My husband and I recently moved into a house that was a foreclosure and the guest house had a strange smell. Even though we completely re-painted the walls, ripped and replaced the old carpet, ran the faucets, we couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from and it was very frustrating. John came out to our home to take a look and he was very knowledgable. He made suggestions about the steps we should take in getting rid of the smell and finding out where it was coming from, concluding that the gist of the smell was from underneath the stairway (in an un-vented closet). It also might have been combined with the fact that we put new carpet on the stairwell which had a new smell to it. Because we've only lived here 2 weeks, he recommended to wait and take some steps (de-humidifier under the stairs), airing out the place on a cool night when the humidity is low outside, etc. I'm happy to say that the smell is almost gone, and I probably would have spent hundreds of dollars on mold testing with another company, when it really wouldn't have helped or was not necessary. Granted, if the smell is still here in a few weeks and I sense that something still isn't right, I will be calling John to take further action in doing more investigating and perhaps testing. I'd highly recommend him.

Both carpet cleaners were friendly and respectful of my home. But quote for cleaning and stretching carpet wasn't as planned. The stain guard smelled bad,or something in cleaner left carpet smelling like wet dog. (I don't have a dog.)Only had one room carpet cleaned, they were quick, arrived on time. Would use again if quote on paper and solution smelled better.

I was in a total bind. @ 7pm I found out I needed my carpets cleaned by 9am the next morning for an appraisal! I went to thumbtack after not being able to get in touch with the carpet cleaners that I normally use. Todd responded immediately, gave me a set price and stuck to it, even after realizing I was a little far out of his service area. He showed up for the appointment ready to get the job done. Both guys were professional, friendly and even took the time to explain the chemistry of his work, which was fascinating to me. The guys did an exceptional job. I am more then happy with the way everything turned out from start to finish. I can not recommend these guys enough! I will definitely be calling them back, even if I am out of your service area, next time I will book in advance. Thank you!

Excellent and reliable service! I have used many carpet cleaning services but The McConnell Brothers Carpet Cleaners have been the best that I've used. They were on time and extremely professional. They addressed my concerns about a particular stain that had persisted through previous carpet cleanings and they were able to completely remove the stain. It's been 3 weeks and the stain has not returned! The results were immediate and impressive enough that I requested they clean my tile. It has never looked better. My home looks and smells new and clean and fresh A ++++

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

        Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.
