In a state where every contractor is a lying thief it was a pleasure to work with John. He came on time, fixed my AC quickly and charged me less that half of what any of those other companies charge. I HIGHLY recommend him. Excellent work.

Edward did a great job for me. He was very timely in his initial response and quoted a fair price that he adhered to. He showed up on time with all materials (I hate it when contractors ask you to buy materials) and did a very clean and thorough job. Would definitely use in the future as it's very difficult to find reliable contractors in S Florida.

I had several, small to medium size jobs, needed to be done in my home (drywall, trim work, cabinets). Juan Carlos and his team were professional, responsive, and kept an extremely clean job site. They finished all work when they said they would, and they did the work the right way (no shortcuts). I will be using Five Star Finishes again for other jobs in my home (bathroom), and highly recommend them to anyone.

Nigel is courteous, prompt, and does good work. We had him install regular windows and remove crank windows in our bedroom. We intend to hire him for other projects down the road. Don't hesitate to contact Nigel for your home repairs. After dealing with other contractors who never kept appointments or fell off the face of the earth, or price gauged, it was refreshing to find a good person to work with.

Worked with Bob from Opticks Painting and my experience could not have been better. After Bob and his team painted my apartment, my my girlfriend was so impressed with the work that she hired Opticks to paint her condo-and was delighted with their work. In my previous career, I often worked with commercial contractors and painters and am quite familiar with how they price out work, and the kind of games that are too frequently played in NYC. Bob and his team were professional, clean and really decent to deal with. I would 100% use them again.

Danillo is a skilled, smart, caring, and careful contractor. He came to work for us when our first contractor injured his back and could no longer work. Our home had been demolished. Slowly and carefully Danillo put it back together again. He did everything: the plumbing, the tile work, the painting, and the carpentry work. And he did it all while respecting the house and the people who live there. His past history of building g houses in Brazil served him and us well! His charges were very fair. In addition he is a most pleasant person. I recommend him highly!

If you are looking for a residential/commercial contractor to provide quality remodeling services in the South Florida area, then you should consider calling Mr. Luis Briceno of the Done-Rite Handyman Service Company in Boca Raton, Florida. Luis is an extremely hard working and efficient professional that you can count on to provide high-quality and reliable services at a fair and reasonable price. I recently had him renovate my home by replacing the entire floor throughout the home with porcelain tile and installing brand new kitchen cabinets that included a complete re-design of the kitchen layout. He also rebuilt the bathroom by removing the old bathtub and antiquated wall tiles and replacing them with a custom built shower with sliding glass doors and brand new tiling from floor to ceiling. Luis and his team work independently throughout the home performing all electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, stucco and painting work to eliminate the need for having to deal with more than one company to complete a project. He is extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating in all aspects of operations. I highly recommend contacting him if you are interested in remodeling your home or office.

MVM is a licensed contractor.but they aren't the ones doing the work. It's a front for them to allow another company, Olaf Commercial Service to use their licensed status in order to portray themselves as licensed. The person who responded to my quote request through Thumbtack was Miquel. He portrayed we was a rep of MVM and presented a contract from MVM. However, The first time I had to make a payment Miguel asked that I make the check payable to his drywall company, Olaf commercial. We agreed on a price for my entire project which included gutting and reframing a bathroom and gutting a kitchen and installing cabinets. He asked for a $1200 down payment upon signing the contract with MVM. After he finished removing popcorn ceiling, he asked for more money. He kept pressuring me for more money. To date, I have paid him $6000.00 and all he has done is removed the popcorn in my living room and replaced a 72x80 area of a wall with wood pieces I had. The last straw came this week when he asked for more money when I gave him an additional $1500 on the day he had been last to me house. On this day, all he did was move furniture and install a ceiling fan. For having received $6000 in advance of doing the most major work (which has yet to be done), it felt like I was being given the shake down. These people are a fraud. They want money and more money without having done the work. I have so much renovation going on at my house that I did not have the energy to fight Miguel over money. He took advantage. He had not finished removing the popcorn in my ceiling and hallway when I left tuesday of this week. Today I hired another contractor who finished the ceiling work in the common areas for $600. I only wish I had found them first before I relied on Thumbtack to refer a reputable company. DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE.

I had a great experience with Bill Monroy at Gemco USA.. He came into my project in the middle of it after I fired my first GC. Bill was professional, courteous, reliable, and efficient. Trust me hiring the wrong contractor is a nightmare ... But you cannot go wrong with Gemco, their expertise combined with speediness is unrivaled.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
