his field and is hands on throughout the process. I have personally used his services for home and remodel design, light gauge steel trusses and light gauge wall (interior and exterior) fabrication. The fact that he can design a product, produce signed/sealed plans and has the machines/equipment to fabricate the product makes him a one stop shop.... Unique, Efficient and a pleasure to work with. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
